Derbyshire v Yorkshire day 4

  1. In the end, despite Watt snaring Malan first ball, we couldn't get the wickets we needed. With cool as a cucumber Masood batting, it was always going to be difficult.

Another defeat, but at least there are some positives to take from the game. Ali and du Plooy both batted superbly and long, and Watt turned in a fantastic performance.

It seems to me that we don't have the right blend in the team yet. We've obviously been missing Dal, but even so there have been too many poor individual batting performances in games. In this game, only two of our top six fired. We need to do much better and be more consistent.

We're now bottom of division two, something I hadn't expected at the start of the season.

So, back to the T20. If we can beat both Durham and Yorkshire, we'll put ourselves in a very good position in the group.

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed the match despite the final outcome. Just hope the players can take some positives from the excellent fight back. Obviously need to sort out the top of the batting order (easier said than done). And find an opening partnership bowling wise that can make some early inroads. Presumably with Lakmal out under concussion protocol and Conners sidelight we don’t have many options.

Overall, l think our fate was sealed by lunchtime on the first day, sadly. However, credit to the players for the great fight back that saw us win many of the sessions after lunch on day one. That wonderful partnership between du Plooy and Ali was outstanding and that along with Mark Watt’s bowling were the stand out contributions.

A lot to sort out but Derbyshire will hopefully take heart from that game.

    1. As I said last night CB, I didn't see the last session today as I had a six hour drive with my wife and two dogs to my Mum. Subsequently, her needs have taken priority...

And is Lakmal our worst ever overseas player, one for discussion I feel?

    1. Why discuss this? I'd rather discuss who is Derbyshire's least-supportive supporter. A short discussion.

There’s some incredible competition for that ‘honour’ so I’ll say no for now.

    3. I have too much respect for people good enough to play for our county, however they fared, to do that. People will have their opinions but it is not fair to put that in print

  5. Notwithstanding our fightback on days 2 and 3 of this game, we lost, and are now bottom of Division 2. Perhaps our coach MA might be available for comment for supporters, especially concerning his plans for the rest of the season. What team materialises at our next Championship game at Worcester on 25th June will be interesting. Perhaps how to improve on our miserable 7 batting points might be a start.

  6. Not firing as a team with a recurring theme . Apart from one Championship game the bowling attack have gone for 350+ and that was a “6 for” by a loan signing !! Lakmal and Aitchison both seriously out of form .7 batting points show the frailty of the batting particularly in first innings . We seem to play in clusters where only 3-6 players do well , won’t win many sessions of cricket and therefore games like that , especially in 4 day cricket.. I’d shake hands on it with Lakmal and see if Zaman fancies a full season with Ali . It’s now evolving into a 2024 planning phase tbh .

  7. Apart from the first ball gift wicket and a missed stumping in Thomson's first over Derbyshire never looked like finishing Yorkshire off

  8. Some thoughts on Shan Masood. I saw him bat last season and he looked a class apart from any of the other batsmen playing. He seemed to have so much time to play the ball, as all the best batsmen seem to have. Without him in the Yorkshire team, we would have won this game. It was a shock last season when the Yorkies snatched him from us. I know that you said previously, PF, that he was offered all that we could afford to keep him as a Derbyshire player, but I have to wonder if the most strenuous efforts were in fact made. Was he offered the captaincy with us? Was the prospect of ditching Lakmal after an underwhelming and injury-prone season considered? This would have saved us some cash. And I don't recall Members being approached for their views on this subject and whether some sort of crowd funding arrangement could have been set up. Just some thoughts.....

    1. Last year DCCC made a profit of £170 k with the club proudly announcing they are debt free and reminding us how many consecutive years they have been in the black. Whilst this may sound good in theory ( and it’s certainly better than huge losses ) I think we need to remember what the primary aim of the club is ? Hopefully to win cricket matches leading to trophies - something we have never been particularly strong at!! So in answer to your point chapel guy I don’t think we did in fact go all the way with the offer to Masood as we could have paid him say £50k more and still made a substantial profit. It seems we are very good off the field but not good on the field. I know what I would prefer. Paul

Well Mickey Arthur didn't seem at all concerned about another defeat picking out the two positives from the game. I suggest you look at the table Mickey it makes for grim reading in what was supposed to be a promising campaign.
It's been nothing of the sort at present, it's been a shambles in big parts with so much to work on. I think another awful season and membership will be at rock bottom and serious question marks over Derbyshire's future

    1. Of course he'll be concerned but he won't, nor should he, criticise his players in public. And it's hardly a shambles, disappointing yes.

  10. Whilst I am as disappointed as anyone in the way the season has panned out we should be looking for the positives, outside of the Durham game rarely have we been totally outplayed, what we have has is one dreadful session per game which has put us on the back foot and made winning impossible. If we hadn't had that terrible morning against Worcester when 10 & 11 put all those runs on and we gave 80? extras, morning session this week at Chesterfield. In both those games you could argue we outplayed the opposition for much of the game and without those sessions both teams would have been needing significantly more, and too many runs for them to win but giving us a high probability of a win. What we need for next season is a stable opener, and Ali remain in the middle order to build on his experience in English conditions.
Lets stop all this doom & gloom and look forward to a better second half to the season (dont get like all those Yorkshire supporters at Chesterfield who never stopped moaning about their team and poor players they had signed etc. As good as Shan Masood is remember that we lost him for half the season, and he is doing the same for Yorkshire, surely we want someone for the whole season, and do we expect the board to compete when someone is reputedly offered between two and three time more money?
Surely if MA came out and openly criticised his players we would, and more so the players would be disappointed in him, I have confidence in MA he has a class track record, who would we want to replace him with?? I don't think his Pakistani role is a diversion, he is very visible both around the ground during a match and out with the players between sessions.
