Derbyshire 251 and 171
Glamorgan 121 and 132 (Palladino 4-52, Andersson 4-25, Ferguson 2-25)
Derbyshire won by 169 runs
In an ending that could not have been bettered to a day that could have been script-written, Tony Palladino took the last wicket of the match, to end up with ten in a game for the first time.
It was a superb exhibition of class seam bowling. I watched all of today's play and, like all the best exponents of the art, was impressed by his control over the ball, seemingly having it on a piece of string as he jagged it this way and that, according to his will.
That is forty wickets in four-day cricket this summer and it is inconceivable that he won't be offered another deal for 2019. With question marks over much of the rest of the attack, his presence next summer gives us someone to rely on, a player who lends control and penetration in equal measure.
He's a class act and it was apposite that the final wicket came courtesy of a catch from Lockie Ferguson, also impressive today. His pace never dropped and some of his bouncers were searingly quick. The yorkers were equally brisk and the delivery that removed Chris Cooke's off stump was classic fast bowling, forcing the batsman back with several short balls then ripping out the timber with a fast and full pitched delivery.
Completing a pleasing triumvirate, Martin Andersson took the other four wickets for just 25 runs on his birthday, which completed a pretty handy debut. I liked what I saw of him and after some thought came to the conclusion that there was a touch of Jonathan Clare about his action. The run up is nothing special, but there is plenty of strength in the shoulders and he has a quicker ball and decent bouncer.
All in all there was little to dislike in this display. Special mention too for Harvey Hosein, who I thought kept pretty well today, on a wicket where some balls flew and others barely bounced at all. He led a good fielding display in which the catches were held, not always the case in recent seasons.
As I said last night, if we could replicate such pitches all summer long, we could turn the the 3aaa County Ground into fortress Derby.
We've not done that since the halcyon playing days of Sir Kim Barnett.
That home hoodoo is well and truly gone now.
Yes a good all round performance in the field today PF however with the exception of Cooke and Bull, the Glamorgan batting was really poor. The next two games will provide greater examinations. I heard someone behind me saying that Derbyshire are capable of winning all three remaining games - I'm a bit sceptical.
ReplyDeleteBig positive today was the bowling of Andersson (and we already knew about Palladino's talents). He did benefit from poor shots but to take his first first class wicket - and then another three, was excellent. Whether we should seek to engage him next season is maybe another question - I'm not convinced he gives us anything different to what we've got bearing in mind we'll have Reece back next season to bowl his medium pace. Lace is worth keeping maybe on a season loan if needs be as opener - also impressed with his fielding today.
Brilliant performance from the start really even at 3 and 5 down on the first day the pitch combined with Glamorgans awful form never had the game in doubt really. It was nice to see us not do a Derbyshire and throw it away. Never did we look in danger really. 10/10 for TP what a player. I said last week hes just so reliable will always get you 2/40 or alike on a pitch where it favors the batsmen but this week was his chance to fill his boots and wow he did. Only slight disappointment for me is no Dal. I think he deserved his chance but it will be hard for him to get in now off the back of this as Hughes and Andersson both did well. Critchley is a must as our only spin option really. Anyway, well done lads and TP with his first 10 for something i was surprised he had never done, seemingly done 9 a few times so this was great for him. Chance to finish the season strongly now and have some momentum for next year. I really do hope Lace and Andersson are options to sign as otherwise I just think what the heck are we doing. Which makes me wonder actually and thinking out loud I assume the loanees will be able to play against their parent club? If not Dal does come into the equation.
ReplyDeleteA good win today and pleasing to see contributions from different people, Billy, Hughes, hosein and the bowlers, particularly Palladino. I disagree with you PF regarding a 1 year contract for him, I believe we should secure his services on a 3 year contract as player/coach, I believe that handled correctly he could play for 3 more years, and his knowledge of bowling would be immense to pass on to the other bowlers, a good communicator and a magnificent team man. Winning helps in team spirit, but it was encouraging to see everyone celebrating each others success, a far cry from early season. Early days but Andersson looked a good cricketer, smooth uncomplicated run up with a bit of nip, and composed when taking the catches, it would be good to see how he fairs in the remaining matches, and see what transpires in future contracts.
