Lancashire 99 (Brown 5-37, Chappell 2-19, Moore 2-23, Conners 1-19)
Derbyshire 100-1 (Reece 52*, Guest 37*)
Derbyshire won by nine wickets
Three wins out of three for Derbyshire, as Samit Patel won the toss, put the visitors in to bat and then watched his excellent, four-man seam attack bowl them out in just twenty overs.
Any suggestion of undue terrors in the pitch were allayed, as Derbyshire then knocked the hundred run target off in just 20 overs themselves, for a second consecutive nine-wicket win.
They look a side now brimming with confidence, which is good to see. The return of Pat Brown saw him with career-best figures of 5-37, while there were two wickets each for Zak Chappell and the again impressive Harry Moore.
Lancashire will have hoped for early inroads in the Derbyshire chase, but their only wicket was when Came seemed to change his mind mid-stroke and guided a ball to the hands of second slip, who held it well to his left.
Thereafter Reece made a stylish half century in trademark style with three sixes, while Guest stroked the ball around as he supported well, for the second game in succession. Yousaf Bin Naeem seems to have added stability to this batting line up...perhaps a calming influence in the dressing room...
There's a lot of unhappiness among the visiting support on social media, a number of them perhaps unrealistic in what is achievable with ten men absent. They were heavily dependent on the newly-arrived Indian star Venkatesh Iyer, who played two sumptuous drives before pulling Brown to deep square leg, where he was well held by Came. It was an unnecessary shot after the loss of early wickets and thereafter the decline became terminal, Moore removing Green, the other overseas player, with a fine ball that rearranged his stumps.
It could have been worse, with a little erratic bowling seeing 20% of the total as extras, but this isn't the night to be churlish.
You can only beat what is in front of you and Derbyshire were professional once more today in a fine team effort. With Mickey Arthur given the vote of confidence by the CEO last night - a more reliable thing than its football equivalent - the plans for next season can continue to take shape.
Many more displays like this and the fan base might even become confident...
Good effort, fellas. Worcestershire are next, on Friday. Win that and we can almost smell the knock out stage.
On a day made for ice cream, Lancashire were 99 and Derbyshire - well, they were Fab.
Superb, professional performance. I expected us to win but not in such a dismissive fashion. Well done to all.
ReplyDelete‘Blimey’ !
ReplyDeleteFine result Simon
ReplyDeleteCould certainly get used to this.
ReplyDeleteLancashire have lost a lot of players, but they still had some good players, and 2 overseas out there that we didn't have and they were thoroughly thrashed.
It once again shows the importance of winning the toss and having the option of bowling first. The opposition feel under pressure to score quickly, hit out and lose cheap wickets.
ReplyDeleteThat was as good a bowling performance as I've seen from Derbyshire for a long time. Harry Moore is something special - he must be carefully managed but a serious England prospect in the making. Perhaps, a little late, things are starting to gel. OK, we're not facing full-strength opposition as is the nature of this comp, but our own stocks are depleted and yet we are winning with panache. Keep it up, guys - great to watch such a good licking (sorry) today.
ReplyDeleteIt's always special when we beat Lancs. It happens only rarely and I cannot recall such a thumping victory over them. A great start to the Metro Bank Competition. Let's hope it continues!
ReplyDeleteWell, I thought I'd go and see this new look winning team in the flesh. 50 overs a side, it can be a long day so no rush me thinks. Walking in at 60-6, I reckoned it wasn't my best decision 🤦♂️
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, it was refreshing to witness such a comprehensive victory. Pace and bounce in the pitch at Derby, what's going on?
Whisper this quietly, but our record in July is played 8 won 6. Any team would have been happy with that record. The improvement seems to have crept up quietly with hardly anyone noticing. Hope it continues, but as I have said on here before - its the hope that hurts most
ReplyDeleteChecked on the score whilst at work and had to look twice when I saw that we'd bowled Lanky out for 99.... what ?
ReplyDeleteMarvellous stuff , great numbers from Pat Brown and very pleased to see Moore and Bin Naeem getting more game time.
Keep it up fellas !
Excellent bowling performance with the added benefit of having Pat Brown back in the attack. He has proved to be ann quality recruit. Also good to see the club continuing to give Harry Moore opportunities in this competition along with Yousaf Bin Naeem, can only be good for their development.
ReplyDeleteAlso good to see more life in the pitch that must surely help the attack and make for more attractive cricket.
Three wins must give the side a great deal of confidence and the fifty over format seems to suit the squad that is presently available.
Nudger
Three wins out of three? This can't be Derbyshire.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant performance, especially from our bowling quartet. Pat Brown was brilliant. But Harry Moore, at just seventeen, is looking special.
Was always confident today, take the 2 overseas players out of the lancs team and that's a pure 2nd XI for them. Not trying to take the gloss off the campaign so far but the 3 teams we have played are the bottom 3 in the group. First real test is against Worcs on Friday and we might have Whiteley back for that too! Win that one and quarter finals will be in touching distance.
ReplyDeleteI am not saying you are wrong, but the Lancs commentator said they had 2 overseas and 5 players that play in their CC team out yesterday.
DeleteA terrific display. Brown bowls lots of wicket-taking balls so we must excuse his high run-rate. Moore reminds me of Stephen Finn and is very much one to watch. And adding Andersson for next year is an exciting move.
ReplyDeleteBailey, Bell, Bohannon and Balderson play a lot of first team cricket, while Blatherwick has had his share. With the 2 overseas players it was far from a bad team, but with ten players absent (Salt, Buttler, Livingstone, Wood, Mahmood, Jennings, Wells among them) it was far from full strength
ReplyDeleteDerbyshire had 5 players from their last cc game involved and no overseas. Lancs had 4, plus 2 overseas. I'd make Lancs favourites, if I saw those stats on paper. It was a poor show from them, no excuses. Kris
ReplyDeleteAnd a good one from us, Kris. Been a long time since we had a seam attack that hunted in a pack..they did that yesterday
DeleteGreat result yesterday there was definitely more energy/chat in the field than the recent T20. Yes Lancs were without absent players (so were we) but I am guessing Salt, Buttler, Livingstone, Wood, Mahmood don't often if ever feature in the same Lancs side.
ReplyDeleteFair point, Dale. Buttler has played for Lancs only a few more times than me...
DeleteThe bowling performance yesterday was the best as a group for many years. It must rank alongside the bowling performance against Lancashire in the 1993 Benson and Hedges final.
