Played one, won one...

Old ‘Nelson’ would have been pleased with Surrey’s all out total of 111 in the pre-season friendly at the County Ground today in a 40-over match.

With four wickets for Greg Smith and three for the Jones boy, there were tidy performances from all the Derbyshire attack, including Chesney Hughes, whose left arm spin was neglected last year when we had Robin Peterson.

Tony Palladino turned in a tight spell, as did Jake Needham, while Garry Park came on briefly and took a quick wicket, as he does regularly.

Then, as the old Steve Earle song goes, the rain came down, giving our ‘Buxton Water’ branded pitch covers an early airing. I’m assuming that this isn’t the most cunning of ploys by the marketing team.

“We’re that good, when the rain falls in Derby it comes down as mineral water.”

I’ve got this mental image of Nathan Fearn and Tom Holdcroft sitting at the end of the hoses running from the covers, crates of empty bottles by their side being filled up and sold in the bar at a hefty price, with another, longer hose going to the back of the new marquee. Buxton water on tap? We've got it covered...

Evian we wouldn’t do that….

Sorry.

Coming soon – County Ground mulch for your borders. The highest quality grass cuttings as trodden on by the players of the God’s own County XI. If we flog the water and mulch in good quantities we’ll be signing Ponting and Tendulkar for next year’s T20….

Anyway, we won today's game by six wickets with Chesney top scoring. I'll happily take that against any side and the team can go into the real stuff in good heart.

Finally tonight, Luke Sutton’s Twitter feed looks like it could be worth a look from time to time this summer. Check out his comment on Tom Groenewald’s ‘radical new haircut’ ahead of tomorrow’s media day at the ground. See:

Back soon!

  1. I went today against Surrey and there were plenty of positives;
Steffan Jones looks to have plenty still to offer. Smith bowled well. Chesney bowled OK although I was surprised to see him bowl before Needham. Palladino looked tidy and we fielded well with Sutton taking plenty of catches. A pity Whiteley didn't get a bat or a bowl.
They had a good young fast bowler called Dunne.
Negatives on the day were the relationship between our press officer (if we have one) and Radio Derby. On their 8-30am Sports Desk today there was no mention of the game at all and on their 4-30 and 5-30pm Sports Descks this evening they didn't even give the result out. Plenty of sign of activity from the offices today but no one obviously had the e-mail address for Radio Derby!

  3. No photograhs of today's game on the Official Website. Any reason for this?

  4. Chris Grant was at the game looking like a club committee man should look in his official club tie and blazer. He chatted to supporters and seems to have a real passion for the club. We could not have got a better man to replace Don Amott at the helm. Good luck Chris. Hopefully we can get John Morris on a new contract then we can all just concentrate on the cricket!

  5. Being at the game today I detect a good team spirit and some real competition for places. We may not have the stars that we had last season but I am confident that all of the squad can step up to the plate this year and defy the bookies who have already written us off as usual.

  6. I have got to say that if we are paying a guy £3,500 to take pictures then he should be taking them! Surrey sent a guy up to cover the game and he did a video yet we couldn't even get someone to e-mail Radio Derby to tell them we were playing!

  7. I have got to agree with the last man. I put Radio Derby this morning for a report on the Surrey game and they never mentioned it. This is an area that Chris Grant must give some attention. We are a professional club yet we always fall down on keeping our supporters updated. Maybee give one of the many office staff the job of Club Publicity Officer as part of their job?

  8. Yes, how long does it take to e-mail the score to the local radio? I live in north Derbyshire and we never get a mention on our local radio station called Peak FM. Maybee someone from the club could copy them in on the same e-mail as they should be sending to Radio Derby.

  9. Yes, can we get the publicity problem on the agenda at Mr. Griffin's next secret meeting or have these meetings stopped now Chris Grant is the top dog?

  10. Not about Derbyshire but I feel very sorry that Ireland and the non test playing teams have been kicked out of the next world cup. Surely if they are looking to expand the world game then they should have at least 2 non test playing nations at the World Cup.
