Leicestershire 176-6 (Handscomb 75* Ahmed 36* Patel 2-21)
Derbyshire 178-6 (Patel 64, Madsen 43, Guest 20*)
Derbyshire won by four wickets
The victory at Edgbaston today was exciting, in a game that ebbed and flowed quite beautifully throughout. Peter Handscomb showed himself a very fine cricketer for Leicestershire, but Derbyshire came through a troublesome position with sterling efforts from skipper Samit Patel and the evergreen Wayne Madsen. At the death, when cool heads were required, we had one of the coolest in Brooke Guest, who orchestrated the final chase beautifully.
Patel's timing and placement was excellent, while Madsen lent good and sensible support. Reece and Came struggled early, but Lloyd got the ball of the game from Ben Mike and could do nothing about it.
I thought we bowled and fielded well again today. Catches were taken, the field intelligently set and the bowling was good, especially on a pitch where one boundary was significantly shorter than the other.
Chappell was excellent until his last over took some stick, but this happens against good players. Brown was also very good and I maintain, as I did pre-season, that we have traded up in swapping him for George Scrimshaw. He is brilliant in the field, besides what he offers with the ball and it was nice to hear the commentary team noticing his return to form.
Special mention for Mitch Wagstaff too today. He came into the side and did a fabulous job with his leg spin. Bowling straight through, he was loudly encouraged after every ball by Guest, while the occasional word and pat on the back from his captain was good to see.
Samit turned the clock back. His bowling was niggardly, which we have come to expect, but his batting rekindled memories of his very high quality prime. He had a little luck and should have been held twice, once from a routine catch that Ben Cox probably drops once in every five thousand attempts. But his batting and a century partnership with Wayne Madsen turned the game on its head. 64 off 32 balls gave us the sort of power we have often lacked in the past as five times he cleared the ropes.
I have seen Derbyshire capitulate plenty of times when faced with the equation of the final two overs. But an exquisite six over extra cover by Guest steadied the nerves and a less well-timed one from the fine ball of the nineteenth started a party, at least in this house
How can we improve? I could almost copy and paste from last night, because 17 from the first three overs and 39 from the Powerplay will not be good enough towards the business end of the competition. The return of Donald will undoubtedly help, but we cannot end the fielding restrictions playing catch up all the time.
Again Daryl du Pavillon was missing, though it is hard to see where he fits in on merit. Were I on the club board, I would be a little concerned that someone we had brought from South Africa, paid flights, accommodation, maybe a car and a decent salary to couldn't get into a first choice side. A mistake has been made. I won't accept 'rotation' as an excuse, because teams bring over two overseas players to enhance their squad. We are only playing one.
But tonight, with a smile on my face, I will focus on the positives. This was a good Derbyshire display and you could tell what it meant to them. Lancashire await, but with their England men missing, they are beatable.
The little tweak to the side today brought dividends and Wagstaff was definitely an enhancement, both to the bowling and the fielding, while he is a handy lad to be batting at nine. If Donald can return after this weekend there is power to add.
Let's see what happens at Old Trafford tomorrow.
But that was a good effort today. Samit's Soldiers are on the march!
"Marvellous effort, that", as Richie Benaud used to say. As you say, Peakfan, a great game to watch with a narrative rare in t20 slogs. I've been particularly impressed with our ground fielding in both games - and that's without the brilliant Nuj! Bring on Lancs - hopefully all are still fit. Well done today. Quality display.
ReplyDeletePJS - Yes, well done lads, got the right side of a match that certainly did ebb and flow.
ReplyDeleteI am glad the leadership listened to me about giving Wagstaff a game, but glad they didn't listen to me about moving Patel down the order LOL.
You have now completely convinced me about the opening pair not being right for the powerplay. Until Donald returns perhaps, Lloyd & Reece?
A couple of observations; Reece went from bowling the last over to not bowling at all! Whitetely is yet to make double figures, but who else do we have, Lamb?, if form deserts him.
Anyway, our first victory of any kind this season...more of the same please.
Great victory and Samits winning mentality already paying off.I would play Brooke at the top end he's wasted at 6 and he's been in good form all season. We can't complain though we are off and running and really competing which is great to see.Topspinner.
ReplyDeleteI think Brooke and Donald would be a terrific opening pair. I have seen some write he isn't a T20 bat, which is bonkers, really. He scores at 134, Came 133 and Reece 130. In comparison, Madsen is 138, Whiteley 136..
DeleteI fancy us to win when we chase but am concerned with us defending a total as unsure as to our best death bowlers.
ReplyDeleteLike others have said very impressed with Samit's interview at the end with his winning mentality.
Lets hope its the first win of many. How good is it to write this in a positive mood.
Some interesting scores in Derbyshire Premier League today
Sawley 14 all out at Rolleston
Denby 23 all out (2 wickets for Sam Conners) at Ocbrook & Borrowash
Good to write indeed, David.
DeleteMaybe we should be having a look at Chemar Holder, the West Indian opening with Sam. 6-15 today and cutting a swathe through the league. Looks a good bowler to me and well rated in the Caribbean
If we're into commentator speak how about " oh do stop it aggers." Right let's get back to the Cricket, magnificent effort from Derbyshire. Samit told us all he still had something offer and so he has. This was a game many a Derbyshire team has lost in the past but when it mattered they produced. In my opinion its absolutely vital we finish no worse than 2 and 2 after the Notts game.Anything other that will make it extremely difficult to progress.
DeleteSteve jr
Dunno Steve, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Eight wins is normally enough to go through to the quarterfinal, so you can perhaps ''afford' to lose six. But winning is a good habit and one at Old Trafford tomorrow puts us in good fettle for next weekend
DeleteThing is Steve Ive got scars probably just like your goodself no doubt as we're both over a half century of the odd high but more often disappointment. My main point is staying in touch with the pack because if we had to win 5 on the bounce I'm afraid I wouldn't back us to that. It is worth mentioning we only won 6 games last season before getting thumped by Worcestershire. But let's keep it simple by not having any 3 game losing runs. I'm worried by the short turnaround tomorrow the fact that other teams may at some point have the same issue is of no help to us. It is an extremely big ask to be physically and mentally ready for a ridiculously stupid 12 noon start. I'm worried that they'll be caught physically and emotionally flat.Ive seen it and experienced it so many times in various sports.
ReplyDeleteSteve jr.
Why on earth are they playing so early? Surely a 2/2.30 start is the best time to get people into the ground.
DeleteExcellent victory with a fantastic all round performance from Samit Patel. The bowlers did well to keep Leicestershire to total we could chase. Brown looks an excellent recruit and Chappell performed well again despite taking some stick in his final over. Particularly pleased that Mitch Wagstaff was selected and he bowled extremely well, his inclusion also benefits the fielding that has been excellent in both matches and strengthens the batting.
ReplyDeleteIf the top order can be sorted quickly with the return of Donald then the early signs look good. While Brooke Guest could easily do a job higher up the order in the T20 he can also do a valuable job in managing the latter part of the innings. Difficult choices!
We should take heart from these first two matches and go to Old Trafford in good spirit.

I think you are being a little harsh, regarding du pavillon. Amir left us with 2 weeks notice, hence why we don't have a death bowler. Full, fast and straight is the order of the day late on, so maybe he still has a role to play. Kris
ReplyDeleteA solid and uplifting performance. Patel possibly felt he had a point to prove, and he did it with both bat and ball. Madsen provided excellent support, with Guest illustrating, once again, what a good batsman he is.
ReplyDeleteBrown and Chappell both bowled well, despite leaking too many runs at the end of the Leicestershire innings, and I was delighted Wagstaff bowled so well on his T20 debut.
A question Peakfan. I think we were playing what should have been a home fixture at Edgbaston. Why do we do that? Does our
ReplyDeleteshare of the gate receipts exceed what we would earn if we played the game in Derby? The game was televised. Did Derbyshire get the money from the tv company for that?
To answer the question, the game probably brings in twice the receipts of a game at Derby with none of the overheads. So it is cost effective for the club and they will also take a share, I am sure, of the TV revenue. The maximum crowd at Derby is 4999
DeleteJust got home @11-30pm … despite a poor powerplay and not so good death bowling we Won a game of cricket which will do the squad a power of good … still room for improvement and the day got even better when Notts hit the buffers !!
ReplyDeleteI feel stupid and a bit embarrassed for posting a comment when we were at the start of our innings and soon three wickets down, I commented we're a joke. I apologise for that knee jerk reaction as we were in safe hands with Wayne and Samit at the crease. What a stand that was and it saw us through to a fantastic victory, Guest chipping in with that final flourish.
ReplyDeleteThe opening pair of Reece and Came just isn't working though and needs to be changed for the next game, far too slow going isn't it?
How about this one Steve, Samit's Soldiers meet Patels Plunderers, or Sergeant Samit and the falcons flying high. Or Sammy the Saint wears the halo once again. Or Samit the Sorcerer weaves his magic. Sorry Steve I think I'd better stop because I've got at least another 10 in me. It's your fault because it's you that got me started. As anyone got the nerve to come up with something better ? bet nobody has. Oh just one more the Samit Singers hit all the right notes. That's it I'm definitely done, desperate for just one more ? oh alright then if you insist, Patels Pullverisers. Right that's it I promise. (I seriously throught about not putting my name to this)

I'd consider swapping DD for Blair Tickner who has gone for 38 and 36 in the two games without taking a wicket. His career record in T20s is better (going on the numbers) - lower average and better economy rate. We certainly can't and shouldn't play both which of course make his signing all the more baffling. I was really pleased with how yesterday went; our outfielding was as good as it gets and contrasted hugely with Leicestershire's. In fact it was the difference as there were probably 8-10 runs gained from ground fielding errors, not to mention the drops. I did enjoy the wicket keeper's especially. Perhaps have control of the ball before trying to throw it up to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking that myself Tim, but having spoken to Blair a number of times I'm making the Classic mistake of letting my heart rule my head. He's such a nice amiable bloke who's doing so well just to be on the field that I'm not thinking straight. But from a cold cricketing point of view I would play Du pavilion today. I'm hoping Blair wont connect me with this. Its clear I couldn't be a coach I'm not ruthless enough. It's amazing just talking to a player on the boundary rope how much you can take to them. So I'm definitely torn, glad it's not my problem.
ReplyDeleteSteve jr.
CB so that's what you meant, it all makes sense now I throught your comment was after the game. I didn't pay any attention to the time you posted it. If you feel the need to do it again that's fine by me, I'll just take note of the time. I'll let you into a secret I get so excited myself that I often feel like commenting during the game but somehow I manage to resist.
ReplyDeleteSteve jr
Yeah Steve, it might even have been when Reece went and I think we'd scored about 15 off the first three overs, I felt like yelling it's a 20/20 game guys not a four day one, lol. The opening pair just doesn't do it for me, maybe give Lamb a game over came?
DeleteI think Wagstaff or Lloyd should open, until Donald is fit. If we really wanted to be funky, we could send in Chappell to open. Either way, we need to improve the power play. Far too many dot balls. Kris
ReplyDeleteI know I'm making a lot of comments Steve, but if I can just mention the 12 noon start. The people who have scheduled this have never played sport. Because believe it or not the difference on the bodies recovery between 12 noon and 3pm is huge trust me on this. Ask a premier league footballer does he prefer to play at 12 noon or 3pm I guarantee you 100% will say 3pm. Their is for a reason the body has a natural way of waking up I've risen at 2am to run Marathons aboard in a dozen different Countries it's tough believe you me. If we lose today nobody can say for sure it was the 12 noon start but it isn't right that everyone plays later.
ReplyDeleteThese people don't understand sport or the recovery process. Utterly ridiculous.
Hopefully we'll win the game anyway, but I stand by my opinion based on actual experience in three different sports.
Steve jr.
I think when you finish around 6pm one day, then are playing at midday the next, it is crazy. Especially when organised by the organisation responsible for player welfare and fitness.
Delete18 hours recovery between games isn't on.
It looks as though the game is the first part of a double-header with a Thunder fixture following.
ReplyDeleteAgree, an absolutely ridiculous time for a T20 game, I've never known one start at midday ever
ReplyDeletePresumably the visitors have no say in this? Seem to remember we were the first part of a similar 2xheader last year at OT and had a 2.00 start time midweek, which is equally daft.
ReplyDeletePlayer welfare doesn’t appear to be high on the list of priorities when it comes to scheduling these matches. Perhaps we should be grateful that we weren’t playing at Hove or Canterbury the day before. It’s just another dreadful example of those in charge of the game.

First of all well done Lancashire, you deserved to win. But boy I'm not a happy man as I saw this coming a mile off and stated so last night and this morning on these very pages. Firstly Lancashire didn't play yesterday a crucial advantage wirh such a short turnaround. Secondly their is no other 12 noon start in the entire competition. Thirdly as a County we're already up against it historically and in many other ways. So why us ? Ryan Ducket will be getting an email at 8am tomorrow morning to make sure we don't get dumped on again. I'm absolutely livid over this, sour loser, ? possible yes but what's the point of competive sport if you arnt. It's about winning otherwise don't bother playing. We ve had a raw deal and the result went the way I feared it would. I'm asking for a level playing field not for any favours. If this defeat costs us when no else is being asked to play at 12 noon then I'm storming the gates of somewhere. Im just not sure where. I so saw this result coming I would have put money on it if I were a betting man.
ReplyDeleteSteve jr
Reply to the above comment: the reason we lost was nothing to do with anything you said. We were beaten by a team that executed their skills better than us. That's it.
