Northamptonshire 235 (Gay 59, Bartlett 50, Zaib 42, Chappell 4-39, Patel 3-41, Moore 1-29, Reece 1-73)
Derbyshire 236-8 (Chappell 94*, Whiteley 65, Weatherall 4-50, Sanderson 2-32)
Derbyshire won by 2 wickets with eight balls to spare
They did pretty well earlier on, dismissing Northamptonshire for 235. Zak Chappell bowled beautifully in taking 4-39, while Samit Patel took 3-41. Harry Moore bowled accurately and very well for figures of 1-29 that failed to flatter him, but the feeling persisted that the home side's score, aided by sloppy fielding, missed catches and 26 extras, was more than they should have got in conditions helpful for bowling.
Gay, Bartlett and Zaib batted well and showed that it was possible to score runs on a good cricket wicket, if you had the technique and a little bit of luck to go with it.
Derbyshire started well, but 26-0 became 45-5, which in turn became 79-7 as good bowling combined with some injudicious stroke play to destroy what had looked a lengthy batting order.
Or had it? Whiteley, who had earlier captained the side with cool common sense, came in to play an innings of remarkable restraint, his eventual 65 taking 99 deliveries and with only six boundaries. It was workmanlike and professional, in the knowledge that there were only two wickets to follow.
Chappell came in and with with a series of trademark blows, bludgeons and edges, went past his 50 and got his side back into the game. The partnership went past 100 and had reached 131 before the captain, eyeing the leg side boundary, holed out in the deep with only 26 needed from six overs. It was a shot that didn't have to be played, but he had got his side back into the game and deserves great credit for his efforts today.
Harry Moore then joined Chappell and any fears that the uninitiated may have had over his batting ability were allayed with crisp footwork and pleasant shots. He gave his senior partner the strike and Chappell scored the winning runs with his 12th boundary, an edge to third man which left him unbeaten on 94. Batting at number nine...
It was a remarkable effort by Chappell, one that will doubtless bring warm feelings and memories in his dotage. Rightly so, because to all intents and purposes, this game had gone when he joined his captain at the crease.
It is good to get off to a winning start, but that victory should not mask another batting display of considerable mediocrity. Such a recovery cannot happen all the time and the batting unit as a whole has to take on greater responsibility in the building of totals. I accept we are two batters light, but there is still enough talent in this side to be able to handle such a run chase.
Middlesex are next, at Derby on Saturday. They were hammered by Worcestershire today and will be smarting to atone for that defeat.
I would like to see Bin Naeem brought into the side and given his head. At seventeen and still with a year of school ahead of him, Moore looked like he belonged today. I have every confidence that his young Academy teammate will do exactly that, if he is given a run in the side.
He should have been there today, after an excellent innings against Cheshire and he he should be given the opportunity as soon as possible.
But to close, well done Derbyshire. Specifically, well done to Ross Whiteley, Harry Moore and especially Zak Chappell.
You and we will remember this one for a long time to come.
There is a little bit of a young Stuart Broad about Moore. How he only got one wicket is beyond me. However, the day belongs to Chappell, with a worthy contribution from the skipper. Kris
ReplyDeleteI was getting a bit of Jon Clare from him, a very good player who left too soon. Talented lad, for sure!
DeleteI'm going to get in here quick and take the plaudits for my Ross comments yesterday!
ReplyDeleteJoking aside, what a relief. Zac has actually had a good season for us, and can't say that about many.
As always, difficult to disagree with your summary Steve. But whilst Middlesex may be smarting come Saturday, surely our confidence will be much improved. The top 7 can't be that poor again. Also, think we are a better side than them in this competition.
Phew!
On paper, we have a side good enough to progress in this competition. But that needs to translate onto the pitch. We bat down to 10, have plenty of bowling options and the additional youth in the field makes a difference
DeleteAn absolute disgrace that Bin Naeem wasn't in the starting eleven. What message does this send to our younger players ? Particularly when messrs Lamb and Reece (in particular) seem to have forgotten how to bat. Absurd shot by Samit too ! Wonderful all round performance from Zak.
ReplyDeleteI don't really agree with Whiteley being a flop. He's won us 2 T20's and did well today. I think he's on par for the course, a bit like Donald, who won us 3 T20's. If you look at the seasons Notts and Kent are having, we aren't the only ones struggling. We just needed better overseas!!! Kris
ReplyDeleteYes it’s a fair way to look at it. If Donald wins us 3, Ross 2 and we’d signed 2 overseas capable of winning a couple more we’d have progressed.
DeleteWow, how to do it the ridiculous hard way Derbyshire. That game was absolutely dead and buried with another abysmal top order batting display from Derbyshire, but big shout out to Ross and a standing ovation for Zak Chappell what a bloody innings, didn’t know he had it in him, fantastic . If I'm being picky though 235 shouldn't have been a tall order in 50 overs but we have far too many batsmen out of form, Reece, Lloyd, Lamb, shouldn't be starting but they know their place is safe because we have zero other options. Bin Naeem has to start in place of Lamb or Wagstaff against Middlesex.
ReplyDeleteGreat win today but the batting has to improve ten fold
Chappel has the equal 2nd most 50s in the champtionship this year and the fastest strike rate. never in doubt lol ;)
DeleteFacet (sorry forgot name)
DeleteThought we were dead and buried with seven down but congratulations to Ross Whiteley in playing a captains innings and Zak Chappell’s man of the match performance. We bowled well to keep Northants to a below par total but, once again, the batting let us down. Top six back in the pavilion before we had made real inroads was disappointing to say the least. Don’t know what’s wrong with the mindset with poor shot selection when there was little pressure to score quickly. They are all experienced professionals and yet look completely out of sorts.
ReplyDeleteThe bowling, on the other hand, was very good with Chappell, Patel and young Moore the picks. Good that Harry Moore has been given an opportunity here and hope he is joined by Bin Naeem during this competition. This is an ideal chance to give them experience at this level. Too often our young players don’t get these opportunities and that is detrimental to their development.
Nudger
Thought that was an excellent game of cricket on an excellent pitch that produced a balanced battle between bat and ball.
ReplyDeleteHave to admit I was ready to throw the towel in at 79-7, but it quickly became apparent that it was still a chase able target if Whiteley and Chappell batted sensibly enough. It was special from Chappell, the only disappointment was he couldn’t get his first century.
Bin Naeem has to come into the team and what I wouldn’t give for us to pluck an overseas batsman from somewhere…
...and let's not forget, for last week's 'winner takes all' T20, Zak Chappell was not selected, dropped, not required, persona non grata.... 🤷♂️
ReplyDeleteA win is a win, but we can go better again if everyone fires properly. So pleased that we have something positive to read and for you to blog about Steve.
ReplyDeleteQuite put a smile on my face this evening.
Andy
Totally unexpected after our sloppy fielding display and dismal batting till Whiteley and Chappell came together. An all round fantastic display by the latter. But I agree that Bin Naeem must get a chance for the Middlesex game.
ReplyDeleteChappell and Whiteley pulled off an incredible win, with young Harry Moore (who bowled brilliantly) keeping calm at the end. This was the Derbyshire I want to see: we are heading for defeat and then two players some in and bat sensibly, always keeping the scoreboard ticking over with ones and twos. And this was after Chappell who got a knock while batting - picked up four wickets.
ReplyDeleteHowever, how on earth did so many players fail to register a decent score? So many of our top order look out of form. It's worrying.
It does show the big advantage of batting second. The team batting first feels they need to hit out to put a big score on the board and sometimes lose wickets cheaply doing so.
ReplyDeleteI think we might well have won our final 20-20 game if we had batted second . But we lost the toss, were put in to bat and lost wickets cheaply in trying to score runs quickly. Winning the toss is a big advantage!
Anybody know why Mitch Wagstaff didn't bowl, yet Luis Reece bowled a full 10 overs and was very expensive?
ReplyDeleteReece’s first 6/7 overs were very good as he got the ball to swing, but I don’t think he’s got 10 overs in him, the last couple particularly ruined his figures. The pitch suited seam bowling so I’m not that surprised Wagstaff didn’t bowl but Whiteley should have brought himself on for a couple.
DeleteSo it was pointless playing Wagstaff when Bin Naeem would've been a more sensible option?
DeleteCouldn't agree more CB. If Mitch doesn't bowl it's seems pointless asking him to bat at 8 when he's actually an opener by trade. Could have opened instead of Reece maybe who seems to be really struggling with the bat?
DeleteI'm sure Mitch wouldn't appreciate his selection being described as pointless.
DeleteThere are at least 9 games in this competition, Bin Naeem will get opportunity, I'm sure.
At the moment you can possibly see it coming at the expense of Lamb, who sadly doesn't look like the batter we hoped we had signed. It doesn't look to me like he has got over his back issues as yet. You would think he needs some good displays in the remainder of the season to be retained.
Yeah I would agree with that. I feel a bit sorry for Wagstaff, is he an opening batter? An all rounder? A bowler? I’m not even sure at this point. He needs to go back to the seconds to figure that out and get Bin Naeem in but further up the order. I’d drop Samit down so he can come out and have a smack at the end. I don’t think he’s got batting for 30 overs in him.
DeleteWagstaff has 3 runs to his name this season. I don’t think asking him to bat at 8 is doing him any favours if he’s an opening bat. It looks a good time to take him out of the firing line.
DeleteStrangely, Matt Lamb comfortably has has the best average for us in the championship with 49.28, but most of his 345 runs came in the double century against Gloucestershire. That’s kind a of summed up his career here, mostly a struggle but there’s been the occasional big innings. With little other options I think they stick with Lamb and hope he has another one of those big innings.
Chappell's batting has been great this season. Strong case for him bat further up the order considering we've not got much to play for other than pride? He looks like he could develop into a genuine all rounder able to go in at 6 or 7. And in xurrwnt form and this format I see no reason he shouldn't spend as long as possible at the crease once the new balls been seen off.
ReplyDeleteI'd consider opening with Came and Wagstaff against Middlesex. Reece has struggled to find form in the one-day games. If Lamb still has back issues, then I'd bring in Bin Naeem.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if our recent batting collapses have something to do with our plethora of coaches? If our batters are being told different things by different coaches it's little wonder their techniques get frazzled. Presumably Chappell, as a tail ender, doesn't have coaches all over his batting technique and that's why he can come out and play by his own
ReplyDeleteinstincts. Just a thought....
I think the season could have looked different if we had signed an overseas bat. We have been found short, with the loss of du Plooy. It's probably too soon for changes, after one game, but I'd expect du pavillon to play on Saturday. Kris
ReplyDeleteIt was obvious at the start of the season that we needed an overseas batsman to replace Lexus du Plooy. Obvious to all apart from Mickey Arthur it seems.
DeleteLooks like the Derbyshire lads at the hundred have taken their current form with them. Why Wayne was chosen is beyond me, never a hundred player nowadays can't score quickly enough anymore, really poor for Manchester yesterday. And Donald when facing top quality bowling will flop as well, a duck in his first game
ReplyDeleteAnd now Whiteley has been summoned to the Hindered
DeleteRoss Whiteley been called up by Welsh Fire for the hundred. He will be a big loss for us after his batting display at Northampton. Samit Patel the new captain. More chance now for the young blood to be selected.
