Derbyshire v Sussex Day 2

Derbyshire 246

Sussex 357-5 (Pujara 103*, Coles 72, Alsop 64, Haines 58, Reece 2-32)

Sussex lead by 111 runs

Watching Derbyshire this season, I feel that I am stuck in an endless loop. Whether we bat or field first, we are under the cosh and behind the game from the start. The rest of it is then spent playing catch up and trying to save it.

The weather has helped so far and only the most optimistic could say we have been robbed of victory by the elements. Maybe in that first, washed out game, eh?

It just seems that when we bat we are struggling, with the exception of a couple of players. Then the opposition go in and score pretty much at will. We have three players (Madsen, Donald and Chappell) averaging over 40 with the bat, but only one (Alex Thomson, just) averaging under 50 with the ball, three currently over a hundred. Poor catching hasn't helped, but nor too has an inability to bowl consistent line and length.

Today was a case in point. Tickner, Morley and Dupavillon battled well to take us near to a batting point, but thereafter Sussex looked in very little trouble as they amassed 357-5 by the close.

Chappell's opening spell was poor and I have no idea why you wouldn't give the new ball to Tickner, who has so far done best with it. He was also on a high after a career-best 47, so it made sense for him to open while still loose.

Dupavillon took an early wicket, ran in hard but was milked afterwards like the rest on a chastening debut. Yet he wasn't helped by Lamb putting down a routine catch at first slip, the thirteenth we have dropped in the slip cordon this summer. It is quite ridiculous, the sight of Madsen and Lloyd, who would be there but for hand injuries, at mid off and mid on more than a little frustrating.

Pujara looked in little trouble and I wish we had someone like the Indian for the others to bat around. He is a batter of consummate class and grace and Sussex are lucky to have him.

They look a good team and with the weather forecast largely set fair for the next two days, it will need need a superhuman effort by the batters in the second innings to save the game.

But sadly, that looks like all we're capable of in four-day cricket, making up the numbers. They are trying hard but at this stage I can see nothing other than the wooden spoon this summer.

In closing, I am unsure why Luis Reece seems to be overlooked as a bowler, as his angle alone seems to be worthy of greater opportunity. Nor am I sure what the late in the day spat with umpire Tom Lungley was about. It was unnecessary and certainly untypical of a normally genial bloke, but it was disappointing to watch.

A bit like Derbyshire at present, to be fair.

  1. My first day watching Derbyshire in the flesh this season and it was dispiriting. Your word "milked" was appropriate as they seemed to be almost untroubled as they batted quite serenely.

The wickets were a surprise when they came. Chappell is not a threat at all and it will have been a shock for Dupavillon I guess.

This is a 375-450 wicket and we got 245. No pressure built by the bowlers so we have a huge job to save another game. Looks unlikely to say the least. I truly hope we are a decent one day team otherwise the season will be a write off and the Mickey Arthur project an utter failure.

  2. The optimism that one has at the beginning of the season doesn’t last one if you are a Derbyshire supporter. Once again we have witnessed an underwhelming start to the season with few highlights other than one or two individual performances. Collectively the side looks poor in every department, the batting looks fragile while the bowling unit, once again, looks unlikely to take twenty wickets. Add to that the fielding with so many dropped catches gives us little chance to get back into games.

While it has been said that we have a better chance in the one day stuff it’s bitterly disappointing to see us struggling to compete in the longer format.

Hope I’m proved wrong but the wooden spoon looks to be heading our way.

  3. I understand the despondency around at the moment. Even the usually upbeat and ever optimistic peakfan seems at a loss.
For most of us reading Steve's blog I suspect the 4 day game is the one that counts, so this season is hurting so far. In my opinion, if we lose this one (I'd give a 20% chance we'll save it), we will have to win the next two. If we do, such is the topsy-turvy nature of the championship, we would suddenly be looking okay.
I honestly think MA's position will rightly be in jeopardy if we don't. The mad and sad thing is, Dave Houghton was probably doing a better job than this when he got the chop!

  4. We have lost Critchley, Masood and du Plooy from the batting line up and I'm afraid it shows. Listening to Madsen's interview this week, it gave vibes that this could be his last contract. Quite where we go after that, I'm not sure. It used to be a case of both sides getting huge scores at Derby and currently, it's just the opposition. Kris

I have followed the blog for quite a few years, it’s compelling reading, instant updates and an opinion that’s ways measured and fair. I’m a Lancashire member but I do have a soft spot for Derbyshire, I’m concerned at the lack of players coming through the academy though, just look at the current team. Lloyd (Glamorgan), Reece and Guest (Lancashire), Madsen (South African), Lamb (Warwickshire), Donald (Glamorgan/Hampshire), Dal is an academy graduate, Chappell (Leicestershire), Tickner (overseas), Morley (loan from Lancashire) and Dupavillon (overseas). A look at some of the winter recruits include Samit Patel from Nottinghamshire and Pat Brown from Worcestershire. Alex Thomson started at Warwickshire, there are the likes of Aitchison and Conners, Came, Whiteley and Wagstaff. But I would seriously question the role that the academy is playing in producing young players to represent Derbyshire rather than the club always having to go into the recruitment market every winter, obviously at a cost, it just cannot continue. But I’ll continue to follow the club fortunes as it is my nearest ground that isn’t Yorkshire.

    2. Reckon Reece and Guest would waltz right on in to your batting line up this season Carlos!

  6. I still have my Junior Member's ticket from 1969 and was lucky to attend a Championship match at the end of August against Kent at Derby where Ward, Rhodes, Eyre and Buxton bowled Kent out for 75 in their first innings. How the mighty have fallen! To currently bowl out a side under 500 would be a result! Yet again our only option is to pray for rain and/or bat for a draw. As has been said before taking those 20 wickets seem an illusion at the moment, especially as Sussex will only need to bat once. The crushing of any hope is hard to take. Welcome to the 2024 wooden spoon. A response from the coach would be welcome.

    2. Completely agree with the lack of young cricketers coming through the academy. However, if we are looking to bring players through from the local leagues then that in itself is a major problem. The standards in the DCCL have been declining year on year. The good young players are simply not there.

  7. Good point raised by Carlos , in fact Dal was released from Notts .Came ( ex Hants ) and we currently don’t have a group of local young players seemingly able to be elevated to the First Team . Moore ,Potts coming back from injury ,Conners and Wagstaff not selected . I’m off to watch the 2nd team at Repton next week ,so will be interesting to watch the game and gauge progress .

As predicted by myself yesterday it was just so obvious that Sussex would make batting look relatively easy on this pitch. It's been one hell of a miserable start to this season with no unit functioning at all. I honestly can't wait for the T20 already for some entertainment, but I'm not holding my breath for that
Here's one for you Steve, do you think the players are behind Mickey, do they get on. I just find it so difficult to fathom why we have this respected coach who has managed top international sides, is failing so miserably at Derbyshire?

  9. Was there any need to rest Thomson for this game? I presume he's not injured. We haven't a game for 2 weeks and he's a reliable performer with bat and ball. I understand Lancs will want Morley to get game time, but we need to look after ourselves first. Kris

  10. In all forms these are the records of Dave Houghton and Mickey Arthur. Dave 22 wins 44 defeats 12 draws.Mickey 22 wins 22 draws 24 defeats.

    1. Assume that doesn't include Dave Houghton s first spell as coach because that was a total disaster

  11. You'll be lucky. It was impossible to get a response last season and as Peakfan acknowledges this season he cannot deny that this is not 'his' team. I don't believe the shorter form of the game will bring anything other than a continuation of the poor standard that we are witnessing in the 4-day game. We are not good enough and Arthur must be held accountable asa al Managers are. Disappointing times.

  12. It seems me that more often than not we only perform when the pressure is off. As soon as it counts we don't turn up.Also apart from Wayne nobody puts back to back seasons together. Sammy 50 wickets in the 2022 CC.Where is he now a top youngster would have kicked on.Second season and Harry Came has been found out.Zack Chappell only improved today after I told him Arsenal were winning 2 - 0.His first three overs were terrible as he went for 27.Its early days but is Dal going to flop this season ?Will it be 12 wickets for Alex and a case of over and out.? These are, familiar scenarios of recent years for a number of current and past players

  13. Mickey arrived as the messiah, who was going to lead us to the promised land. However, in year three of his discipleship teaching, we look no different to the days of Dave Houghton and the days before him. We don't score enough runs and we can't bowl teams out. That's the problem in a nutshell. I've no idea what the solution is. We struggled to post a decent score against Sussex (only thanks to Tickner and Morley we got near 250). Sussex made batting look pretty easy. It's puzzling.

  14. If bowlers lack penetration, they should at least aim for line and length. It's impossible for a captain to set a field when there's so much dross being bowled. The pre-lunch 12 overs were demoralizing. Can Tony Palladino drop by some day soon?

  15. I didn't see any of the play yesterday, but I guess that if Tickner and Morley were able to put on a few, the signs weren't good.

It's hard to see many positives or to expect any upturn in our performance in red ball cricket. It would take some effort from here to draw this one.

Again, the signings suggested as much, and if the white ball doesn't show a vast improvement then I'm not sure where we go from here.

  16. Good point, Old Supporter. We have never found a proper replacement for Palladino who knew how to consistently bowl line and length over several seasons for us. Such a fundamental approach seems beyond our bowlers these days.

  17. If Sussex bat the way they did yesterday and get a lead of 250 plus, then we are going to struggle to get even a draw out of this game, unless Mr Weather, arguably our best player, so far, does some magic. On the other hand, if we could pick up the remaining wickets quickly this morning, keeping the lead under 150, then we might have a chance. But to stand any chance of winning we would need a couple of our batsmen to play a big innings, and our bowlers to be much more penetrating than they have been up to know. I'd like to think this is a possibility, but there is a predictability about our play: we collapse when we bat, and we leak runs when we bowl.

75-3 in out 2nd innings as I write this, heading for a crushing defeat. Mickey Arthur better come out after this and say it's not good enough. The weather has saved us from losing another two matches so far, so the division 2 table isn't telling the whole truth at present. For me Mickey has the first few t20 games to get this season going, if not he has to go
