There's a welcome return for Luis Reece to the Derbyshire ranks tomorrow, as Derbyshire play Middlesex at Lord's in their penultimate game of the summer.
A fourteen man squad has been announced and I guess the final eleven will depend on whether Reece is cleared to bowl or not. Based on recent performances Anuj Dal and Daryn Smit will be two to miss out, with, again on form, Gary Wilson the other. The squad in full:
1. Billy Godleman
27. Tom Lace
10. Luis Reece
77. Wayne Madsen
18. Alex Hughes
14. Gary Wilson
20. Matt Critchley16. Harvey Hosein
65. Anuj Dal
11. Daryn Smit
28. Tony Palladino
7. Hardus Viljoen
69. Lockie Ferguson
41. Ravi Rampaul
Middlesex has named a 15-man squad that is a mix of youth and experience. They welcome Tim Murtagh and James Harris back from injury, while Martin Andersson, recently on loan with us, may well play against us tomorrow.
Their squad: Malan, Andersson, Bamber, Eskinazi, Fuller, Gubbins, Harris, Holden, Morgan, Murtagh, Rayner, Robson, Scott, Stirling, White.
Can we do three in a row?
Why not? There's a talented squad in the Derbyshire ranks and they will be full of confidence.
Should be a good game, before next week's season finale at Derby.
Really pleased to see Luis Reece back involved, even if we are at the borderline pointless time of the season.
ReplyDeleteHalf expected Lace to be left out at Middlesex's insistence but I guess there's no better way of taking a look at him. It would be good to see him turn a 40 into a 50 or something bigger but not if it means they decide to keep him next season.
I'm surprised to see Reece back in the squad. With the seconds starting a game tomorrow, I thought he might have been given a run out there instead, with a possible return for the final home championship match. If he plays tomorrow, he'll be coming into the side with no match practice, which seems a challenge to him and a risk to the team. However, I can't see the point of including him in the squad unless he's going to play, but I'd be surprised if he does much bowling.
ReplyDeleteI'm also surprised, and a little baffled, by the reappearance of Smit in the squad. I questioned last night (which comment seems to have disappeared, by the way) whether Hosein's keeping was impeded by a hand injury during the Northants match, so I'm not surprised that some thought is being given to covering for his keeping. But with Wilson in the squad and able to cover, I don't understand the inclusion of Smit.
Unless weather intervenes or the pitch is very different from the last two matches at Lords, a result looks certain and it's difficult to see it going much into the third day, with only one innings out if the last 8 going over 200. In a probably low scoring match and bowlers who are unfamiliar with the slope, the deciding factor here could be whether Ferguson and Viljoen have their radars locked on.
I'm curious why Andersson's stay with us was so brief , was that down to us or Middlesex ?
