Durham v Derbyshire T20

Durham 223-2 (Lees 77*, Raine 71)

Derbyshire 168-5 (Reece 42, Du Plooy 53*)

Durham won by 55 runs

While giving due credit to the home side's powerful batting, I can only say that was one of the worst bowling and fielding displays I have seen by a Derbyshire side tonight.

With the exception of Wayne Madsen, no one seemed to be able to bowl anything close to the requisite line and length. There was poor handling in the field, fudged catches, dives over the top of the ball.. genuinely I cannot write about how poor that was.

There was never a chance of a win after such a display. Luis Reece batted nicely, as did Du Plooy, but we were never close to the rate. Even Durham fielding that was equally bad failed to make a difference.

I will leave it there. From a fan's perspective, that was woeful.

Let's just say I am not hopeful, ahead of Trent Bridge on Sunday.

    1. Tim I have not allowed this comment because of the inference you made that is patently unfair.

  2. The time has come to be critical of this Derbyshire team, it seems heads have totally dropped and we're starting to feel sorry for ourselves which is not a good sign. Ok, we have very few options to change the side but we have to be a lot better than these last four T20 matches. The bowling is dreadful nobody is looking a threat to take wickets, just all too easy to play against. The batting is slightly better but then again we don't have a big hitter who can score rapidly, we haven't had one for a considerable length of time as well. Time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and start being competitive, or we're finishing this campaign without a single T20 victory.

  3. Imo and for what it's worth Peakfan the bowling is and has been the issue. Teams have scored so heavily against us that either the batting collapses trying to keep up with the rate or tonight probably got a par score. Oh how we've missed RR! The batting has dug out of a hole time and again in the BWT but it's way to much of a task in the T20. Again for what's it's worth if we are poor why did we sign another senior keeper when HH is fine. Our blindingly obvious need for strengthening was not behind the stumps. It also shows HH we have no faith in him. No business I've ever worked in has senior people as back up just in case. I've nothing against the lad guest but we clearly need bowlers who can land it on the square. We are also feeding the fire of the what's the point in Derbyshire brigade. I like you are not often critical but we have had a bad couple of weeks in all competitions and show no sign of getting out of it. Disappointed Rob in Essex

  4. I can't understand the mentality. You're chasing 223, because of absolutely dreadful bowling, and you come out and start pushing the ball around for singles when you need 11 an over. These four T20 games have exposed weaknesses in our top order in this format. Last season, they performed brilliantly, but in this shortened season they have been unable to find the boundary enough times. Only du Plooy has reached 50. That tells you a lot. Watching our "run chase" tonight, you would never have guessed it was a T20 match. Yet when Durham came out to bat, they were aggressive and urgent from the first ball. Corky has a lot of work to do.

  5. Notts will smash us in to the ground Peakfan as will the other sides we still have to face. We really need to add some quality when this season ends, cancel all these loan signings none are good enough and hopefully the two Aussies will be available to give us some strength. This current eleven is so weak it's untrue. Big change needed this spring/winter

  6. That fielding performance was atrocious. The bowling poor with the exception of Madsen. What on earth was the plan batting? We threw the towel in? That was disgusting, we are a professional club! To make no real attempt to chase down a score against a club without a single win was appalling. I'm not overly critical of the young quicks as they lack experience. Ed Barnes will not make the grade I feel anyhow.

  7. As poor as Friday’s performance was I was at Southend in 1997 where Derbyshire managed to loose to Essex by an innings in less than two days play Derbyshire’s batting bowling and general attitude in that game was beyond belief

  8. I'm as disappointed as anyone about these poor results but some of the over-the-top criticisms here are disappointing and one or two outrageous. We know this is a much weaker squad than last year, but it's carrying all of the expectations from last year, as well as the expectations created from such a successful BWT campaign. Factor in a small squad reduced by injuries to Aitchison and FHP, a compressed timetable with little scope for recovery and no time for transition, and it's not surprising players are struggling.

For those myopically fixated on Derbyshire, it's not just our problem. Three of last year's semi-finalists have won 1 game out of 18 they've played so far. All three of these were fighting two days ago for places in the BWT final 2 days ago. The only side in last year's semi-finals to do well this year is Notts, who've been fighting for nothing in the BWT for weeks, and almost uniquely (and rather pathetically desperate) have brought in 2 overseas and a one-day specialist who's been doing nothing for the last 6 months.

It can hardly be coincidence (or a uniquely Derbyshire thing) that three of last year's semi-finalists who were also among the four strongest contenders for BWT final places are now bottom of their respective groups. This doesn't explain, excuse or make acceptable the sloppiness we saw tonight, but they haven't gone from being brave heroes to utter wasters in 5 days.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and reflect more analytically rather than just spewing out their disappointment and frustration.

    1. I agree, not over yet. Teams will have off days, but what disappointed me most tonight was the fielding.

Last year we were fantastic in our catching, stopping and speed in getting throws in. At top level, such things SHOULD be a given and while I can understand bowlers missing their length, with such a small margin of error, this was a nigh collective failing tonight, with the honourable exception of Madsen.

You are right. Ravi has been missed all season, FHP too as well as Aitchison and I can only assume Hughes is also injured, as he played a key role last year in the middle overs. To call them a bad side is silly, in the light of their efforts this year, but disappointment in the performance is understandable.

As for the batting, the main difference was that they hit lengths and bowled to fields. We also kept hitting fielders with our powerful shots, while they unerringly found gaps. Mind you, given a serving of full tosses and long hops, together with room to swing my arms, I might still do the same!

As Cork said afterwards, it was a 180 pitch, but the two worst bowling performances I have seen by a Derbyshire side have now been at The Riverside.

I expect a positive reaction on Sunday, though not a win against a team that is desperate to win something to salvage a wreck of a season.

  9. It seems as though the management team a set on failure as continuing to field the same team game in game out, with the only changes being bizarre selections that aren't required?! Alex Hughes bowls well and top scores in the game before and is dropped?

We need to be focusing on a bowling unit who can provide variety. Madsen, Cricthley, Hughes are key to that and the seamers you could just pick out of a hat. McKiernan has looked good in the 4 day game and tonight, so I think he deserves a good run in the side and shouldn't be moved in and out which gives us another bowling option. Anuj Dal unfortunately is a wasted position in the side, as batting 7/8 and just bowling odd overs is taking up a spot for a proper batsman.

The top 4 have performed well over the past couple of years, so it is hard to criticise, but after that we are left with all rounders and bit part players to try and excellent the scoring rate and get us over the line in run chases, which isnt going to happen. I feel sorry for Tom Wood as our only other proper batsman in the squad, he has great 2nd team stats, performs in Oz and the DCPL, but never seems to be given a chance? For those who have seen him play, he is one of our best white ball batsman and can score at a run a ball plus with ease. It doesnt make sense that we are struggling with the bat and the only batsman we have available is just being left out every game?! I hope he gets a run in the side, but as usual with Derbyshire, we will no doubt look to bring in loan signings or other counties cast offs instead of trying to develop our own. Especially in this bizarre covid effected season, if we can get 1 or 2 squad players coming through it only helps bolster the team for next season.

Hopefully something will change ... but I wont hold by breath. Steve A (Spondon)

    1. With the exception of Tom Wood we have no real options, Steve.

A small squad and too many injuries effectively sees the team pick itself.

But like you, I would have wanted to see Tom given an opportunity at the top of the order. The top four was fantastic last year and are individually excellent, but he should still get a few games.

I would also have Dal in earlier. He scores quickly and runs like a gazelle...

    2. Yes I am not against Dal batting higher, but needs to be given the opportunity and a bit of time to build an innings (although you dont get much time in T20).

I think upon reflection of last night, why not give some of the squad players a good run in the side between now and the end of the campaign? As that will only improve our squad for the future and you never know, some of these lads might perform and become 1st team regulars. But without consistent opportunity, that will never happen.

Wood could open or bat 5, with the top 4 being pretty much immovable, which is fair enough.

I honestly think with a bit of a rethink we could have a positive end to the T20 campaign, but to continue to make the same errors is frustrating to watch as a supporter. We have so many options with the ball, especially in T20, it seems silly not to give a couple of the squad players a real go with the bat.

It will be a tough game against one of the best sides in the country at Notts, so it will be hard to judge on the next performance, but a good run of games and opportunities with bat and ball for some of the fringe players will hopefully round off a good red ball campaign with some positives in the T20, because at the minute there has been very little. 3. I'd have given Dal a chance with the ball. Banging the ball in wasn't working and slower pace might have been more suitable on what was a good batting wicket. Whilst he was expensive Cohen did chase the batsman and produced some good deliveries.

  10. Tom Wood clearly deserves a chance. I'd also be tempted to see if Joss Morgan is available for the last few games, he's another power hitter who could step up. If neither do then we are no worse off.

We should be looking to get the majority of our bowling overs from Critchley, Hughes, Maddo, du Plooy and McKiernan. Our young pace bowlers have really, really struggled. In the T20 game the best option is usually taking pace off the ball unless your pace bowlers are exceptional within the format. Ours aren't.

    1. Couldn't agree more James. Most of our overs should come from the 3-4 all rounds, so no need to pick more than 2 seamers, as like you said, they have struggled.

If we do this it allows space for more batsman like Wood to open or 5, who in my opinion HAS to know play every game between now and the end of the season! And then even Dal/McKiernan given a go at 5/6? I haven't seen much of Joss Morgan, except when he has played in the DCPL, so cant comment too much, but again wouldn't do us any harm.

Like you say, we have nothing to lose, as the performances have been poor and if some of these other squad players come off, then we have gained in the long term! Steve A (Spondon)

  11. If Tom Wood doesn't get a chance against Notts, I'd be amazed. With no chance of getting to the quarter finals now, it's a good opportunity to give him some game time. And why not rest Madsen, who has hit a poor patch, which can happen to anyone, and put Dal in at three, where he's got time to build an innings?

    1. Not a bad shout. I'd say out of the top 4 Billy has struggled the most, but he will no doubt not want to be rested. I think at present we need Madsens bowling.

Who ever gets given the opportunity I think need to be given a few games and not just the tough game against Notts and then moved back out if it doesn't work. Steve A (Spondon)

  12. With FHP injured and present form the team now picks itself
    1) Wood
    2) Godleman
    3) Reece
    4) Madsen
    5) duploy
    6) Critchley
    7) Hughes
    8) Dal
    9) Husain
    10) mckeirnan
    11)). Connors

Packed with batting at least 8 bowling options. Mainly pace off. I’d probably give Wood a try with the ball. He often opens the bowling for Ticknall with fast accurate off spin. Rarely goes above 3s These are the things that need trying now as we build for next year

  13. Derbyshire’s obsession with filling the term with bits and pieces players isn’t working Tom Wood must wonder why he was offered a contact?
