Worcestershire v. Derbyshire day 4

Worcestershire, 237 and 243-6

Derbyshire 578-5

Match drawn

In the end, Derbyshire could not force the win that would have perhaps redeemed in part their poor four day form this summer.

But then, it was always likely to be so.

There wasn't a great deal wrong with a wicket on which our batting side had managed 578-5 only the day before. When time was taken out of the second innings by rain and bad light, the task got even harder, especially when one considers that this was some way removed from a first choice attack.

No overseas 'attack leader' (no change there) no Chappell, no Conners. No Aitchison, out for the second innings and who knows for how long, a loan seam bowler on a tour of the counties, a bowler just back from a side strain, a second/third choice spinner and a young tyro in his sixth first-class match. The portents were not good.

Yet again it highlighted that there is much to do over the winter.

I am not suggesting that Derbyshire make wholesale changes, because the money is simply not there for that. But they do need to look around the country and the world to find the same small group of players but improve the quality.

It was perhaps inevitable that Sam Conners, after a summer last year when he played almost every game, might find his body rebelling this time around. Zak Chappell has a history of injury, around being a very good bowler, while the least said about Suranga Lakmal's stint the better. The seam attack on paper looked good, but sadly it has largely remained on paper only.

On a wicket such as the one at Worcester, you either need a quality seamer or spinner. The reality is that we had neither. Good cricketers, because I have said before, you have to be to play at this level. But not special cricketers, the ones who rise like cream to the top, to force a win in such situations.

We won't finish bottom of the table, but only because Yorkshire look set to be docked a lot of points for the historic issues at that club.

But there has to be change at the end of the season. If we cannot find better players somewhere, who regard Derbyshire as 'the county of choice' then we need to be prepared for more of these days. When we play ourselves into a winning position, but fail to press home the advantage because we don't have that X factor that enables the win.

I think the batting is broadly OK, but we do need an opener. We also need to quickly sort the du Plooy situation, because we will know the money we have to play with and whether he needs to be replaced. I also hope to see Matt Lamb back in form and in the team, because players coming to the end of their contracts might look at a player such as he and wonder if Derbyshire really is the right destination to continue their career. Perhaps he will benefit if du Plooy leaves, but they are huge shoes to fill.

It should not all be gloom and doom. Maybe we could have declared earlier, but an extra half an hour with that attack would not have made a difference. Yet we did well, with those limited resources, for 3 days of this match, batting with style, substance and class.

That they fell short in the end should not be the end of the world.

But it should highlight what is required for the new beginnings.

  1. A very fair assessment, Peakfany. There are two questions to which I would love to know the true answers:

    1. The state of the club's financial standing. Laudably, a profit - albeit usually modest - has been acheived for a lengthy sequence of seasons now. Exactly how much leeway does this give the Board, and how urgent do they perceive the need for player investment to be?

    2. Did Mickey Arthur know the full answer to that when he took this job on and made clear the intention of winning silverware, becoming the county of choice etc within 3 years or so?

If the answer to 2 is yes, as I would hope and expect, has MA overestimated the resources he inherited?

I am not optimistic about du Plooy staying unless there is a much greater investment in the player budget, which may or may not be possible. If it is not, then it is difficult to see a way forward, as there is far more needed over and above the captain's contract renewal.

    1. Good questions to which only Mickey Arthur and the club board have the answers.

But realistically the club has to back the head of cricket and give him the best chance possible of bringing some glory days to the county

  2. Although we couldn't winkle them out, and are still at the foot of the table, our excellent batting is a positive we can take away from this game.

Leus du Plooy's stock will be even higher now. I hope we can manage to hold on to him, because he seems to have gone up another gear this season.

Tom Wood hit 167 for the seconds against Yorkshire. But I still have my doubts whether he can replicate that sort of innings in the CC. So far, his 19 innings in the CC have only yielded 202 runs.

We've been unlucky having so many injuries to our stable of bowlers. There's not much that can be done about that. At least we'll have Big George and Zaman in the attack tomorrow.

  3. Disappointing not to have won after dominating much of the game. However, in many respects it was inevitable with a threadbare attack after Aitchison left the field. And, of course, the weather didn’t help matters either on the last day. Nevertheless we can surely take credit from a much improved performance. The batting, apart from the top order, yet again, is flourishing with Leus du Plooy in sparkling form. I thought the captaincy might impact on his batting but that doesn’t seem to be the case. There is little more to be said about Wayne Madsen’s contribution that hasn’t already been printed here, he’s just a maestro with bat in hand. Other than that the most pleasing aspect of the game was the return of Anuj Dal who contributes so much to the team with his all round game. Five wicket haul, a big hundred and a spectacular catch - welcome back!

  4. Could you expand on your comments regarding Leus De Plooy? Is he going at the end of the season? After he got to his double hundred on Tuesday there appeared to be some bitter comments from one of the commentators on YouTube saying that Du Plooy should be on to his agent regarding signing for a better club for more money

    1. My understanding is that Leus as Club Captain is on a very good salary. But the reality is that a good salary at Derbyshire will be considerably less than the equivalent at a Test ground county.

We can do our best, but the money will only go so far and we still have to put out a full squad, not just one or two high profile players.

I suspect that he will leave, but would be delighted to be proven wrong

  5. I would have played Zaman Khan rather than a loan player. I feel that his youthful enthusiasm could have turned the result into a win.

    1. Presumably he was ok'd to play against Worcs by PCB obviously MA was frightened he would get injured and be unavailable for Friday if the lad has any ambition to play test cricket he got to start playing FC cricket

    2. He hasn't played. F/C cricket and may have no ambitions to do so. He can become very wealthy merely playing T20 around the globe

  6. Agree with all you say PF thoough I think you are being rather hard on Dal. After all he took 5 wickets in Worcs first innings in addition of course to scoring an undefeated 141.

    1. Not sure I said anything about him, other than he was just returned from a side strain, which is true?

    2. I was referring to the bit where you said we need a quality seamer, PF.

    3. Ok, but I meant as opposed to an all rounder. Nuj is terrific and I really like him, but with four seamers struggling now, the specialist positions are bare.

Taking players comparable to an overseas seamer, Conners, Chappell and Aitchison from any side would stretch them. Loan signings don't very often cut it (Brookes this season excepted)

  7. Can’t disagree with anything you say Peakfan. Unfortunately with a small county such as ourselves your overseas players have to be top notch and you have to say this year in Championship cricket ours have disappointing to put it mildly. Presumably a good portion of budget is taken by Lakmal and Haider and barring the century at Chesterfield we have got nothing back from them realistically. I don’t blame MA for that as we needed an experienced opening bowler to back up Connors, Aitchesen and Potts so Lakmal made sense and obviously Haider was a punt on clearly a talented player but obviously not suited by an opening slot as of yet. These two clearly have to be replaced by match winners that produce more value for money.
Again Du Plooy was given the captaincy as a sweetener to try and make him stay and hopefully that may give us another year at least out of him but I suspect that won’t happen although we live in hope!
I don’t think we could have performed much better in the Worcester game and good to see Dal back which helps the balance of the team so nothing but praise for how they played this week.

  8. Derbyshire weren't the only county unable to force a win. At Leicester, the home side's 9th wicket held out for 20 overs against Durham, while Sussex's last pair were undefeated after 21 overs against Glamorgan. Perhaps it was easy-paced wickets everywhere. And after a month of T20, no-one is used to having to winkle out batsmen only intent on defence.
