In most other seasons of recent memory, Matt Lineker would have had a first team chance by now.
Last week I mentioned the consistency - solid, if not spectacular - of the batting line-up and Lineker, like Paul Borrington, has been unable to break into the side. Borrington has scored bucketfuls of runs with Ticknall this summer and has been steady, though not quite so prolific, for the Seconds.
Lineker, for a number of years the scourge of Premier League bowlers, has had his struggles in the Second XI. There have handy thirties and forties, but not enough big scores to make a convincing case for elevation to the senior side. Of course, there is a world of difference in playing cricket every day, for a living, and playing at the weekends. The levels of physical and mental fitness required are substantially different and doubtless Lineker found this transition as difficult as many others before him.
The signs are, however, that he has got there. 125 against Warwickshire recently was a worthy effort, while an unbeaten 165 against Leicestershire yesterday was indicative of a man who has got to grips with the requirements of professional cricket. The big question is, of course, whether it will be enough to earn him a full contract for next season, following on from his summer deal of this year.
That Lineker is a fine batsman is beyond dispute. The volume of runs he has scored over recent years indicates a player of quality, but Karl Krikken has two factors to take into account when mulling over his suitability for next year and beyond. For one thing, at 26 Lineker will not earn Derbyshire any ECB money. While mercenary, that is also a realistic consideration. If Krikken and his coaches feel that Lineker could genuinely make a prolific county batsman it would not be a deal breaker, but the other factor is, for me, the biggie.
Is he better than Hamza Siddique, Ben Slater or Peter Burgoyne? For that matter, is he a better option, to pick a name at random, than someone like Michael Thornely, who has done well for the Unicorns this summer and is crucially, at 23, a player who can offer a county three years of income. Derbyshire have only a finite budget and how it is best spent will doubtless occupy the thoughts of Karl Krikken in the coming months.
Once he knows (if he doesn't already) the plans of Greg Smith and Tim Groenewald he will be better placed. Replacing those players and Steffan Jones would be essential, but there are any number of ways in which to do so. There will also be a lot of players out there at the end of contracts, a number of others seeking an opportunity.
I would like to think that our players might follow the example of Jack Brooks, who today signed an extended contract at Northamptonshire despite interest from other counties. At 27 Brooks was a later starter and is rewarding the county who took a punt on him with another two years service. While no one can blame any individual for wanting the best deal for themselves, it is nice to see a player decide that his best option is to stay put, presumably better rewarded as a result.
Thumbs up for Mr Brooks from me. Hopefully at least one of ours in a similar situation might seek to follow his lead.
I understand Mr Smith is off to the 1st Division and has the choice of many suitors, whilst Surrey are the favourites for Mr Groenewald.

Would be nice to see either bozza or linekar get a chance this year but with the team playing really well in the championship and in contention for promotion it is unlikely they will get a game this season. Both are excellent in the premier league and 2nd XI but how big a jump is it from this level to first class cricket, or possibly division 1 first class cricket next year? Pyschologically it's a big step. Maybe Borrington's injury at the start of the year was a blessing in disguise as he is now playing unbelievably well in the premier league and scored yet another century at the weekend which i think is his 8th. He is playing regularly and he has probably learnt a lot about his game as he was renowned as a blocker but he has shown he is more than capable to score at a quick rate. Hopefully he can be a big player for us in the future along with the likes of Knight and Burgoyne with the latter having a good game in a losing cause for England u19's. He scored 18 not out off 9 balls to get Engalnd up to 300 and then took 1 for 40 from 6 overs which is a decent effort in the circumstances. Tom Knight didn't play. The future is looking good Mr Peakfan

I think Lineker has to be worth another season. Like you say peakfan,it,s a big step up for him and i think he,s made very good progress. Enough to earn another crack of the whip. I would also take Thornley on as he has proved himself capable against county players.
ReplyDeleteI take your point about ECB money peakfan, but we can,t let it rule our lives entirely. What happens when some of our younger players reach that magical age of 26,as one day they surely will. Do we hoof them out and play younger players, simply to keep the cash rolling in?. There is also no guarantee how long these payments may last. Who knows, they could end as quickly as they started.
I don.t think another season for Lineker would break the bank. Unlike Borrington,he has so far had no opportunity to show what he,s made of and i think he deserves one.
Timmy g and greg smith will probably fine out the grass isnt greener. both could fine 1st team appearances are limited.
ReplyDeleteI don,t think Smith,s good enough for division one anyway. He hasn,t exactly set the world on fire in our division. Groenewald might be,then again....
ReplyDeleteBoth groenewald and smith are very useful players and I would like to see both of them stay although if they do leave i believe we wont have too many difficulties replacing them. Notice Linekar got another century today in the second innings of the 2nd XI game.

Whilst Smith has not always seemed to adhere himself to Derbyshire fans he generally gets over 800 championship runs each year and over 30 wickets and is a very good fielder. There are very few players in the country that do this consistently. As he proved on Sunday he is useful in the one dayers aswell. I hope we realise his value when offering him a new contract.
ReplyDeletePeakfan, you have neglected to say that Tom Poynton also scored another century in the Second XI game. Sutton has 'blocked' well in the championship but in the one day games I have seen this season both Sutton's keeping and batting have been 'poor'.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Smith is a bowler who can get a few runs (occasionally). He,s never managed 1000 runs in any season so far and won,t do this year. Im not really bothered if he stays or goes, but if he does stay then he has to bat lower down the order. His stats just don,t stack up as a front line batsman.
ReplyDeleteGroenewald has signed a 3 year contract today
