Derbyshire v Middlesex Metro Bank One Day Cup game 2

Middlesex 266 (Bracknell 56, Anderson 46, Hollman 38, Dupavillon 3-47, Moore 2-39, Conners 2-44, Patel 2-49)

Derbyshire 267-1 (Came 113*, Reece 88, Guest 32*)

Derbyshire won by nine wickets

Derbyshire moved to the top of the table with an impressive, commanding performance against Middlesex today.

An excellent century by Harry Came, who was well-supported by Luis Reece in a double century opening stand, steered his side to victory with seven overs to spare.

It isn't often that I get to write on a performance so dominant, so I'm enjoying this one. There were a few aberrations in the field, three catches put down that one might have expected to be held at this level, but that should not detract from a Derbyshire display that was one of consummate professionalism.

The visitors began well, Robson looking in good touch before being dismissed, while Cracknell led a charmed life, especially against Sam Conners, who beat him regularly. He went on to a gutsy half century, but thereafter no one played an innings of sufficient impetus to put put the chase into 'danger' territory. Andersson, who rumours suggest is a winter target for Mickey Arthur, batted steadily but could never break loose from a keen bowling attack, before being bowled by one from Patel that kept very low.

I thought this was the best I have seen Sam Conners bowl this season, on a pitch that had considerably more bounce and pace then we have been used to at Derby. He deserved more wickets than he got, but played a part in a good bowling performance. Dupavillon was very lively, if a little erratic and a couple of the visiting batters looked uncomfortable against him. Meanwhile, Harry Moore again bowled with remarkable accuracy and skill for a young man of only 17, while Patel was wily with his spin. Zak Chappell was more expensive today, but seemed to be struggling with injury and at one point called for painkillers. Hopefully it is something that can be managed, because we don't have many players in reserve.

The eventual score was 266, but Derbyshire set off like a train, aided by bowling that was erratic, to say the least. Both Reece and Came were quickly into their stride and only the willing work horse Ethan Bamber was able to slow their progress. Landmarks were passed and the only surprise was when Reece missed a sweep against Hollman and was leg before for an excellent 88. This was the Reece of old, strong off his legs and powerful when driving, as always in this form a pleasure to watch.

Came progressed to his century, a well-crafted and mature innings and with assistance from Guest saw his side to an easy win with 42 deliveries to spare. His season hasn't gone as he might have wished, but he remains a player of talent and potential. I hope that he enjoys a strong finish to the summer that he can build on next year.

It was an excellent display. Cynics might say it wasn't a full Middlesex side, but it wasn't a full Derbyshire one either and you can only beat who is in front of you.

They did that with consummate ease and considerable professionalism today.

Next up is Lancashire on Wednesday and good things happen when a side gets on a roll. Five wins from eight should probably see Derbyshire to the knockout stage and that has now become three from six.

We might yet salvage something from this season. I like this Derbyshire...

  1. The only (very minor) irritation from today is not giving Bin Naeem a go when the first wicket fell. A nice little cameo at the end could have set him up nicely for the rest of the comp and banish any nerves. Although from what I hear, he isn’t the sort of character to get fazed. But like I say, very minor! A great day all round.

    1. I was thinking exactly the same thing about Bin Naeem

  2. Turning the corner or another false dawn ? I’m not allowing myself any comfort until I see more evidence.

That said, it could have all been worse …

  3. Wow! After a season of dismal failure suddenly we come up with a brilliant victory. The bowlers stuck to their task well and then Reece and Came tore apart the Middlesex attack. Bring on Lancs!

  4. Meant to say.....is this the first time we have gone into any game
with a 17 year old and an 18 year old in our ranks?

  5. We’ve bowled very well in both games so far, and could have had both teams out for less than they eventually got with better fielding. If we can keep bowling teams out we will give ourselves a chance.

Really pleased for Harry Came, I was disappointed with how quickly he was dropped in the other formats particularly the championship. Hopefully this gets him going again.

  6. It's been a joy to sit and watch that performance today, although at 150-0 part of me was still thinking 'collapse incoming'.
Harry Moore bowled ever so well, and the batting was just so good.

One very happy supporter tonight. Even the good Mrs Andy was impressed too!

    Roll on the next game

  7. Side just looked a lot more balanced today. 5 strong bowlers and batting down to 9. Agree Connors looked a lot more impressive and set the tone. I do think the docile pitches are a major reason why we have struggled in 4 day cricket for the last few years and early on this seemed a bit more lively. Tough game on Weds but hopefully we can carry on!

  8. That was something to savour after an indifferent season so far. Hopefully we can continue to turn things around and have a better second half half to the season. Pleased to see the partnership between Harry Came and Luis Reece succeeding again as it did in the latter stages last season.

The bowlers did their stuff although Zak Chappell was a tad expensive but that might be down to carrying some sort of strain. Just hope that can be managed as PF said we have few alternatives in the ranks.

Also good to see another excellent contribution from Harry Moore and it’s quite remarkable considering he is only seventeen. Would be fantastic to see him and Yousaf Bin Naeem continue to develop over the next few years in Derbyshire colours.

  9. A really good result that was built on some great bowling. What a difference a decent pitch makes...

Moore was excellent, Conners bowled so well that it reminded me why there are rumours of bigger counties still interested, hopefully the thought of more pitches like that might keep him interested in staying...

A word for Dupavillon though who bowled excellently and with real menace. He's been written off a bit but I think he showed today that on a decent surface he can make batters very uncomfortable indeed. If the plan is to keep producing pitches like that and he could carry this level on until the end of the season then I'd be tempted to take a punt on him for next season. He, Conners and a fully fit Chappell and Aitchison on a deck like that would be a serious attack. A lot of ifs hiding in that statement but feeling optimistic after that performance. May as well enjoy it whole it lasts!

  10. Mickey talks about players needing to execute their skills, and that's what they did. A magnificent performance. Our bowlers prevented Middlesex from posting a big score. It was pleasing to see seventeen-year-old Harry Moore bowl economically again and pick up a couple of wickets.

Came and Reece batted superbly, pushing singles and twos, hitting an occasional boundary, and keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Guest played a lovely cameo.

Let's make it three out of three against Lancashire on Wednesday.

I want to see Moore play the remaining Championship games too now. Looks a real quality prospect.

    1. I want to see plenty of Harry Moore over the next two months, but the concern with young fast bowlers is always an injury. You see it so often. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sports science people have some planned rest for him in the schedule.

    2. Managing his workload will be the issue. If memory serves, I think he had a stress fracture last year.

    3. Got to watch his overs, lots of youngsters got back issues by overbowling

    4. He will be limited with what he can bowl because of his age and his spells and recovery closely monitored, as others have said. Wouldn't rule it out, but not necessarily as a front line bowler, perhaps an all round option bowling 10-15 overs

  12. Our bowlers' response to a reasonably lively Derby pitch makes the policy of producing dead tracks and deadly matches totally mystifying. Encouraging to see a 17 year-old bowling promisingly. Some way to go to match Edwin Smith's 8-21 v Worcestershire at a similar age in 1951!

  13. I think we've benefited from only having 13 fit players, in a way. Would we bring back the 4 Hundred players for the knock outs, I wonder? Kris

    1. My heart says no, show faith in this who **might have** got you there. My head says they would. Remember du Plooy winning the 2nd team trophy last year?

      What would others do?

  14. Should we get there ( and it’s still a big if ) play your best team whoever that is? Derbyshire haven’t won enough trophies over the years to spurn an opportunity like this IF it happens. When you look back in 20 years time nobody will be too worried who played. Might seem harsh but it would be great to see our name on a trophy again

  15. I'm in the same boat as you on this, Steve. But given that all the teams in the quarter finals will be back to full strength, it would seem unlikely that Brown, Madsen, Whiteley and Donald would be left out.

  16. I think you have to play what you think is your best team. Individual form certainly comes into, if for example, Matt Lamb and David Lloyd continue to struggle and the runs that get us there largely come from elsewhere, the. You don't hesitate to bring Madsen & Donald in. If Bin Naeem and Moore play well, then I'm much more reluctant to drop then for Whiteley and Brown.

I will stress myself out with that one if we get there 😂
