Derbyshire v Oxford UCCE

Derbyshire 341-4 and 227-4

Oxford UCCE 123 and 148 (Patel 35, Lloyd 5-13)

Derbyshire won by 297 runs

Derbyshire duly wrapped up a convincing win over Oxford UCCE this afternoon, ending a pre-season friendly that could scarcely have gone better.

They will face much stiffer opposition as the summer progresses, of course, but they handled their opponents with professionalism and it was good to see how well things went in all aspects of the game.

David Lloyd was the destroyer-in-chief, taking five wickets for just thirteen runs with his offspin. He could be a useful asset to the county this summer, allowing the batting to be lengthened, If required, but to no detriment of the balance of the side.

Nye Donald had some time behind the stumps, while Brooke Guest ran around the outfield with his regular smile never far away. Eight bowlers were used and have got useful overs under their belts in this match.

The mood appeared to be good and it will be interesting to see what changes are made to the eleven for the three-day match against SACA, which starts on Sunday. Then it will be full steam ahead to the opening County Championship game of the summer, against Gloucestershire at Derby on Friday of next week.

Interesting news broke on that game yesterday, with both of their overseas players,  Cameron Bancroft and Cameron Green, missing from the visiting ranks until their second fixture.

At least Caleb Jewell has arrived safely in Derby for his summer with the county. He will undoubtedly play in the final warm-up match, but the eyes of the Derbyshire coaching staff will be on New Zealand tomorrow evening, when Central Stags play their final match of the season against Auckland Aces.

Hopefully Blair Tickner will be fit to take his place in their eleven. If he isn't, it may require Mickey Arthur to go back to the drawing board with a plan B.

More from me soon.

  1. An emphatic win, which should be good for team confidence, which seemed to be low in some games last season.

  2. If Tickner and Aitchison are unavailable, I think Potts has to play, as we don't have another opening bowler and he's bowled decently in this game. Otherwise, it's a choice between Lloyd and Donald. The latter wins for a spin option.

    1. Think Lloyd can cover the spin option, so Donald can come in for Morley. Tickner in for Potts if fit. If not I prefer Brown. I would open with Came with Lloyd in at 3. Grant from Telford

  3. Tickner not available for opening match (whether fit or not).

    1. Yes, I know, Simon. I meant more for the season...a shoulder problem for a quick bowler can take a long while to resolve...

  4. Sorry, I meant former not latter on my previous post. I would go Potts over Brown, because Potts is more of an opening strike bowler. I see Brown as a first or second change. With the unusually dry conditions, we could even play 2 spinners? Kris

  5. Trying to work out what the first line up will be I think I initially ended up with 13 or 14.

I think 3, 4 & 5 are inked in after the opening warm up game. I would expect David Lloyd to open with Caleb Jewell to give a left/right hand opening partnership. Luis Reece should play as he gives variety to the bowling. As the slip corden included Nye Donald for most of the Oxford game it suggests he is likely to play as well. It also gives us the option that if we needed to find another opener we could use Brooke Guest and then Donald could share the gloves to gice him a rest.

For me Anuj Dal & Martin Andersson are too similar to both play so one of them may miss out. David Lloyd’s wickets may be tempting to use him as the sole spinner but I would prefer to have Lloyd as a second spinner so I would include Jack Morley to give us a left / right spin option. As we will need bowl some spin to avoid over rate penalties.

As Nick Potts opened the bowling it suggests he is just ahead of Pat Brown but both could be included if David Lloyd is sole spinner.

Currently my teams looks something like this, though there is still time to change before next week.

    Jewell
    Lloyd
    Came
    Madsen

    Reece
    Donald
    Andersson / Dal
    Chappell
    Potts / Brown

  6. I was thinking about this season what would be the best order. I think that if you look at Jewell it maybe wise to play him where he been batting for Tasmania. I don’t think opening position in April for new overseas is wise. As conditions will be very different for him. I also think Came/Reece play there best cricket higher up the order. I can see order being changed quite few times early on. I think we need to give Potts the opportunity. In April type bowler he is the best opportunity to see where he is now as a player. This will be a make or break season and hope he can show the talent we saw early on his career. I would leave Anderson and Donald out to start. I expect they play if anyone doesn’t hit ground running early season. As both players will be eager play red ball.

    1. That batting line up looks a bit odd with a long tail. Came needs to open and Madsen bat at 4. Andersson and Donald in for Morley and Potts for me. Grant from Telford

  7. Three wickets for Tickner overnight so hopefully he's fit
