Leicestershire v Derbyshire

Well, another close finish that went the wrong way...

Good effort again by the boys, but Mark Turner took some late stick from the sound of it and we lost in narrow fashion.

For me it ends our T20 interest and we´d need real luck with results to progress from here. While not having studied results and fixtures, we´re probably mathematically stil in it but logic suggests we´re playing for honour now.

We´ll see. Catch you later.

  1. PEAKFAN - love your blog but youve had too much sun this time - that was an appalling and criminal loss from 4 overs out with shocking captaincy to boot - gutted with that effort

  2. looks like it will not cost Peter Gadsby a penny , surprise surprise

  3. At the time when Derbyshire County Cricket Club were telling us all that there was no such thing as a second overseas player Leicestershire signed Razzaq. Enough said.

  4. I have to agree with the earlier comment that bad captaincy cost us the match again. Why bowl a bowler who at not bowled in our 14 Twenty/20 matches at the end when we had got plenty of other options?
Why no Palladino again, our best bowler this season?
Why no Poynton? who can bat a bit whilst the captain has only scored 3 runs in the whole 20/20 campaign!
We were a decent bet to qualify for the knockout stages this year as the North Section is probably the weakest it has ever been. Why couldn't someone at the club see we were a bowler short and do something about it when Khwaja went?

  5. The Falcons Forum has 4 pages on the 'poor' captain! Whilst I would love to see JM back I am affraid he 'boobed' in bringing Sutton back!

  6. I would like Barnett and Malcolm playing again but they are our past and so is Morris . I would also like to not lose from a great position but WE ARE
    DERBYSHIRE .

  7. Its very disappointing to lose another game we should have won. Once again it,s the seam department that cost us the game.

Who on earth decided to pick Turner?. He,s been clattered in virtually every game he,s played this season. Can anyone remember who signed him!!!. We might have to pay him,but we certainly don,t have to play him. He,s hopeless.

Smith and Hughes bowled well and got us right back in it. Im still wondering why Durston only bowled two overs,as did Clare, though in his case i can understand it.

Arguably, the loss of Knight was the most telling factor and one which was obviously beyond our control. Whatever compensation we may recieve from our mates at the ECB would,i imagine,be far less than we may have gained from a place in the T20 quarter final.

Everybody beats Northants,so tonights game should be a formality. Then again, there,s always the Turner factor!.

  8. By the way, anyone notice Botha,s figures in Warwickshires last game.

  9. Sutton's captaincy is absolutely appalling and his performance is pi** poor as well. I fear to think what Guptill makes of it. There are positives, however- Tom Knight, being the main one but also Ross Whitely, Tom Pointon and Chesney Hughes.

  10. Any team news for tonight? because if Sutton is playing again I'm going golfing!

  11. Forget Botha it would be a backward step. We keep producing players who clear off to give another county their best years and then when no one else wants them they suddenly love Derbyshire!

  12. Apart from our batting in the last 5 overs and the catch from Guptil we were very poor again against Northants and another poor result.

  13. For the rest of the season, apart from in emergencies, I wouldn't play any of the players like Groenewald, Smith and Jones who are looking to get away. We ought to play those that want to stay and a have a look at our other options.

  14. Sorry folks, can´t get into Blogger today due to some technical issue which doesn´t recognise the account and is all in Spanish...
Once again we´ve run out of steam in the T20 when well-placed. I´ll write more about the campaign on my return on Monday.

  15. When doing your T20 review it will be hard to decide who gets the lowest marks out of 10. Sutton or Clare? Highest marks won't be so difficult?

  16. It simply highlights the weaknesses we have in this squad. Too many of our senior players have failed to live up to expectations. An odd score here and there is not good enough and too often our seam bowlers have proved far too expensive.

As anon points out, with regard to playing alias Smith,Jones and Groenewald, should we be playing them?. I would give Smith and Groenewald until the end of this month to sign, otherwise goodbye. Im not even sure we need Smith anyway. He,s a decent bowler but his batting is not good enough to be considered a front line batsmen. It never has been and if he does end up staying then serious consideration should be given as to where he actually bats. A good team would not have Smith batting in the top six.

I also think we,ve missed a trick batting Whiteley at six and seven. He,s not going to come off every match, but surely a player who can hit the ball as well as he can should be given maximum opportunity to do so. He should have been at three, there,s even a case for him opening. It,s only twenty overs when all,s said and done so why not give the lad a chance. We persisted long enough with Hughes at three.

A very disappointing end to a competition we could have done much better in.

  17. to lump steff in with TG and smith is not right. Steff always gives 100 per cent and at the end of his career should put his family first. brewbeard

  18. I wasn,t lumping Steff in with the other two, other than the fact he is leaving, albeit in different circumstances. Some might see it as an ideal opportunity to play someone who isn,t leaving. As for Smith and Groenewald, the ball is in their court. For me,if they dont sign they dont play.End of story.

  19. fair enough. i wouldnt give them a month thats nearly the end of the season. two games should be long enough. after the yorkies (in which they should not play) i would say sign or go as we need to start planning. i dont mind either way just stop pandering to them. plenty of youngsters would pay to play. brewbeard

  20. It wont change anything,no matter what happens at any hearing. Him and Morris are history and that,s how it will stay.

I agree with you brewbeard. I wouldn,t pander to anyone who wanted to leave. According to what the chairman said, contract talks will begin following the T20,so we should here the outcome in the near future. I don,t know which players will be involved, other than Smith and Groenewald would presumably be two of them.

  21. He did put money into the club. To cover what HE lost us. Did you not listen to his final interview on the website?. He admitted himself last seasons losses were his fault. That was straight from the horse,s mouth.

Those sort of losses are unsustainable, even if we had seen some sort of success on the field, which of course we didn,t. However you look at it,the previous regime was a failure in all aspects. You cannot say otherwise. I accept there are those are those who supported them and didn,t want change, but i attend many games both home and away and i,ve met very few people who are sad to see the back of them. Quite the contrary.

Success is not going to happen overnight and i am as critical as anyone when things go wrong, but the new way forward has to be given time to mature. It deserves that,at least.

  22. Marc,
I don't know how you can criticise the work Don Amott has done for the club. The man is a Derbyshire Legend!

  23. another poor performance from Smith,I for one would not be sorry for this player to leave the club, let's nurture players who see future here and not just n over inflated pay check.
