Durham 410-8 (Robinson 114, Carse 77*, Coughlin 52 Aitchison 3-111)
v Derbyshire
What I did see confirmed the Derbyshire bowling attack has yet to really hit its stride this year. When most of them go for four or five an over it would be hard to imagine them bowling especially well. The exception appeared to be Sam Conners, but Brooke Guest earned his money today, having to make some acrobatic stops.
The fields set seemed rather to be those for an attack struggling with line and length. Having got the home side's big guns out, Derbyshire were frustrated by a fine century from Robinson and healthy hitting down the order. It looked a decent track for batting and we must hope that Derbyshire reply in kind when their turn comes tomorrow.
The highlight of the day was a superb catch at second slip by Haider Ali to dismiss Jones, but the bowling was too erratic for comfort.
The home side will be happy with their efforts. For Derbyshire, there still appears much to do on the bowling front.
I was surprised today that Thomson didn’t get the opportunity after 5 wickets 2nd eleven. I think Watt a quality one day player but not red ball player. I haven’t seen enough to convince me about red ball.
ReplyDeleteI would be tempted to look in loan market. I would also look to see if could get overseas from May to August as can’t see Lakmal coping with workload. It sound drastic but not if we not careful we be playing for pride instead any promotion what looks so far off. Big changers need on bowling front
Fully agree
DeleteOur bowlers are conceding an alarming number of runs in first innings: 473 against Worcestershire, 451 against Leicestershire, and just over 400 today, which may become 450 or above tomorrow. Is this to do with the change in CC bowling points? Or is it poor bowling? I don't know. What I do know is that our bowlers, as a unit, look quite ordinary.
ReplyDeleteThis bowling is utter garbage, and how is it suddenly going to get a whole lot better? Big problems all ready three games in, and all this early season optimism is going down the pan pretty quickly
ReplyDeleteThe bowling as a unit seems to lack rhythm. Even Chappell, a shining light so far, was erratic yesterday. Conners looks to be coming back, but Aitchison's real strength is his metronomic line and length, which isn't there yet.
DeleteIt will come, but the poor form and absence of the leader of the attack has been a frustration. And for any hope of promotion, they need to sort it quickly.
But they are NOT garbage. And have proved that before this season
I watched a fair bit on the live stream and the control of the bowlers was not consistent. It will be interesting to see Potts and Carse ( both England pedigree ) bowl by way of comparison .Based on the events thus far over 2 seasons I’d shake hands with Lakmal and look to replace asap. Overseas signings need to perform and show clear ROI ( e.g Abbas ,Roach ) . We need 20 wickets to win cricket games hence my view .
DeleteI think the problem with the bowling is we seem to be behind as with the number of pre-season games that were cancelled due to wet outfields mean they have not found their rhythm yet.
ReplyDeleteI think on day one Aitchison's second spell after he changed ends was the best spell and also produced a great ball to remove Lees.
Found the decision to give Thomson a long spell in the 2nds in a game where Watt also played to then select Watt in this game strange. If Watt was the planned selection for this game surely he needed a long spell to get into rhythm.
Though commentators did hint at one point that Watt was a late selection when they saw Parkinson was playing for Durham and thought Durham must know their conditions better so may have been considering an all seam attack again.
I think a condition of Parkinson's loan was that he played, regardless of conditions. He is an international player, after all.
DeleteI agree that Watt should have had the longer bowl were he in line for selection. But he may have felt it was coming out ok. And we do have to give the Durham batters credit for taking the attack to Derbyshire.
It will come right, it is just taking longer than we might have hoped.
The bowling of Dal sorely missed here. Also give Wayne a couple of overs occasionally. I'm afraid Lackmal is not the man to lead the attack and we definitely do need to use the loan market again. This season is going from bad to worse almost before it starts. Incredibly bad planning again.
ReplyDeleteAre Durham bowling on the same pitch as Derbyshire bowled on earlier?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it was as good for batting as our bowlers made it look, nor as bad now. Just a very poor display all round. Worrying..
ReplyDeleteMicky Arthur prophesied that we would not lose another Championship game this season. Let's see how that pans out.
ReplyDeleteI watched Durhams innings on and off yesterday and thought that there was a bit of something in the pitch for anyone able to hit a consistent line and length. Unfortunately we bowled 1 or 2 bad balls an over so didn't exert any pressure. At 6 down their attack is showing exactly that.
ReplyDeleteIt’s hard to credit this. Favourites for Division champions shattered in the first 7.5 days of cricket. Already out of contention in this match. Double ducks from the openers. Lame excuses about pre season weather when all teams were affected. Arthur distracted ?
ReplyDeleteIt's an absolute car crash at Derbyshire so far, looking like we'll be collecting that wooden spoon come September
ReplyDeleteDisastrous! Thank goodness for the last wicket stand. Well done Reece and Conners. Once again I agree with you Chrsterfield Blue.
ReplyDeleteI hope Micky is not trying to do too much.two high profile jobs, especially as he has upgraded from consultant.surely not an escape route!
