Sunday thoughts

I enjoyed a lovely chat with a friend last night, who suggested another name that might be of interest to Derbyshire for that second overseas role.

Duane Jansen, anyone? Younger brother of South African international bowler Marco, bowls left arm around 90mph and from a height of 6 feet 8 inches. Also a very handy batter and I could see him very much an option for a discerning county before too long.

I suspect it won't be too long before he achieves international recognition and very much in his favour from a Derbyshire perspective is that he would give a different angle, as well as the steep bounce and pace.

So yes, I would add him to Pretorius and Bosch as good options for Mickey Arthur.

I don't think there will be any play to report on later and I suspect we must wait for the Glamorgan game for Derbyshire's first cricket of the summer. Conditions are simply too wet and with more rain forecast I cannot see that changing in the next 24 hours.

Enjoy your Sunday anyway!

Please note - I removed a comment last night that I hadn't read carefully before publishing. It was not appropriate and I will not publish any critical - especially unfounded - comments where the person concerned has failed to use a name.

Please remember to use a consistent name when commenting, your own preferably or a nom de plume if you must. But I will decline to post comments I feel are inappropriate

What is more remarkable is that two days of play were possible last week. Appreciate the bar would not have been quite so high re the required conditions but it looked fairy decent on the clips I saw.

  2. It’s time we stopped blaming the Hundred for all cricket’s problems. We’ve been starting the county championship season in the first week of April for years and long before the hundred was even an idea.
Indeed when we won division 2 in 2012 our first match started , on you guessed it , April 5.
More pertinently in this day and age I find it amazing that we still have no way of adequately covering the whole playing area
irrespective of how large this area is. Surely after over 100 years of cricket we should have moved on from the inadequate covers seen at some grounds including ours. With climate change, weeks like the one just gone will become more regular and cricket needs to look at long term solutions and invest now

  3. There has been some talk about the fact that just down the road at Trent Bridge cricket was being played. I don't want to enter into the discussion about this being in stark contrast to the abandonment of the game at Derby but to note that in the end Notts were soundly beaten by Essex. There was some outstanding fast bowing from Cook and Porter for Essex while our Matt Critchley scored an invaluable half century. Poor Notts. As the sergeant major in It Ain't Half Hot Mum used to say "Oh dear how sad, never mind."

  6. Yes, it was inevitable he would go somewhere, good player. Jansen or Bosch would do me now

  7. I saw the other day that one of my previous suggestions, Beyers Swanopoel is playing club cricket in Staffordshire. So you know he's nearby....

    Still think it's Stuurman though!

    1. Swanpoel has signed for Kent. Stuurman is a decent shout, to be fair, though doesn't offer much with the bat. Would prefer someone who does, as well as being a front line bowler, especially for T20
