Glamorgan v Derbyshire day 3

Glamorgan 518

Derbyshire 177 and 413-6 (Hughes 122, Madsen 90, Godleman 66 not)

Derbyshire lead by 72 runs

There was a much better effort by Derbyshire in the second innings today, but one that will almost certainly, barring a miracle of biblical proportions tomorrow, result in another four-day defeat.

While there's Billy there is hope, but we have a long way to get to a total that would worry the home side too much on a wicket that has been largely blameless throughout. That, of course, makes our first innings collapse all the more lamentable.

There was another fine century from Chesney Hughes that took him within 200 runs of a thousand in the season for the first time, while Wayne Madsen moved to within 140 of that target before being dismissed on 90. While they were together, hopes of a draw were briefly entertained, but after the partnership ended the procession began.

Billy Godleman had recovered from yesterday's indisposition to bat solidly through to the close, but the departure of Shiv Thakor before the close left Derbyshire with a mountain to climb on the last day.

Disappointingly, both Hamish Rutherford and Neil Broom failed to put on a score of any size and their continued poor returns must be a concern to both. It certainly is for supporters, as we have two players in who the club invested faith and no little money averaging only 27 runs each with the bat.It isn't enough, something that they will be aware of and they need to take us through to to RLODC knock outs now to be deemed anything approximating a success.

Were a four-day side being picked tomorrow night, one of them would almost certainly miss out in favour of Ben Slater. As it stands, the Chesterfield batsman should be given serious consideration for the fifty-over competition, simply based on his stunning form in that format of late.

More from me tomorrow, but I could quite possibly write the report tonight...

  1. This seasons great friend the weather may save us again. Good stuff today, lots of pressure, why o why can't we do this more often. The 2 kiwis aren't just one of the boys anymore, a different kind of pressure, neither of them seem to relish it.

We cant do it because we cant play cricket under pressure.

Why do yiunthink time and time agian we seem to play well when its all in vain. Top sportsmen relish the challenge, rill up,their sleeves and go toe to toe with the opposition from the off, not when its a lost cause. today was all about saving face there was no real pressure as after the disgraceful 1st innings the game is effectively over.

Winners play their best cricket under pressure

    Thats why we are losers

Sorry just how I see it and Im sick of seeing it at Derbyshire

  3. I personally think comes the time to give Slater a go. I do think Broom and Rutherford will do job in short format in 50 overs. If you look at shorter game these two will contriubute huge amount. Are the days getting player like Guptil who do it in all format consitent. How many players preform consitant in all forms? We need ask ourself before we appoint a perment coach was is vision of the club. At moment looking at squad I think top one day team. I feel we been competitive and showing signs competing consistenly. In 4 days format what watched sunday was way below average apart from will Davis efforts. As bowler believe you should judge on 2nd season when batsmen faced them before. I believe we need build Broom confidence up this player who average nearly 40. We need to give him fair chance but at same time needs to be dropped if he under preforming and allow Slater to have his chance. Most of us got Rid Chesney Hughes but this season he stepped up level. Thakor had disappointing 1st season but this year has come on. Then if you look at players like Footit the best was not seen straight away. I believe if we want to be a really good one day team the kwiw impirtant but Rutherford will struggle to preform in 4 day from evidence last 2 season thats why needs to share his role next year with bowler in 4 day.
