Gloucestershire v Derbyshire day one

Derbyshire 434-5 (Lamb 186*, Guest 95, Donald 67, Webster 3-82, de Lange 2-80)

v Gloucestershire

Like a 10,000 metre champion lapping the rest of the field, Derbyshire's performance on day one at Bristol outstripped every other day of cricket that they have produced this season. By a country mile.

Interviewed by North Derbyshire Radio's Matt Rhodes this morning, I said that I didn't think we would win a 4-day game this season. Despite a terrific effort today, I still don't think we will win this one, as Sunday looks a fairly unpleasant affair and form up until today has hardly been a strong indicator of success.

Yet we could not have done more to turn things around and at the very least go into the Vitality Blast in better fettle.

We won the toss and decided to bat, but lost three wickets in the first session. To be fair, they at least tried to get us onto the front foot in the game. We were scoring at four runs an over from the outset and once Brooke Guest and Matt Lamb got going, the scoring rate climbed.

I would regard Guest as having the best technique in the side and I always feel greater reassurance when he gets going than anyone else. Both he and Lamb led charmed lives early in their innings, but they got through the morning session and then past tea with some glorious stroke play.

While Guest is by nature more orthodox, Lamb survived drops and began to unfurl a wide range of shots. He is particularly strong through the offside and the power of some of those strokes was quite remarkable. His celebration on reaching a century was touching and good to see, the only shame being that Guest just missed out on his after a partnership of over 227 for the fourth wicket.

It was a career-best for Lamb and his first century for Derbyshire. After a difficult first season with injury, this was clear evidence that he can be a magnificent bat when he gets going.

Lamb was then joined by Donald, who like everyone else led a charmed existence early, but raced to a run a ball fifty. Four boundaries in an over from Dale Singh suggested he might be on for a century himself before the close, but he frustratingly gave it away, chipping a catch to mid-wicket from a leading edge. Like Guest, I suspect he was kicking himself in the pavilion, because a century was there for the taking, having done all the hard work of 'getting in' .

Gloucestershire did themselves no favours with catching of variable quality. There have been times this season when the first time a ball went off the floor from a Derbyshire player it was caught, but today they enjoyed the rub of the green and to give them every credit, they made the most of the opportunity.

I thought Marchant de Lange bowled admirably for the home side, giving everything and on several occasions ending up on his knees with the strain. His final figures bore no relationship to the way in which he went about his work today and it was an excellent effort by the tall South African.

Lamb saw it through to the close, accompanied by a once again circumspect Dal. With 186 to his name, he was seeing it like the proverbial football by that stage and it was a very special innings to watch today.

More of the same tomorrow, would do just dandy.

Well done Derbyshire. Credit where it's due, I have been quick to criticise this year, but that was a very good effort today. From 69-3 to 434-5 was quite a remarkable effort.

  1. Well hallelujah at last a positive days batting as promised by MA for some considerable time. But as always the credit must go to the players on the field. A run rate of four and half an over is extremely impressive rate for Derbyshire side devoid of confidence and belief that they could produce a day like this in the whole first class season. Off to find some watering holes it's hard work watching cricket.

  4. It's been tough at times this season, but always felt we were two wins on the bounce away from a decent position. This may well have been one of them, but as Steve states, the weather could be the winner here.
We are not as bad a side as the early results show and this could be the confidence boost needed. All without a Wayne contribution too. Congrats to Mr Lamb too, fantastic.
    Here's to more positivity tomorrow...hopefully.

  5. What I'm delighted with is that we did without Madsen scoring anything. We've been reliant on him for so long, in glad other players are stepping up. Facet

  6. Wow! Didn't see that coming! Great innings by Guest and Donald and of course Lamb.
A brilliant fluent knock by him. Let's hope he goes onto a double century tomorrow. Rain might eventually be the winner but today's effort must give great confidence to the players- and us long suffering followers!

  7. Guest is some cricketer. I'm never keen on having my keeper bat above six in the longer format but our guy seems to cope with the demands exceptionally well.

  8. That was a fantastic display. So good to see a number of players batting well but Matt Lamb was different class today. He’s always been a prospect and today he came into his own. If he could really establish himself at number 5 we’ve suddenly got a very strong batting line up. Let’s hope he can carry this form forward. All in all, a terrific day for us.

  9. After the loss of early wickets, yet again, l wasn’t expecting that outcome. Would have been very easy to go into survival mode but the positive approach was both welcome and successful. Hats off to Matt Lamb for an excellent undefeated knock after a difficult time with his back issues. Another fine knock too from Brooke Guest but just a shame he didn’t get his deserved century while Donald also missed out on a big score. Nevertheless after a difficult start to the season that was some turnaround and a great boost to the sides confidence.

Hopefully this is a turning point and we can enjoy more days like this one.

  10. This is the kind of batting we have all expected to see from Derbyshire. We were aggressive from the start. After the collapse, following a good partnership between Reece and Lloyd, I thought, here we go, another failure. But Guest and Lamb responded with a stand of over 200, and then Donald joined the party. I hope Lamb can reach 200 tomorrow. He was quite emotional reaching a hundred, I guess because of the back injury he developed last season. He looked a serious batsman today.

  11. Forgot to say, Steve, that I think we can win this one. Declare at just over 500 tomorrow, and then let the bowlers show what they can do, and Gloucestershire follow on.

  12. Well played Matt Lamb. Great knock. Watching Donald is going to fun, he's trying to hit every ball, after his first 5. A draw looks odds on, but we should take healthy bonus points. Kris

  13. Something I've been meaning to ask you for a while Steve. Is Wayne getting more square on as he gets older I'm struggling to remember his batting position from even 5 years ago. A long way to go before he matches Chanderpaul who played French cricket.

    1. I don't think so, Steve. Players can amend their guards, stance and techniques as they go on, but I don't see any major change in Wayne.

  14. Mickey Arthur's record as Derbyshire head coach is truly abysmal not including this game three wins in thirty four matches a coach in any other sport would have been sacked by now

    1. He needs a good white ball summer. It has been the focus of his recruitment and he needs his side to deliver now

  15. If I'm being rather hypo critical Derbyshire took slightly to long 30 overs in scoring that final 92 runs. They clearly wanted to make sure of 500 runs. Hope those overs don't cost them in the end.

  17. If we bomb out on Friday I've decided a polite and respectful letter will be on its way to Mickey. I'm not afraid or in any way intimated by doing this as I've done similar things my whole life. I'm interested in putting many points across, I would not expect a reply but nonetheless he's getting a letter. Im not a passive person never have been and at my age I'm not about to change. If their is an upturn in performance starting on Friday then I will hang fire otherwise I'm getting a few things off my chest. I'm not waiting till the end of the season.Of course he has no need to engage I fully acept that. But supporters have every right to give their opinions in the correct respectful manner. Im waiting for members meetings either.tweedle dum and tweedle dee to that.
