Sussex v Derbyshire day 1

I must confess to not seeing any of today's play, as I was travelling to see Mum and spent the day doing stuff for her.

It sounded like a pretty awful morning session, especially after winning the toss and choosing to bowl.

A decent come back in the afternoon in the evening, but with Fynn Hudson-Prentice still at the crease, Sussex could do more damage tomorrow morning.

Please let me know what you thought of the day in the usual manner. Hopefully tomorrow might be less manic and I might be able to watch some of it myself.

Fingers crossed our batters make a decent fist of things.

Always assuming that the weather allows them to do so...

In view of prior games at Hove this season, I find the decision to bowl first having won the toss, at best dubious and at worst absolutely stupid. Without mentioning individuals, the entire performance over the day was pretty woeful including other decisions that were made on field and confirms fully the position we are in. The so-called 'project' that the Management have referred to, is in my view fully broken and in fact the club has performed worse on many occasions this season than before any project was even mentioned in previous seasons. Where we go from here, I'm not sure and I do agree that we need to try and be positive BUT things are not good. The performances generally have been poor to this point, often embarrassing and second-rate, certainly in red ball. I would very much like to read the views of others.

It struck me as a bold move at 10.45am to see us choosing to bowl first with the sun out and the three main bowlers all with no sort of form behind them with the red ball. Whilst we will undoubtedly miss LDP as a batsman, sorry batter, I don't think he's a good 4 day skipper.

  4. You were lucky. I saw the majority of the morning session, and it was one of the worst displays of bowling I have seen for a long while. Electing to bowl first seemed odd at the time, and quite what the rationale for doing so was, I'm not sure.

The fact we had 5 seamers, but the spinner was on well before lunch speaks volumes. Haines and Clark batted well, but my word it wasn't difficult. Performances like that just cannot be tolerated, and I have to say if Dave Houghton was still in charge, the knives would be out and well sharpened...

    1. Fair comment Jasper and they will be again, likely, if next summer doesn't show improvement. The only rationale for inserting them must be that with rain around and only a contrived finish likely, we better fancy our chances of a last afternoon run chase, rather than bowling them out

    2. The thing is though Steve, the forecast isn't and wasn't that bad for the south coast, and it shouldn't be a reason for inserting them, and with regard to chasing, we're not England!!

They were 150-0 at lunch! and although there is a short boundary, Messrs. Gladwin, Jackson, Hendrick et al would be turning in their graves. 😢

Make no mistake, that performance before lunch yesterday was nowhere near first class standard.

  5. Strange decision to win the toss and bowl, it is normally flat there. The kindest thing you can say is that maybe Mickey wants a chase.

A number of no-balls and boundaries conceded, particularly for Conners, reflects badly on individuals and coaching staff (I’m a big fan of Conners by the way, but this is basic stuff).

Also, George first bowled with 131-0 on the board, yet ended with 5-49. Unbelievable really.

I can only hope they learn from their mistakes throughout this game and onto the next…
