He is a very good cricketer. At 24 he is not remotely close to his peak, but he has the opportunity to develop alongside a talented, equally young attack.
While he has made his name as a 20 over player, he is keen to play more cricket in the longer formats. He crossed my mind earlier in the season, when he bowled very well for the Worcestershire second team against that of Derbyshire in a 4-day game, looking to be far too good a player to languish in second team cricket.
A three-year deal is perfect, giving security to both player and club. He is an outstanding fielder and will obviously be a strong addition to the club's seam bowling strength.
Should we read anything into the club's publicity regarding the signing, where Sam Conners, Ben Aitchison, Zak Chappell and Nick Potts were mentioned but George Scrimshaw wasn't? I have previously written that I would be surprised if George was at the club next season, because I don't think the club can justify format specialists on full contracts. Notwithstanding his five wickets against Sussex last week, my gut feeling is that George sees himself as a short format player to preserve and extend his career.
Time will tell on that, but for Mickey Arthur to transform the fortunes of the county, as he said he planned to do, there need to be changes and there will be casualties of that change.
What is clear is that he is working quickly to bring in the players he most wants at the club, those with experience and a winning mentality.
David Lloyd was a solid recruit whose value might be better seen when the cricket starts next year. I suspect that he will be captain and his experience and cricketing nous will be of great value to the club.
Pat Brown is the next piece in the jigsaw. It gives Derbyshire a crop of talented young bowlers. If we can get a genuine attack leader, one of experience who can translate that into wickets on the field, that will make us a much stronger side.
Good work. I approve.
Wow, only seen from his stats that he's played T20 games for England. What's not to like about this signing. Welcome to Derbyshire, Pat
ReplyDeleteAs long as he can play across all formats, then a welcome addition. We simply must concentrate on acquiring multi format players, which is why I am expecting plenty of departures.
ReplyDeleteAs for Scrimshaw, it will be interesting to see how that pans out. On one hand he has spoken about being keen to play red ball cricket, but I wonder if he might fancy plying his trade in white ball and franchise cricket where there is plenty of money to be made and which might suit his body more. Another good showing in the Hundred might make the latter more accessible.
I agree Jasper, I can see quite a few departures this winter. Aitchison, Scrimshaw, Mckiernan to name a few
Deleteanother good signing with time and talent on his side, so quality recruitment after Lloyd. For me Lloyd is a great like for like replacement for Godleman at the top of the order, but for the likely departure of Du Plooy, I'd love to see Kiran Carlson of Glamorgan come in, but highly unlikely they'd let up follow Lloyd out of the door
ReplyDeleteHopefully Brown is over the injuries young bowlers get in their early 20's. He seems to have got a few wickets in the 2023 Blast. As for red ball, I really don't know what he will be like, as he doesn't have a track record. I'm expecting a Chappell esque experience. Good at T20 and chips in with a bit of red ball. Kris
ReplyDeleteMorning Peakfan, this is great news about Pat Brown. I think it shows the ambition of the club particularly following the signing of Lloyd, so well done to Mickey and the Executive Team. It is a shame about Du Plooy but hopefully a fully fit Lamb and Lloyd will make up for his departure in the coming seasons.
ReplyDeleteClay Cross Mark
Great news by any standards. It’ll be interesting to see him and Chappell (and hopefully a revitalised Conners) bowling together. If we could only get a more penetrative bowler (perhaps a spinner?) than Lakhmal, we could have a really strong attack next season.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a great signing. If we have Brown, Chappell, and a hopefully revitalised Conners next season, and a better overseas signing than Lakhmal (maybe a spinner?) then we ought to have a good prospect of bowling teams out twice next season. Quite a bit more reshaping of the bowling side of the squad will still be needed: jury is still out on McKiernan, Potts, Watt, for me. But Brown is a great signing.
