Interesting...

This was sent to me yesterday and I thought it might be of interest to you. I would credit who did the work but don't know who it was.

Players out of contract at the end of this year and next: not totally accurate and there are one or two anomalies I have spotted.

Anyone in there of (realistic) interest? Apologies that the images result in some duplication.
Although Surrey have plenty out of contract, I agree that fee will leave.

Most interesting to me? Tom Taylor  - could he be persuaded back to Derbyshire? Rob Jones at Lancashire, Amar Virdi at Surrey...I have always thought Will Fraine at Yorkshire had something and is still young enough to develop. Lewis Goldsworthy at Somerset needs regular cricket and is a good all rounder.

I also rate Delroy Rawlins, who has left Sussex by mutual consent and is especially a very good one day player. I suspect he will not lack offers down south, however.

Ethan Brookes at Warwickshire is another with a lot of all round talent. He trialled at Derbyshire a couple of weeks back, but whether he impressed is anyone's guess. One would expect Ian Bell to be well aware of his merits.

But of course, as we know ourselves, they don't have to be out of contract in some cases...

It crossed my mind yesterday what our side might be like with Critchley, Whiteley, Slater and Taylor in it, not to mention Parkinson.

So it is not accurate to say that Derbyshire don't produce young players.

We have a problem in retaining them, in some cases.

  1. Absolute disgrace if the club are allowing Luis Du Plooy to run down his contract hopefully they are in dialogue with him regarding a new contract

    1. I know that the club have been discussing this for some time. But the reality is that if a player wants to go, they will do. Also a reality is that Test ground counties can afford to pay much more than we can.

And money, in a short career, is a major motivator for many. So there is no disgrace to be apportioned..

  2. Hi Peakfan,

Great post and a good find. Well done.

I would be absolutely delighted with Jack Haynes (Worcs) signing to replace the middle order of runs from du Plooy when he sadly leaves for Middlesex.

I would also go for Michael Jones as the second half of a new opening pair.

I would try to see if Toby Pettman (Notts) wants to leave his contract early since he is now 787th in line of the Notts seam department.

Lewis Gregory is a good shout for an all-rounder role or to replace Reece.

Any thoughts to the first three names? Sadly I could see larger countries going for all of the four.

    Thanks

    Gareth

    1. Haynes is a fine player and will have a few potential suitors. I like Jones too, good player with a solid record.

Pettman impressed me on loan and surely it is in his interests to get first team cricket sooner, rather than later?

His chances at Notts are very slim

Trevaskis from Durham would be a good shout, always rated him

  4. Two points: Rawlins appears to have left Sussex to, at least in the short term, spend more time in Bermuda. I'd be amazed if he signed a full-time county contract for next year--although he might come over just for the Blast. But, if he could get a deal, wouldn't MLC be a more obvious option for a Bermudan white-ball specialist?

Re du Plooy: your point about test match grounds' money is an interesting one, PF. Ordinarily I'd agree, but Middlesex (which is where he's rumoured to be going)? They're in financial crisis (owe millions as a result of bungled pensions payments, could only afford one overseas player in any format this year, and only signed one player last winter--apparently on a one-in, one-out basis!), and because they don't own or control their ground, have very limited money-raising options. Could they REALLY afford du Plooy more than Derbyshire?

  5. Bring Tom Lace home and get Toby Pettman out of his contract. That would make me a happy man. Kris

  6. I think I would look at signing 3 players that will be apart of important spine of the team. At moment looking at next season 5 players not including overseas see spine of the team. I don’t believe Haider Ali or Lakmal will be back next season. Think Haider shown lot character and we can all see he a talent. My hutch is that Micky will want player with bigger impact and someone can do match winning innings.

I think they should offer Wood and Came 2 year contract so they both have season not playing for future. They shown enough to merit a contract but at this time don’t think either get straight into my starting 11 need to show more consistency. They not far off they certainly have the talent to be good county cricketers.

Thomson has really made hard for Micky as most supporters expected to be gone. His performances recently been outstanding. I do believe cricketer needs to be constantly playing to get best. Any gaps when not played he struggled in past. That why hard decision.

    2. Came/Wood think club offer extension

    7. Dal
    8. Chappell
    9. Watt/Thomson
    10. Conners/Aitchison
    11. Overseas

I would look at Nick Browne the opportunity to play more cricket. Brad Wheal offers good competition in middle order and Matthew Carter again opportunities more game time.

  7. Interesting list. I'm guessing a number of these who are out of favour might get games while the Hundred is on. Virdi of Surrey is one that interests me as well. A few years ago he was being talked about as an England bowler. Steve Davies of Somerset is another who doesn't seem to be playing many games now. Can play as a top order batsman and cover for Brooke Guest as wicketkeeper albeit age may be an issue.

Another ex-Derbyshire on the list is Will Davis who never seemed to get a good chance even though he was a bit quicker than others.

  8. I agree, since Thomson has been made number one spinner, he's been excellent across the formats. Sometimes players need that faith in them and to be playing every game. Kris

  10. Some great talent up for grabs next season, so budget and balance would need to be considered, but I like the look of
Luke Wells, Nick Browne or Tom Lace as a proper opener
Louis Kimber, Lewis Goldworthy, Jack Haynes, Ed Pollock in the middler order (the latter in T20)
and Liam Trevaskis, Tom Taylor, Calvin Harrison and Amar Virdi as lower order/bowlers

  11. Somerset have a depth of talent particularly in the batting . Goldworthy and Bartlett would be very useful acquisitions plus Haynes at Worcestershire is very capable .Will Fraine is also a talent at Yorkshire .
If I was to determine the overseas it would be a strike bowler and a top 3 bat. I think the release list will be quite long this term ….Godleman,Reece,Scrimshaw ,McKiernan, Du Plooy .
It’s been good that we are doing our business early let’s hope that continues.

  12. Rishi Patel would have been top of my list if Leicestershire hadn’t already re-signed him. Still a lot of talent on that list though.
