Congratulations to Burgoyne and Knight

Burgoyne and Knight may currently sound more like solicitors or estate agents but given time the two names could possibly become synonymous with Derbyshire cricket. At 17, for them both to be selected for their country's Under-19 side is an impressive achievement, albeit one that is richly deserved.

Knight is already seen as a player with a real talent, having bowled in several T20 fixtures without looking at all fazed by the razamatazz and the big names up against him. He has bowled straight and with tight lines, effectively telling batsmen to have a go but to bear in mind that if they miss they are in trouble. It is early days for him, but the potential is obvious.

Burgoyne is less well known but has turned in a string of fine displays for both Denby and the Derbyshire Academy, as well as making his mark on the Second Eleven. He is a powerful hitter of a ball and an off spinner who apparently gives the ball a tweak. Whether he follows Knight into the first eleven this year is debatable, but at his current rate of progress he could emerge in the middle order next year.

I'm sure we will all watch their performances with interest and wish them luck. It augurs well for their futures - and that of the county.

  1. Burgoyne plays for Denby, not Spondon. Both he and Knight (Swarkestone) are plying their club cricket in division one of the county league.

  3. Seriously? Apologies if that was the case. What about the comments made about Ashley Giles?

  4. There's a difference. Those about Giles were in reference to acknowledged fact. Warwickshire are poaching, or trying to poach, young players from elsewhere. This is in the public domain. Giles has a role which is compromised by a dual mandate, which is well known. You cannot make accusations of the nature you did when its not in the public domain and is someone up to mischief.

  5. Sorry mate, not allowing that either. You send me your name, address and telephone number and I will, but not otherwise.
This is not here to allow squabbles to be aired. That should be done through proper channels IF there is an issue.

  6. That's your decision peakfan, after all it is your blog - and an excellent one at that. I enjoy reading and will continue to do so.

I wasn't trying to make a squabble or have a complaint that something improper has happened. Just making the point that there might be a conflict of interest here with club and county not too dissimilar to the county and country one that has been rightly highlight with Giles, albeit in a different context.

I'll leave the last comment on what I perhaps should have started with and say congratulations to Knight and Burgoyne on their selection for England. I hope they do well if selected and make theirs club and county proud.
