Nottinghamshire 618-8
Derbyshire 318 (Guest 109, Madsen 74, Fletcher 3-44, Mullaney 3-51)
and 79-0 (Came 38*, Reece 30*)
Derbyshire trail by 221 runs
The forecast for Derby suggests considerable time will be taken from the game on the final day. Although that will allow the main visiting bowlers to stay fresh, I would hope that ten wickets should be able to bat out the day.
The openers battled doggedly through 38 overs in the second innings, after our first dwindled to something akin to very little once Wayne Madsen was dismissed. 194-2 became 318 all out as the ball started to swing for Mullaney and Fletcher. Conditions were quite different to those on day one, but we didn't handle them especially well.
The follow on was inevitable given the weather forecast and the size of the lead, but the fight was commendable second time around. South African Paterson rather overdid the short ball but the hostility was taken from the attack and the day, ended with spin at both ends. Came showed good judgement of the balls to leave and play throughout. If he can build on his start tomorrow and post a big score, it will do his confidence the world of good. He can play, without doubt, but needs the weight of runs to confirm it in the scorebook.
Meanwhile Reece subjugated his natural style for one of attrition. He has been short of runs but again, a big one tomorrow will set him up for the rest of the summer.
The first innings highlight was a fourth century of the summer for Brooke Guest, who continues to look a special cricketer. Only Bill Storer over a century ago has scored four centuries for the county in a summer as wicket-keeper and Brooke has time to go out on his own at the head of that list.
He is only 200 away from a thousand runs for the season, but Wayne Madsen needs just 51 more to follow Shan Masood to that landmark.
Dig in lads. No fours before lunch and precious few afterwards, as Cardus once attributed to Emmott Robinson..
That'll do nicely
Another interesting article from the day was that the County Ground will be developed. I wonder what they are planning to do. Any suggestions?

Keep up the great work on the blog.
Gareth
I do have quite well developed thoughts for a new ground should I win a decent amount on Euromillions but I'll keep those quiet for now (unless David Clowes is reading and fancies something to occupy his time).
DeleteIn terms of the County Ground I would invite East Midlands Demolition in to do what they do best to their stand. I would replace this with something similar to the Sharks stand at Hove which would bend round to cover two thirds of the footprint of the temporary stand givng a capacity of around 3,000 seats. The structure as with the one in Hove would have room for commercial units underneath which could be configured to be available to the general public when the ground is not in use. If PPS has a Greggs then the County Ground can have a Birds plus a Derby Brewing Company Pub and several more units earning rental income for the club.
The footprint from the new stand to the Gateway would be for a new Members Pavilion. This would be a modern version of the Colin Cowdrey Stand at Canterbury with a decent amount of seating at Ground and Second Floor level and a large indoor viewing area on the 1st floor.
Between the new stand and the media centre I would build a grass bank to replace the one lost when the new media centre landed. The marquee could be elevated a little at one end of this giving more room for benches in front of it (another nod to Hove).
I'll stop there as I suspect that I may be close to spending the budget.

Sounds great, Paul. I agree the Demolition Stand has served its time and purpose, the latter mainly being somewhere dry and a shelter from the cold. But it is not an enhancement to the ground, aesthetically..

DeleteApparently it is the company doing the work on new toilets at the ground...
DeleteBrooke Guest wanted the number three spot, and he's been outstanding. He batted for over six hours for his 109. This is his fourth century this season in the CC. Let's not forget he's keeping wicket as well. Reece and Came did a fantastic job in digging in. Let's hope both can get a big score tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteNot related to this match but it will be great to see Tom Wood back battling for a place. Welcome back Tom 👍
ReplyDeleteIt was very enjoyable to see Harry and Luis graft away like that. They pretty much didn't play any shots with a risk element involved. Notts looked fed up by close of play. Pattinson, who looked like he received a warning from the umpires, reduced to singing on his way back to his mark.Meanwhile Patterson tried Larwoods leg theory with 5 men from square to long leg.
ReplyDeleteEarlier Brooke played superbly. We have definitely had the worst of conditions in this match. Mullaney, in particular, was a handful swinging prodigiously both ways.
