Derbyshire v Glamorgan day 2

Fine centuries by Martin Guptill and Wayne Madsen today put Derbyshire in complete control of their game against Glamorgan at the County Ground. Guptill eventually perished for 132 but the skipper stayed to the close, ending on an unbeaten 122.

A lead of 99 with two days left is useful and with good batting to come Derbyshire will hope to push that lead to around 200 tomorrow and allow plenty of time to bowl out the visitors a second time.

Although Dan Redfern and Ross Whiteley went cheaply later in the day, David Wainwright kept Madsen company to the close and offered promise of more to come in the morning.

With Yorkshire currently struggling against Hampshire, this has been an excellent two days for us, though eventual success will depend on decent fortune from the weather.

A good first session tomorrow, followed by getting the visitors back in during the afternoon, will be the tactics I'm sure, though Derbyshire will have to work for their second innings wickets without the injured Mark Footitt.

Still, its all very encouraging and long may it continue...

  1. Yes, an excellent two days cricket from derbyshire. It would be a real shame if the weather robbed us of the opportunity to push for a win. Depending on the forecast I don't know whether an earlier declaration might be sensible; perhaps after biffing a quick 50 or so in the first hour. In any event, it's great to see us playing so well and long may it continue.

  2. Guptill looks a class act doesn't he? My mate Borrington fails to deliver again, 15 from 52 balls. Surely time is up now with Hughes surely pressing for a start. Just got up and the weather looks grim here in Chesterfield. Hope the sun peeks through in a bit.

  3. I enjoyed yesterday very much. Guptill and Madsen were excellent and fully deserved their rewards. It,s some time since i,ve seen Madsen bat with such authority. He looked like he meant business. They both had the odd piece of luck, but few reach three figures without it.

With the weather looking like it usually does, i don,t think we can afford to bat for too long. We have to bowl them out and the sooner we get them in,the better. I certainly wouldn,t prolong our innings beyond an hour. Being a bowler light,it will make it harder than it might otherwise have been. Good luck boys.

  4. Slightly off topic, but did anyone listen to the ECB Cricket podcast on Wednesday. They described Yorkshire as top of division 2. Rather than spend an extra half a second describing them as "joint top", they instead decided to forget all about Derbyshire. Still, it'll be a lot harder for them to do that now.
