Wood's innings makes Cork look rather silly. Almost since game 1 there was a clear case to play him.

  3. I’m not one to normally say I told you so but in this instance. “I FLIPPING TOLD YOU SO”. Tom Wood played the best innings of our campaign. Why oh why did it take the management 10 games before they thought it might have value when every one on this blog as been saying it since the start of the campaign. ???. It’s really not that hard for anyone who’s seen the lad play. Hopefully we are big enough to see our mistakes and give him the contract he deserves . At 26 he is clearly a powerful lad, I could see him playing all formats .
It’s a shame we couldn’t sign off with a win but Connors and Melton did well with very little experience. Crich and Yozza kept it under control in this middle overs but it’s the hardest job to close out a game like that with 2 very good batsman set and we just fell short by the smallest of margins. Thank God it was not like Thursday night which quite frankly was embarrassing. Lots to work on but a few green shoots came through today.

  4. I follow the 2 comments above .. Tom Wood! Need any of us say more?!

After being told about this blog a few months ago, I have enjoyed hearing views from other supporters, but to be honest I was close to stopping my comments due to the frustration with Cork and co for not giving Tom Wood an opportunity after endless poor performances from the rest of the top order and seemingly nothing to lose! How silly he looks now .. to be the only player in the squad not given a chance when every other position has been rotated during the season is nothing short of clueless! Especially, as we saw today, how most people around the Derbyshire leagues knew how much of an impact he could have given the opportunity!

Cork needs to be held accountable for not giving Wood and the likes of Dal a real run in the side, in a season that's only positive could have been the development of the less experienced members of the squad, which would surely help us going in to next season. The fact the bowlers we constantly rotated, but not the batsmen, even after each poor performance!?

I will await to see what contracts Derbyshire offer these lads for next season and to be honest I will be suprised if a lot of them dont start looking for counties elsewhere who will give them an opportunity to develop!

I apologise to all for the rant. This isnt just about Tom Wood, but from years of seeing talented local cricketers not given an opportunity with a largely failing county. I just dont get it?! Why not work on giving these youngsters an opportunity instead of continually relying on kolpaks and overseas stars?!

All in all, it wasn't a bad performance, with the middle to lower order failing to capitalise on an almost perfect start. Not much grumbles with the ball when the captain of the England Test team steers the opposition home against our inexperienced bowling unit.

Lots of questions and planning to be done over the winter it seems. Steve A (Spondon)

  5. Tom Wood should have played every match in T20. The vast majority of Derbyshire CCC supporters have been using social media to make this suggestion for two months.

This has been a disappointing campaign and although we have been depleted by not having Ravi, many teams have also suffered from players being not available. Counties with similar tight budgets such as Leicestershire and Northamptonshire have had far better seasons. Even though all our games have been away, we still should have done far better.

Do we need a specialist T20 coach? The money saved on Cork's wages could be used to give Tom Wood a full-time contract in all formats. We have not produced a good batsman through our academy for many years and Wood needs to be encouraged to open in all formats. He has enough talent to play more regularly. Reece can move down the order to three and it will also help his bowling.

Once again, thank you for providing another season of excellent articles and comments. Hopefully, next season we can all return back to the County Ground.

  6. People do forget we made the quarters in 2017 and finals day in 2019. Not good this year, but look at Yorkshire's record, the biggest club in the world. Kris

  7. I can only echo comments above. I don't think any of us are saying Tom Wood is the greatest T20 batsman in the country. What we're saying is because they top order failed so dismally as a unit in this campaign, he should have been given a chance. Today he got that chance, and he performed: 67 runs from 28 balls. Also, I think his aggression spurred on Billy" 49 from 39.e
We should have been clear winners today, but we fell apart in the last 20 overs. I din't blame the bowlers. We should have reached 200
after the start Billy and Tom Wood gave us.

    1. It was a good knock from wood but took him a 'little' more than 28 balls. We fell away last 6-7 overs of each innings. Back to the pre 2017 stuff unfortunately.

  9. Far too many failures at the top of the innings put pressure on lower order all the time.Billy is not a hitter and should concentrate on what he does well in 4 day cricket Wood should open and Mads should be captain
