Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire day 4

Nottinghamshire 618-8

Derbyshire 318 and 249-4 (Reece 86, Came 70)

With solid, dogged batting, Derbyshire ensured that they emerged from the game with draw points today.

It was largely due to an opening stand of 161 between Harry Came and Luis Reece, the former making his highest first-class score, the latter his highest of the season. It was the first century opening stand of the season and should ensure both men retain their places at the top of the order.

Both batted well, ignoring appeals along the way that became increasingly prolonged and petulant. I would argue that some of the appeals today and the reaction to them bordered on dissent and Noftinghamshire aren't a side I enjoy watching. Good, yes but not one that I could get behind.

Tom Moores had a difficult second innings and conceded 27 byes, although one or two deliveries from Pattinson in particular were pretty horrible. Although Guest and du Plooy failed today, Madsen and Cartwright saw it through to the last twenty overs and handshakes all round.

It is a result that sees Derbyshire fourth in the table ahead of Monday's trip to the scenic splendours of Worcester.

We would have taken that before the season, after what happened last year.

  1. Reece and Came were superb in the way they dug in, providing the platform for us to get a draw. I was particularly delighted that Came posted a career best 70, batting for over four hours.

I must admit I was surprised that Notts shook hands so early, as they had just started to chip away at the Derbyshire batting.

    An excellent result.

    1. I thought Harry looked a good young player. He knows he can score at this level, now he needs to go on to the next and post tons. Brooke Guest has done that, so too Dal

  2. Must be added that losing the morning session to rain also worked in our favour. A good draw for us.

  3. Cricinfo says Slater had wild celebrations after taking Came's wicket. Presumably the former Derbyshire man's first Championship wicket, but come on Ben, this didn't mean your adopted county were going to win!

    1. It was described as an Imran Tahir like celebration on commentary. They said he has taken 3 FC wickets now and 2 have been against Derbyshire

    2. He took a wicket against us at Trent Bridge and also got Max Holden so that’s 3 for the season for Slater

  4. Well done Derbyshire, strong resolve shown and also stood up well to the constant appealing and noise in the field . Didn’t have the best of conditions but a session lost to rain helped today . As for Slater , Imran Tahoe style celebration , not really necessary tbh . Anyway move on to Worcester …

  5. Reece and Came batted impressively against some fine swing bowling. Harry Came will have gained so much experience from facing the "aggressive" (not my description) James Pattinson. Since the late 1950s I've enjoyed the local rivalry but this Notts team lacks class in its onfield demeanour.

    1. Well put, Old Supporter. 'Classless' and 'boorish' come to my mind. And while Ben Slater is a nice lad, his celebration today, notwithstanding his status as a non- bowler, was embarrassing, unnecessary and totally at odds with the match situation

  6. A dreadful advert for championship cricket this game. What was the point attending after that first day? That's why T20 is where it's at for me even though the traditionalists will strongly disagree, mainly exciting to watch and over within 3 hours. Sorry, but this game was as dull as they come

  7. I understand your sentiments, Chesterfield Blue, and as much as I enjoy T20, I still find CC games like this one fascinating, despite passages of play when little seems to be happening. It's more like poetry than a novel.

  8. Not a particuarly enjoyable game. Notts are loud on and off the field. The oohs and aahs for even forward defensives get very tiresome after a while and their lbw shouts were averaging 2 an over, it felt like. They are a better side than that. Came did well, as did Guest, but not one to live long in the memory. Kris

  9. Notts will say that the weather frustrated them but they only have themselves to blame. If their skipper had looked at the weather forecast and declared sooner we might have had much more difficulty in saving the game.

    1. I'm not sure I agree with that. 4 draws out of 4 at Derby. Notts basically had 2 full days bowling at us and could only take 14 wickets. These pitches are not good for the game in my opinion. The Chesterfield game was far more exciting.

    2. I agree. That was a very good cricket wicket where batters and bowlers alike could do well.

If Paterson and Pattinson can only take 14 wickets, as international bowlers, how can lesser talents?

  10. The pitches are a problem this season but also the standard of the balls are a factor. If wickets are not taken with the new ball after 30/40 overs they go dead.

It will be interesting to see if England can continue with "bazball" when a different batch of balls are produced.

  11. Nice to see that Notts enormous score has paled into insignificance compared with Glamorgan's! Northeast 410 not out!
