Derbyshire v Gloucestershire preview

For those who are statistically minded, the 2024 summer will be the 58th season in which I have followed Derbyshire. Which makes me sound like a weird kind of stalker, truth be told.

It is also the sixteenth season in which I have written this blog. Having done a deep dive into the statistics, during that time I have written 4441 posts and there have been nearly sixteen thousand comments. I was astonished today to see that there were 60,000 views last month and already 14,000 views this month, after three days. Sometime during the first game, with a nice degree of symmetry, the blog will go past four million views.

So it is fair to say that interest in county cricket is high and I am grateful to everyone who logs in on a regular basis to see what I have to say. That followers of other counties do so is incredibly flattering, so too that cricket fans from different parts of the world get in touch.

Every one of those people, like me, will feel the excitement of a new summer. This is going to be the one, regardless of who you support. The night before the season starts, you are convinced that this is your year. Perhaps, by the time tomorrow evening comes, reality has hit and acceptance begins that maybe, just maybe, it isn't...

But let us all enjoy tonight, quite likely listening to the sound of the rain from Storm Kathleen. It looks like there will be a fair amount of rain around Derby tonight, so the likelihood of a prompt start tomorrow appears slim. Having said that, the forecast for the rest of the game isn't too bad, so we will see cricket, though whether enough to get a result is another question.

Mickey Arthur has named a squad of fourteen for the game which is as follows:

Lloyd (captain)
Came
Reece
Madsen
Guest
Lamb
Donald
Dal
Chappell
Conners
Brown
Tickner
Thomson
Morley

I think one spinner will play now,  unless the players turn up tomorrow to the sound of Mickey Arthur singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home', while pointing to the pitch with a wink. My guess would be that Brown, Morley and either Lamb or Donald miss out, but I don't know any more than you.

As for our first opponents, Gloucestershire will be skippered by Graeme van Buuren and will have Aussie Cameron Bancroft to lead their batting for the summer. Their squad:

Van Buuren, Bancroft, Shaw, Dent, Hammond, Akhter, Phillips, Bracey, Singh Dale, Middleton, Charlesworth, Price, Goodman, de Lange

Last night on Radio Derby, Mickey Arthur revealed that our second overseas player is signed and will be with us from the end of April until September. He also said that he would like our overseas players to become 'our' players, ideally returning summer after summer like in the good old days.

That being the case, I am still very much of the opinion that it will be Migael Pretorius, who has the skill set and experience to play all formats with success. I might be wrong, but he would give us depth to the batting and an extra, very good seam bowler in all formats.

For now, all eyes will be on the class of '24 and especially seeing how Blair Tickner fares. For what it is worth, I think we will do okay in four  day cricket, but I expect us to make a very good fist of both one day competitions.

Maybe that is my perennial optimism speaking. But I applaud the efforts to recruit some very good cricketers over the winter. If Mickey Arthur can get them all to produce their best form on a regular basis, I expect this to be a memorable six months.

By the end of the season, that will either come back to bite me, or I will be getting offered gigs at the end of Blackpool Pier, reading fortunes...

  1. Always enjoy reading your observations on Derbyshire and beyond. As a Yorkshire fan, I have found it helpful to learn more about other counties. Let’s hope for good weather tomorrow and some decent cricket.

Always excitement and hope this time of year. I think Derbyshire will be competitive, can see their increased depth. I just wonder if their fast bowling department maybe a bit weaker than other counties but we shall see.

    1. Thanks Greg, appreciate that. Yes, early injuries test most sides so we must keep fingers crossed

  2. Essential reading Steve. My first match was the Gillette Cup s/f v Sussex in 1969 so just the 55 years for me.

  3. Further to the stats i gave very early this morning, in an attempt cheer myself up and maybe a few Derby ccc supporters. I decided against my better jon udgement to go all the way back to the year 2000 for incora ground CC wins. I throught it would give a true perspective of where we are as a club. Is everyone ready for this well here goes 161matches 27 wins. 12 of these seasons inc 0 wins. An almost unbelievable statistic. And to make matters worse half of these seasons we played 7 or 8 fixs at the incora ground as opposed to the 6 we now play. Just a few more numbers before I depart.2011/12 seasons are the only 2 years out of 23 where we registered 4 incora ground wins. This is poor in the extreme.Im hopeless at maths maybe some kind person can work the win percentage out. I'm worn out Counting having spent 30 mins moving my finger up and down columns. What chances of Cricket tommorrow.? As I look out my kitchen window now it's absolutely belting down with rain What with these extremely poor historical stats and the rain, I can't think of a single reason to go on.Hang on yes I can the 10 hotels I've already booked to see every single home and away fixture this season bar 2.
and I'm currently working on those
but they may be a bridge to far. It's surprising difficulty to organise and as actually taken me by surprise.

  4. Been following with interest as ever PF, very entertaining pre season postings.

Think Derbyshire should do well this season if your bowlers hit form, and don't think Yorks are the faves many think, but Sussex look good if Robinson plays a bit.

Used to enjoy an away day and a tacked on trip to the peaks so hopefully you can get promotion soon.

Can't see past Surrey in div1 sadly and Essex fortunes rest on the 3 bowlers staying fit as the backups are a drastic step down and Dean Elgar settling in.

I wonder if the lancs spinner is recalled you may be look at Aaron nijar who we released as a left arm option. Not a bad player but think more left arm version ofThomson so not really good enough to improve you and probably better off trying to loan Hartley or Bashir (not that they really did much in the CC to evidence there exalted current positions IMO)

    Any way good luck.

  5. It looks like a damp start, but wish everyone at the club good season. Let's hope for that elusive home CC win, or more, and a good showing across the formats.

Huge respect to Neil Godrich and his team, and ground staff throughout all the leagues for the effort they've already had to put in and fingers crossed for brighter skies and drying winds.

Enjoy the cricket, wherever you are!

  6. As Mickey begins season three of his Derbyshire project, he has now assembled the squad he wants. Our batting has a lot of firepower and we can bat deep. Barring injuries, our stable of bowlers should cause problems for opponents. I also think we'll do well in the CCC. But I genuinely believe we can go all the way in the T20.

Congratulations on all your achievements with your blog, it is always a brilliant read.

I have renewed my membership and I‘m looking forward to a very successful season and hoping they copy the Spireites and get promotion! I think MA has made some great signings and well done to the Ian Morgan and the Executive Team for another profit.

Also great news again about the profit at Derbyshire.

Here is to promotion and looking forward to reading your blog throughout the season.

How is it that Notts can get started in their home game 10 miles down the road but we look like not getting a ball bowled in anger?

    1. International ground with different level drainage and funding to put it in place. We have to be realistic and the volume of rain has been crazy. So too is starting the season so early, but that's another story!

    1. Given the recent weather and that coming, maybe just wait until things change for the better? If there's nothing to say, why would they put anything out? You have access to weather reports/ radar too. It's really not 'shocking' at all.

  10. Temperature in Derby 16 degrees this afternoon which might dry the outfield but more rain tomorrow so looks like game might be abandoned without a ball bowled.

  11. Only six home games this season and it's looking likely that the first one will be ruined by the weather if your primary interest is the first class game it's becoming difficult to justify buying a membership, the ECB/Sky appear to be determined to destroy first class cricket in England

    1. Derbyshire membership would have allowed you to watch Nottinghamshire over the last four days (and includes reciprocal agreements with other local counties) so purely from a value for money perspective for watching the first class game, I would say it's very good.
