Derbyshire v Leeds/Bradford UCCE day one

Derbyshire 256-9d (Chappell 67, Donald 62)

Leeds/Bradford UCCE 9-1

Derbyshire lead by 247 runs

If today is anything to go by, cricket at the County Ground this year will be pretty exciting and eventful.

Derbyshire had to work hard to get to a presentable first innings total and were in big trouble in the early afternoon at 117-7. Yet they recovered to post 256-9 by tea, when they declared. The turnaround came from a classy knock by Nye Donald and a bucolic and enterprising one from Zak Chappell, in which he cleared the boundary three times.

They were lent good support by Alex Thomson and by the close Chappell had removed one of the openers.

It was good to see movement for pretty much all of the day and there was further strength to the argument I made two or three weeks back that am extra batter may be useful in the early matches.

With Blair Tickner to come in, there will be a decision to make. Does Lloyd open at the expense of Came? Or does Reece drop down? Or is Thomson omitted?

It will have done them all good, after a winter indoors, to get back on 'sporting' grass that I hope continues.

The students stuck well to their task and bowled and fielded sharply. Hopefully we can match their efforts tomorrow.

  1. Nye Bevan? It would be very remarkable if he were in our lineup! Nye Donald presumably. Good to see him making runs for us anyway.

  2. I knew that was going to happen sometime soon, especially when rushing! Duly corrected, thanks CG

  3. I think personally if I was Lloyd I would put myself at 4. As we need to develop young players. The development we saw of Came in 2023 shows he’s a player is a remarkable talent. I’m
Surprised that without a ball being bowled In championship there a question? It will certainly be tough for them April opening batting compared to tracks batted in last year. We have to remember they averaged 87 and 43.

    1. I am a huge fan of Harry, but there are 11 places and 20 good cricketers. There will always be some who miss out and the HOC has to get it right.

    2. Personally would leave it as it is up top, but Tickner must play, as, in turn will the other overseas. So 2 of yesterday's team will miss out...
