Derbyshire v SACA day 1

Derbyshire 406-5 (Jewell 101 retired, Came 76 retired, Madsen 66 retired, Lloyd 61, Guest 55 not out)

SACA 42-1

Derbyshire lead by 364 runs

Apologies for the late arrival of today's blog, but Mother's Day is Mother's Day and it has been nice to have the family around for most of it.

Having said that, it was Father's Day earlier and I got to see most of today's play at the County Ground.

Very enjoyable it was too. A first sighting of Caleb Jewell was rewarding, the Tasmanian making a splendid century before retiring, unbeaten. There were some delightful shots through the covers and, like most of his kind, he is very strong off the pads. On the basis of today, he will be good to watch this year.

So too will David Lloyd, who batted very fluently until adjudged lbw. Wayne Madsen and Harry Came also did well,  the latter looking in very good nick at this stage of the summer, the former pretty much as he has been throughout his career.

Although the scorebook read 406-5, only Lloyd and Reece were dismissed by opponents who featured four players (Basra, Johal, Khan and Perera) who appeared in Derbyshire's second team last summer. They stuck to their task well but the home side scored fluently throughout the day on a very good pitch.

They replied with 42-1 by the close and there should be more good, hard work in store, with a favourable forecast, over the next two days.

It made for enjoyable watching and a refreshing change from last year, when we hardly got outside before the season began.

More from me tomorrow.

  1. 8 wickets in the current match for Blair Tickner. Hitting form at the right time 👍

    1. Yes, 8-48 in 24 overs is fine work. He has had a very good season, to be fair. Let's hope that translates into Derbyshire form, too!

Is the plan for him to be here and involved in game 1? Fair old trek but doable with enough prep time to just about be ready and his body clock set right!

    1. No they have already said it would be game 2 he would be playing. Don't think 24 hours on a plane then opening the bowling is a good thing for muscles!

  3. Maybe the stars are aligning..... Thought I would get my last bit of March optimism out there before the harsh reality sets in! 😉

  4. Great to see cricket being played in good conditions and everyone getting useful practice in.
When everyone is moaning about playing cricket so early in the year next time it's raining in March they should be reminded of March 25 and the vagaries of our weather.

  5. I noticed that Hamid Qadri once of Derbyshire was released by Kent and is playing for the opposition in this game.

Certainly a decent player in there potential wise as a bowler who can also bat.

    1. Perhaps, but I would only agree 'decent'

Not sure he is much better than Thomson tbh, and didn't appear to worry anyone yesterday. With 3 spinners already, doubt we would express interest, unless a few games for the 2s

    2. I'm a big fan of bringing local players back to the club, but only when I think there is talent to work with. The brothers Taylor would be top of the list but I'd not discount Qadri.

He has a very similar record to Thomson and yet is 7 years younger. I'd not count yesterdays performance against him either, he's a spinner and it's March for goodness sake.

    3. Just don't think he did much at Kent on dryer surfaces than Derby. And with three spinners plus the T20 overseas, I don't see him essential for us. If he proves me wrong, good luck to the lad, but I would be surprised
