So after one game as Derbyshire skipper, he will be replaced in that role by Samit Patel. The county have named 13 players in the squad to face Middlesex on Saturday, which is pretty much, with injuries and existing absentees, what they have available.
It is absolute nonsense. If we have to have this abomination of a tournament, squads should be selected ahead of the competition of sufficient size that no change can be made from one week before it starts. Surrey has lost FIFTEEN players to it, Somerset and Lancashire ten each. Leicestershire have lost six, but they still have two overseas players, as do Hampshire, who opened their bowling today with Abbott and Abbas. Meanwhile, Derbyshire won their opening game with no overseas input, although Daryn Dupavillon is back in the squad for the weekend.
So what happens if Zak Chappell gets called up next and a bowler sustains an injury? Because nothing has happened, I assume we're not going to sign an Indian superstar, like Northamptonshire and Lancashire, so it will be a case of elevating another young player from the academy
Despite our beating them the other day, I expected Northamptonshire to do well, so too Glamorgan, both largely unaffected by the other competition. Worcestershire have only lost one player, but with five regular bowlers injured, they are effectively fielding their second team attack already. Somerset will probably be in the mix, too.
Anyway, rant over, back to tomorrow and the visit of Middlesex. With Whiteley gone, I expect Yousaf Bin Naeem to play, probably in his place, while Dupavillon will probably replace Mitch Wagstaff.
I do feel sorry for Mitch. He has gone from promising second team opening bat to a lower order bat who bowls a bit of spin. Then he was elevated to bat as an opener again at Chesterfield where he was on a hiding to nothing, before again being put in to bat eight but not bowl at Northampton. There is a good cricketer in there, but some form of consistency in selection and place in the order would be beneficial for him, as it is for anyone else.
The likely Derbyshire side:
Came, Reece, Guest, Lloyd, Lamb, Naeem, Patel, Chappell, Moore, Conners, Dupavillon
Wagstaff and Potts also in squad.
Middlesex have lost the hugely influential Ryan Higgins and Leus du Plooy, as well as Helm, Holden and Eskinazi to the Crisp Competition. They still have a decent squad, but were hammered by Worcestershire in their opening game, conceding 371 before being bowled out in just 25 overs. Ethan Bamber, due to move to Warwickshire in the close season, will spearhead their attack, while former England men Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman anchor an otherwise inexperienced batting lineup.
They travel with the following squad:
Stoneman, Andersson, Bamber, Brookes, Cornwell, Bracknell, Cullen, Davies, de Caires, Fernandes, Hollman, Kaushal, Robson, White
The weather is set fair and in theory Derbyshire should have enough to win this one and make it two wins from two matches. Five from eight *should* be enough to see us make the knockouts and hopefully salvage something from what has otherwise been a dispiriting season.
Fingers crossed, eh?
Mitch Wagstaff is being badly treated by Mickey Arthur in exactly the same way Anuj Dal was treated by him two seasons ago. In the team /out the team / up the order/down the order. I went to a members meeting where MA said " I'm not sure whether Anuj is a batsman who bowls a bit or a bowler who bats a bit" An absolutely disgraceful comment to make. Eventually Anuj became a regular and produced some match winning performances either as a batsman or a bowler (sometimes both) For this competition Mitch should bat at no.6 in all the remaining games to allow him to settle into a roll. I was at Scarborough last season to witness Mitch's performance and was mightily impressed. Since then he has been shabbily treated by MA. To me that is nothing short of disgraceful but MA has previous form as mentioned above.
ReplyDeleteIt is only conjecture Steve, but how do you think Ross will be feeling? Captaincy with us, a really good first game personally and the potential for a good run in 59 over competition. Trade that to be a squad player in the abomination for Tân Cymraeg. It even sounds silly in Welsh!
ReplyDeletePresumably the money helps (does he get paid twice, or do they pay Derbyshire for his release)?
As regards Zac, the better he does for us in this, the more the others will want him for that. Stupid isn't it..
I guess Ross has mixed feelings, Dave. I don't know if he would be a regular pick, I honestly couldn't tell you who was in their squad!
DeleteIt used to be that players selected for the hundred paid 12.5% of their salary band to the county they played for. That may still be the case, but there might be people who follow it more closely than I (Which wouldn't be hard!) who may know better?
And yes, if Zak has another good game tomorrow, he could easily get called up. Which would leave us with 12 players, by my calculation...
Might need to register Alex Hughes as a player again!
Any disappointment Ross might be feeling should quickly dissipate once he's trousered that £30k. Short career, good luck to him.
DeleteThis 50 over competition is effectively a minor counties standard, which sadly for us, is quite apposite. Gone are the days when it was a showpiece final at Lords to end the season, and at which a good performance might lead to selection for an England tour.
Thanks for the figure Jasper. Reckon I might wish the 2nd X1 Metrobank trophy a fond farewell too. Fair enough to Ross, probably not too many of these sort of paydays left!
DeleteNo issue in anyone making money while they can in a short career. It is their prerogative, just as it is mine or that of anyone else to have any interest in that competition..
DeleteThe whole system and selection criteria for the hundred is farcical. Who would ever have thought just a few seasons ago that a such a situation would exist where there was no guarantee from one day to the next that a club might loose yet another front line player. In Derbyshire's case, they might eventually struggle to name a starting XI.
ReplyDeleteIt beggars belief...
Ian. S.Africa.
The end of 50 over cricket has already started. The attendances in India for the world cup were well down (it was badly run as well, probably deliberately) and this watering down of what was once a premier domestic competition only hastens this.
DeleteMeanwhile, reckon there will be a few South African, Kiwis and Aussie players getting fired up for the Canadian 20/20 starting today. Woo hoo, it'll be great...
As much as I don’t like it, I try hard not to rant about the 100, but this one has really got my back up. You’ve hit the nail on the head, surely they can pick a squad of sufficient size that they don’t need to still be poaching players at this point?
ReplyDeleteAt least I should get my wish of seeing plenty on Bin Naeem in the remainder of the competition.
I’d be inclined to give Reece a rest and let Mitch open. I was at Scarborough too last season and he looked quite a batter. The fact that he can bowl leggies is good, too. I wouldn’t play Potts tomorrow but at some point I do hope he gets a chance. Three years ago Dave Houghton was raving about him as the next big prospect, but under MA he's not kicked on at all (shades of Sam Conners!) if we don’t give these guys a chance we will never know what they can or can’t do.

The final of the 50 over competition takes place after the hundred. Therefore counties who make the final are faced with a dilemma. Do they remain loyal to those players who got the club to the final or bring in the big guns from the hundred. For example who would deny Wayne Madsen the opportunity to appear in the final yet a younger player could miss out who appeared in every game. The situation is farcical.Natwest81
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling there is some sort of rule that players will have had to have appeared earlier in the competition. It certainly applied to the Blast as Lancashire recently bringing George Dockrell in for one game with the view playing later in the knockout stages. They have called it the "Bravo Rule".
DeleteWhiteley, crisp matches or not, we're off to Derby. Another win please lads
ReplyDeleteAndy
Whisper it quietly but are we a dark horse for the RLC this season after that demolition of Middlesex?
