Weekend thoughts

Lancashire next, for unbeaten Derbyshire in the one-day cup and I watched them lose an excellent game of cricket at Blackpool today.

Not that I was beside the seaside (beside the sea) but in my armchair, in front of an excellent stream and with commentators who concentrated on the cricket and knew their stuff.

Kent won by five runs in a game that swung both ways as it progressed. The winning margin was five runs and of course it was former red rose star Matt Parkinson who won it with four wickets, including the last man, Ollie Sutton. He could barely move with a side strain sustained on the third ball he bowled, having already taken a wicket.

Truth be told, Lancashire wouldn't have got close, had it not been for an outstanding unbeaten century by their captain, Keaton Jennings. He certainly looks like the key wicket on Wednesday, because while there are other talented batters in the side (Bohannon and Balderson the main ones) their side will not be close to the one that has beaten us in the T20 this year.

Australian overseas star Chris Green played today and bowled well, but he may or may not be available for the game against us.

I see this as a winnable game for Derbyshire and if we can go to 3/0 there is a very good chance of our progression to the knockout stage.

Assuming there are no injuries from the game against Middlesex, I would go with the same team. Realistically, there are only two players outside of it and on current form the strongest eleven took the field.

In other news, I just wonder if Mickey Arthur might go back to assess the viability of a return for Shan Masood next year. It seems to me that the wolves are circling at Headingley, with rumours that Ottis Gibson will be replaced by Darren Lehmann at the end of the season. Colin Graves is back in charge and the likelihood is he will want his own man at the helm.

There has never been the love affair with supporters that Masood enjoyed at Derby and I don't think his continually shifting in the batting order has helped his own consistency. Some of the comments from 'supporters' have been uncalled for and I think it would be worth a polite enquiry, at least.

I wouldn't expect him to necessarily replicate his stunning form of two summers ago, because he was in prime nick at a time when pitches were roads. Equally, given the volatility of selection in Pakistan, I wouldn't expect him to remain in the international thinking overly long, either.

Perhaps securing his services might see Derbyshire sorted for a batter the others could play around for a few years.

Thoughts?

  1. Get him back !! in other news David Griffin was asked how Anuj Dal was doing. His reply was to wait for the Members meeting tomorrow. Sounds ominous and typically Derbyshire. Hoping Anuj is ok and wish him well .

  2. Shan Masood fitted in well at Derbyshire, as did du Plooy. It's rare that anyone comes away from Derbyshire saying they have had a bad time. They usually move for career reasons, or money. I'd have him back. Kris

  3. Good shout on Masood, think that would be a great move for all parties, clearly loved his time here, and made us a better team and obviously has a strong bond with MA (if he's still here next year).

Regarding the Lancs game, we may also have Pat Brown back for the game, he was only signed as a temporary replacement for the first 2 hundred games. If he's not selected for the Superchargers on Tuesday he'll almost certainly be here playing on Wednesday. It really is a great chance to beat a very weakened Lancs. Chris Green was apparently heading back to Australia after his one-and-done hundred appearance but he played for lancs today so who knows what's going on there .

I belive the rule in the hundred this year is that if a player is not selected for 2 straight games they are eligible to go back and play for their county. Whiteley wasn't selected for Welsh Fire tonight and if he misses out their next game on Thursday he will be allowed to play for us on Friday against Worcs. Worth noting both Donald and Madsen have had bad starts with their crisps teams so far and may end up being fall guys, so could be back sooner than expected to boost our quarter final push!!

  4. We know we're not a fashionable county, not do we pay the most. So we rightly need to compete on how we support each player individually as a playing group, club, supporters etc.

I suspect Shan now understands it's not always just about the cash, and if the UK is where he wants to base himself over the next few years - coming back would make sense for both Derbyshire and him. I'd happily take him back (as I would du Plooy)

  5. Yes, I'd also vote for Masood returning. He's class. Regarding Lancashire, we can beat them.

  6. Sometimes a county suits a players style ,and persona and I’m not sure Shan is a natural fit for Yorkshire , a reluctant captain in a County with high expectations. I’d welcome him back tomorrow….

  7. I'd love to see Shan Masood back in our ranks. When I saw him in 2022 his class and his timing was miles away from anyone else on the pitch. And his mere presence in our team seemed to lift everyone around him.

  8. New signing to be announced tomorrow. I don't think it's Shan. Next season maybe ? Hopefully.

  9. Would love to see Shan back so hope we test out the possibility if there is even a sniff of it. Says more about the Yorkies than Shan if there has been some negativity around
