Yorkshire won by nine wickets
The Welshmen put on 114 in the first ten overs, but only 65 came from the final ten, as the powerful middle order tried to outmuscle one another, going for boundaries, rather than playing their natural games. Yorkshire also bowled better in the second half of the innings, which was hugely disappointing after the pyrotechnics of Donald, in particular.
He scored the fastest 50 by a Derbyshire player and it was magnificent to watch, but thereafter the collective batting was a major disappointment on a very good pitch.
With Root, Malan and Masood in the opposition lineup, we needed a good score, but the execution of shots was very average after the opening pair had been dismissed.
Nor were the bowling or fielding anywhere near previous standards, as Yorkshire chased it down with ease. It was always likely to be so, with three international players in the top four and perhaps the dice was cast when Yorkshire won the toss, but after the excitement of Derby on Friday night, this was poor.
Lyth was especially destructive and by the time that he was well caught by Fletcher at long off, the game had long gone. While the home side's spinners slowed the Derbyshire charge, Thomson and Patel went at ten an over as Malan showed his international class. Dupavillon was the best of the bowlers but they were firmly put in their place today.
They can do better than this and next weekend, against Northamptonshire and Birmingham, they need to do so.
Well talk about reverting to type, no excuse for not making 210/ 215. It's the same old inconsistency failings. I'll go as far as to say if we finish next weekend at 2 and 5 then we're OUT.
ReplyDeleteWell there are batterings and there are batterings and I think that falls in to that category. We fell 40 to 50 runs short after that blistering start by Lloyd and Donald, the latter impressing greatly, but when both openers went it was pretty dismal stuff, you knew then 179 wasn't going to be enough when you saw the quality of the Yorkshire batting line up.
ReplyDeleteAnd to be fair Yorkshire's opening pair never looked troubled all too easy for them, smacking us around at will. Dupavillon the only bowler who showed anything, and why wasn't Whiteley given any overs after Friday nights performance, baffling!. Totally outclassed today and we just can't compete with the squads of Yorkshire and Lancashire, they're a class apart
Puts Friday into a bit of perspective- enjoyable as it was to hammer No££$, but if you look at their forums they have practically resorted to pitchforks and flaming torches-, their worst white ball side ever if you believe them and calling for Moores to go.

Well I did say the Yorkies would give a sterner test than a awful Notts team and so it proved. To only get 179 after being 114/0 at half way was frankly pathetic. I’m struggling to understand the thought process of our middle order today. It was never gonna be enough without a monumental bowling effort on a beautiful batting surface. We were never really on it but the game was not lost with the ball but with the bat. One step forward and two back . We get another go at Northants on Friday . Let’s hope the Notts game was not just a false dawn because Northants at home is a game we must target as a win if we have any aspirations of getting out the group and is looking like a must win I’d say.

ReplyDeleteIt's taken a few years for the penny to drop, but I reckon the reason I'm not a millionaire by now is down to backing Derbyshire.
ReplyDeleteLooked at the Yorkshire bowling line up, considered our wonderful win against Notts, confidence high and all that, and for the first ten overs sat smug as can be. "Hah", I said to the wife, "See, I'm not mad putting a few quid on the lads". Then looked at the cricinfo commentary slowly sinking into the sofa!
In fairness, if you'd have offered 179 at the start to us, I'd have said yes. Lyth has been in wonderful form for sometime now, then Malan and Root. They would be tough against an established international attack.
Just have to put this one down to experience methinks. We're not out of this by any means yet.
It wasn't a bad score, just not good enough against that batting lineup and after that start. Logically, Yorkshire, Brum and Lancs should be three of the four to qualify. That leaves another place for everyone to fight for. The matches against 'lesser' teams are ones we have to win. Any others are a bonus
DeleteWith hindsight, bringing Thomson in for Wagstaff was a mistake, I didn't understand that selection just as I didn't understand Whiteley not getting any overs. Not saying it would've made any significant difference but why change a winning side?

DeleteThat was frustrating to watch after such a fantastic opening stand by Donald and Lloyd. The power play and opening partnership has been the weak link up until now but roles were reversed and the middle order misfired. Not sure what went wrong but we didn’t manage the second half of the innings very well. To be fair Yorkshire bowled better later on taking the pace off the ball and Root was especially effective.
ReplyDeleteLikewise the bowling has been the stronger suit but today, apart from Dupavillon, we were poor in line and length. Similarly the fielding was nothing like Fridays effort.
Just hope we can regroup and bounce back against Northants.

As a very general rule I admit, but it far to often seems when playing for Derbyshire players just can't stay in the moment, by that I mean precisely what's needed at a particular time. Its about being aware at all times and I mean ALL TIMES where the match situation is. Sounds so simple so basic, also it appears to me that real confidence and belief is but a fleeting friend to the vast majority who pull on a Derbyshire shirt.That ridiculous second 10 over failure had absolutely nothing to do with MA that's ingrained in Derbyshires culture. ReplyDeleteCounty sides would have made 220 after a dream start like that. I dont know the answer I simply cant fathom it out. Its 1 game yes, but it's the same game in different circumstances played over and over again. Are we out NO, will we qualify to me that's 50/50 at best. Because when pressure is on and it will be 2 out of 3 days next weekend, they more than likely won't respond in more than just one of the games.That would leave us 3 and 4 at the shortish break. History says Donald can't do it again not for another 10 games anyway. Lloyd a t20 batting aver age of 23 as opposed to 30 or more by top players such as Wayne. Talking of which I have no choice but to mention this remarkable Derbyshire player yet again words fail me when it comes Wayne thats 32 t20 fifties and two hundreds in career people need to realise that puts him up their with the very best to have played t20 cricket.And yet because he plays for Derbyshire, in the past he has barely got a a game inthe 100 a complete joke.He going to finish something like 6th in the all time t20 rankings of the blast ater what will be 22 years if he as expected calls it day next year. What a man foremost and thenwhat a player. I'm maybe will surprise some but I personally all round rate him higher than Kim Barnett even through Kim's stats are higher. Wayne is No 1 for me .

DeleteSuch a pity to see us squandering the start given by Donald and Lloyd. A magnigicent innings by Donald. We can but hope he will repeat this and get some support from thd middle order who were , quite frankly, feeble in the extreme.
ReplyDeleteI have to say the result is pretty much as described above, but as one or what felt like a limited Derbyshire contingent at Headingley today my main take away is how much a thoroughly decent human being Cam Fletcher is. Me and the Mrs bumped into him and his young family on the way back from getting some food after the game, No ego whatsoever and saw our DCCC hoodie/cap and made a beeline to come and have a chat with us, had all the time in the world and seemed genuinely appreciative of the support and opportunity. Certainly the kind of person that I want representing our great club.

ReplyDeleteYes, the toss is often decisive there and when we didn't make 220, as seemed likely, I feared the worst. You had to make them overreach and they could take it steady
DeleteAway from the cricket, and I know I'm a bit grumpy, but the umpires got many 'wide' calls wrong, often in favour of the home side. On blatant wide when we were batting didn't need a trip to Specsavers (other opticians are available). Also the live stream seem to be infatuated with the crowd and the Viking, even when the cricket was going on. Rant over.
ReplyDeleteI agree. There were way too many crowd shots and I lost count of how many times we went on to the mascot signing autographs. Another example of an international ground not providing as good a coverage as some of the smaller clubs
DeleteWe all know how inconsistent Derbyshire have been over the years, and also how they have succumbed to collapses. And it happened today.
ReplyDeleteBut after such a flying start, following on from thrashing Notts, I thought, "This is it! We really have a team that can go far in the T20. I was speechless when experienced players like Madsen, Patel and Whiteley failed to capitalise on what Lloyd and Donald did, and got out cheaply.
We scored just three boundaries in the last ten overs. That's abysmal.
I've said it before on the blog: we seem to have a collective lack of confidence, if that's what you call it. I can't really explain why experienced batsmen who have been given a magnificent start (nearly 12 runs an over off the first ten) capitulate instead of building on that. We should have scored between 210 - 230.
Credit to Yorkshire. They batted well, and never looked in trouble.
Hurts me to say it but I think Yorkshire will win this tournament. Missing several players yesterday and that top four of Lyth, Malan, Root, and Masood should plunder runs for fun. Them or Surrey anyway
ReplyDeleteI don't think so. Somerset are very good at this format and if Lancashire progress, they will have Salt, Buttler and Livingstone to come in. Yorkshire will probably lose Root and I don't think that attack will worry too many teams.
DeleteIt was certainly disappointing. Strangely, the middle order in a first innings after such a good start are under pressure to keep up the rate - almost as if they are chasing 220 -40 to win the game - and it all unravelled. With hindsight, Guest could have gone in at 3 as the anchor, aiming for say 50 off 35-40, and Madsen, Whitely et al launching from the other end. Might have worked better than a frenetic slogfest. It will be interesting to see how the situation is managed next time. Better still win the toss and bowl. We are a chasing side.

ReplyDeleteGiven what Mickey has said about building the kind of team that could all the way in the T20, the batting collapse yesterday beggars belief. Yes, some players would go cheaply after Lloyd and Donald returned to the pavilion with their job done, But I would have put money on at least one player coming in after them and continuing the great work they did and getting us past 200. But, incredibly, each player failed, either because they lost their wicket or because they couldn't find the boundary. As Derbyshire supporters, we are used to collapses and failures. But this one was truly epic.
