Derbyshire v. Yorkshire T20

Derbyshire 212-4 (du Plooy 66*, Ali 59, Guest 39*)

Yorkshire 68 all out (Chappell 3-16, Scrimshaw 2-8, McKiernan 2-10, Thomson 2-22, Khan 1-12)

Derbyshire won by 144 runs

I have been racking my brains to think of a more complete 20 over performance than the one delivered by Derbyshire today.

We didn't just beat a Yorkshire side coming into the game on a lengthy winning run, we destroyed them. Annihilated them. Spifflicated them. It was a very special performance that showed the talent in this side when the mood takes them.

It didn't look that way early. Harry Came played some nice shots, but he, Reece and Madsen were all gone inside the first seven overs, the latter overestimating his powers of acceleration and underestimating the speed of Thompson, who to be fair had spent most of the game to that point limping.

Slowly but surely du Plooy and Haider Ali rebuilt the innings. The latter looks a different player since he moved down the order and will have enjoyed the Chesterfield festival week. Some of his shots today were magnificent, the highlight being a cut behind square for six. He is a delightfully wristy player and it is just a shame that we experimented with him as an opener. We wouldn't have done that with Mohammad Azharuddin and we shouldn't have with Haider Ali.

He was just starting to break loose when he was brilliantly caught on the boundary edge by Jafer Chohan, just short of a second successive six. That should have served as an aide memoire for Shan Masood that the latter was in the team, as he was strangely not asked to bowl his leg spin today. When your number eleven plays as a non-batting specialist it suggested that t'rudder had gone.

Yet the advent of Guest to join du Plooy simply signalled an onslaught as we have never seen. 93, NINETY-THREE came from the last five and a half overs as both batters found and cleared the boundary with astonishing regularity. Why Ben Mike, who had already seen his three overs go for 43 runs, was asked to bowl the final over is beyond me, but bowling first to the Derbyshire skipper and then to Guest he saw it go 6-6-6-1-6-6. The game was still slightly in favour of Yorkshire with 3/4 of the Derbyshire innings gone, yet by the end of it the referee really needed to stop the fight.

Guest is a very fine player and adds speedy running to power, while du Plooy in this vein is international class. As he did at Birmingham, he simply took the bowling apart and they had no answer to him. I don't think many would, because when he plays in front of the wicket he is a serious player.

On a ground where 160-170  is a par score, the visitors needed a steady start, but inside 19 balls they were 7-4 and the game was gone. Alex Thomson, in his first T20 appearance of the summer, removed Lyth and Malan, while Chappell at the other end took 3-16 to further confirm his credentials as a very good and oft-underrated bowler in this format.

There was no way back. Masood is a fine player, but not as destructive as some. When he spooned an easy catch to Reece at midwicket, it was fairly academic. The Derbyshire fielders had plenty of opportunity to work on their high catching and they were all taken with aplomb. The rockets of Scrimshaw and Khan were in reserve and they were far too good for the remaining Yorkshire batters.

It was Derbyshire's biggest T20 win, Yorkshire's heaviest defeat, as well as their lowest score in the format. It was, in short, carnage.

It is a result that will live long in the memory of Derbyshire supporters. More crucially, it puts them right back in the mix for qualification and the middle order now looks a very serious unit. The odds are still against them and they need to win them all from here, but that one gladdened the heart.

What do you reckon, a Christmas gift set with a DVD of the game, and a bottle of eau de Yorkshire tears?

Joking apart, that was a very special performance, on one of the loveliest of grounds and in front of a capacity crowd.

Michael Palin, Emily Brontë, Jeremy Clarkson, Judi Dench, Sean Bean...your boys took one hell of a beating today...

My old Dad, missing for his first Father's Day, would have loved that one.

  1. Not sure many diehard Derbyshire supporters saw that coming. However, just maybe the side have turned the corner. They played well for much of the Championship match against Yorkshire, apart from the car crash of a first innings and then could easily have beaten Durham with a little more game management. Today, for a change, the whole team seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Haider Ali and Leus du Plooy carried on where they left off in the previous encounter and Brooke Guest added to his burgeoning reputation at the end. As for the bowling well it was game over after four/five overs. Messrs Chappel, Scrimshaw and Khan are a handful and Thomson and McKiernan did an admirable job on a small ground for spinners. And the fielders took their catches.

Hopefully, this last week will have restored confidence in the side and they can continue to turn the corner after an underwhelming start to the season.

  2. My lad just set off to head back to Scotland after a weekend here. Just what I needed to read to cheer me up again Steve.

    'Carnage'.

Thanks lads. What a performance! Might read the Yorkshire forum later.

  3. Having watched many an 'overseas' over the years I am taken by the positive body language [and not least the prowess] of both Haider and Zaman in supporting wholeheartedly the Derbyshire cause . As we know success prompts the wealthier vultures of the County circuit to circle but as somewhat fringe players to the Pakistan national squad then even now their potential retention should perhaps be a priority? Our coach's' insights are demonstrably paying dividends ! A final and particular word for the efforts of Harry Came. Not the eye catching numbers but giving a much needed impetus to our power play

    1. Totally agree, Alison. Haider looks very happy now, great in the field, a dynamo with the bat . Zaman bowls every ball as if it is his last and at 21 his skills are terrific. I would secure their services for next year and enjoy watching their development

Find a replacement for Lakmal, but retain those two and accept Haider is a very good middle order bat.

And yes, Harry allows a powerhouse middle orde

  5. Phenomenal! As you say PF, Yorkshire weren't just beaten they were annihilated. With Chesterfield packed with spectators and sixes flying in all directions when Derbyshire batted, it was a great occasion and a pleasure to be part of it. The batting of Haider Ali, Leus du Plooy and Brooke Guest was nothing short of awesome and then when the Yorkies batted, our bowling was excellent and catching sensational. In all my years of watching Derbyshire this was the most comprehensive victory I've ever witnessed. We looked like world beaters.

  6. The Yorkshire puddings tasted extra nice today!

  7. I think that was similar to us at Somerset last season. We turned up off the back off a really good run and thought the job would do itself. Yorkshire seemed to do the same today. Kris

  8. There is an excellent report on today's game on the Cricinfo site. I suggest all Derbyshire supporters should read it.

Oh boy, isn't it nice to stuff those Yorkies and stuff them we did. The baffling Derbyshire turned up again today, we're either brilliant or awful and today we were the former. A complete performance with bat and ball, Ali, Du Plooy, and Guest brilliant with the bat and all the bowlers bowling brilliantly.
Yorkshire capitulated spectacularly and I think we've won the last six t20 games at Chesterfield against them. Well played lads, more of the same please

  10. I told you last season Ben Mike was not a great signing PF, when you advocated lots of counties being interested in him! Hes dire, occasional scores a quick 20, but they signed him for political reasons, which imo is all wrong, it should be merit, when Leics at very best is his level.

Anyway good to see you hammer the Yorkies! Critch finally doing the business for us, whisper it but a better option than Moeen in many's opinion.

Not commented this season so far but avidly read keep up the fine bog work and so very sorry to read of some of the personal losses and health troubles.

    Go well.

    1. Ben Mike is a fine cricketer. He had a bad day, it can happen in T20 especially. Ask McKiernan.

Is this the same Matt Critchley you were saying was struggling and wasn't good enough for the 1st division not so long ago. Now it appears he's good enough for England! 🤷‍♂️

    2. I still like Mike as a player, tbh. He is a young lad still but I have seen him do well. A lot better bowlers than him have gone round the park and it happens to them all, especially on a small ground with zero margin for error.

He will come again, but yesterday was our day

    3. @Jasper, Critchley was struggling in div 1 last season, records speak for themselves. This season he's come good and been a leading player in a side struggling for runs, i would like to see him bowl more. I didn't actually say he's good enough for England, just that he's a better option than Mooen, which isn't saying much (not played a 4 day game in well over a year, struggled previously vs. Aus etc). We should have moved earth for Rashid to come back, if we were unprepared to blood someone else or back Roots spin.

Re. Mike, not quite sure how he can be described as a fine player - he has gone round the park in pretty much every game this season and is 2nd from bottom of the averages and very bottom of the economy rates again this season i believe. Not that young anymore 24/5 - again his record backs up my assertion, but will have to agree to disagree despite all evidence to the contrary!

Anyway hopefully we see you in the QF's at the expense of a TMG county.

  11. I'm sure that there have been some seasons in the past where we struggled to score 5 sixes in a season, let alone in one over.......

    1. Don,if my old memory serves me correctly, in the interests of bright cricket ,one newspaper used to keep a list of sixes scored, I think by mid aug in one year Derby had 2and both were by Bob Taylor

    3. Yes one of the Sunday papers used to do this. I recall Chris Wilkins being near the top one year. Roy Marshall of Hants was always in the mix, too!

    4. We are a similar age lol I think it was NOTW ,Chris certainly improved our stats lol

  12. Great performance, and I agree that when he is like that LDP is international class. Strangely I think our poor start may have meant he played himself in, which benefited him. Even Chris Gayle said he always took a few balls to play himself in, even in this format!

I'd have Tom Wood up top for Luis Reece though, who looks so pedestrian compared to last year, and after the shocker against Yorkshire away, won't bowl. Even his 50 against Durham was well behind the rate, and put us under pressure. He'll come back - we need to keep him fresh to the County Championship openers slot anyway!

  13. When we play like this we can beat anyone. It was a magnificent performance, with both bat and ball. I mean, 31 off the last over - with 5 sixes! Incredible. And knocking over Yorkshire for 68 was truly astonishing.

For once, it all clicked. Came scored rapidly, Ali produced the goods again, and du Plooy and Guest were sensational together.

We've known Leus du Plooy has the ability to be destructive, but we haven't seen much of it. After smashing 66 against Warwickshire and smashing 66 yesterday, he now seems to have found a different mindset.

The bowling unit was superb. Chappell now has 19 wickets in the competition, with Khan and Scrimshaw not that far behind, and Thomson and McKiernan both looked class.

We have to play with the same sort of confidence and aggression against Northants and Lancs this week. If we do, we can win both games, and our lame start to the campaign will seem a distant memory.

    1. I think that the loss to Northamptonshire and dropping the point at Durham will come back to bite us. We have no margin for error and have to beat Lancashire.

They have again confirmed the benchmark high standard to which they are capable of playing. The challenge now is to maintain that standard, not drop to one that is considerably lower

  14. Oh! That was good, real good!

When Yorkshire supporters are praying for the rain to arrive and moaning, life is sweet, real sweet!

It's going to be difficult to nudge into that top four and it seems unlikely, but the confidence within the squad must be sky high after that demolition. Thanks guys for a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon at God's own cricket ground.

  15. Only disappointment for me yesterday was hearing 3 Derbyshire 'supporters' booing Shan Masood and shouting Judas. Really? They seemed to think it was funny. Alcohol I presume.

    1. I don't get that either. Masood was a fine player for Derbyshire, but was entitled to consider his options.
Drink has a great deal to answer for. Same as the lad who went on at the end to shake hands with the Derbyshire players.
You don't do that. The playing surface is for players, as the name suggests. No one else, except by invitation

At lots of Chesterfield one day games I have attended over the years I have seen Chris Adams score 140+ when he was caught by Devon Malcolm on the Pavilion roof viewing area, Martin Guptil score a century and all the recent Yorkshire games including Matt Critchley’s winning last over assault but these have all been surpassed by yesterday’s game
A magnificent and historic win, pity you could not be there Peakfan

  18. My Saturday night comment regarding a “lack of ruthlessness in the batting “ seems to have been taken on board at long last. Total ruthlessness in all departments was on display yesterday, if that becomes the norm success will surely follow. Ruthlessness within the laws of the game is a trait shared by all successful professional sports teams.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Totally agree with Dave B about how ruthless we were with the bat. All too often in games, we haven't done this. Now, hopefully, we will try to make batting this way the norm. Leus du Plooy showed just how destructive he can be yesterday and in the game against Warwickshire. We need to see him doing this on a regular basis in the T20. Ali has proved how he can take apart the bowling, as have Madsen and Reece, and on, occasions, Came. And now Brook Guest has joined the Big Hitters' Club. I don't want to get carried away after yesterday, but we have a top six who, on the day, can cause carnage.
