Derbyshire bat through the day

It was perhaps not with the elan that Mickey Arthur wanted, but Derbyshire made 217-9 today against Lancashire.

The batting fell apart in the morning against, let's not forget, a good division one attack. A few got in and got out again, but Mattie Mckiernan made a nice 49 and Anuj Dal looked composed before being bowled by a quicker ball. Alex Hughes and Alex Thomson both had useful time in the middle, while Madsen and Du Plooy played some nice shots in their time out there.

At the end of the day, Harry Came looked in decent nick, despite his early departure in the morning, while the skipper got some valuable time in the middle too.

Things to work on, for sure, but no need for people to put some of the silly comments seen on Twitter earlier

We move on from here.

  1. Yes, a moderate start but promise there. The injury to Ben Aitchison is a concern; with Reece and Cohen still in recovery and Melton restricted by overseas status the available fast- bowling contingent is halved. Perhaps an early dip into the loan market?

    1. I don't get the impression Mickey will do so without due cause. With Lakmal, Conners, Scrimshaw and Potts there is a decent seam attack to start.

Rather depends on the injury prognosis and time out. But yes, there are options out there if required. A couple may have been playing yesterday...

  2. Season’s over. Drop them all. Only kidding.

My observations of the game were on day one as in your post that bowling looked rusty in morning session with Wells and Jennings looking in little trouble but improved as the day went on. Sam Conners looked the pick of the seamers followed by George Scrimshaw. Pity Ben Aitchison had an injury as I have got the impression he has impressed Micky since his arrival. Hopefully Mikey Cohen will be fit soon as he can add variety to the attack especially as Reece will likely do less bowling this season.

Day Two gave a few clues to the proposed batting line up with Madsen at 4 and Du Plooy at 5. To get the best out of them we will need top 3 to survfve the new ball which hopefully with Shan Masood and possibly Luis Reece at 3 this should improve.

It will be interesting to see how we get spin into the team this season as Alex Thomson looked a ideal bowler for a first innings in keeping an end tight but seemed unlikely he would bowl a side to victory on a last day so we may need to find room for Mattie McKiernan who would likely be more effective in the second innings of a match.

Looking forward to the next couple of pre-season games with Notts and Oxford UCCE to see how the line up develops ahead of the trip to Lord’s for opening fixture.

  3. Another poor batting performance yesterday (Tuesday) I know these are only friendliness but the signs aren't looking very good so far

  4. Derbyshire should keep their eye out on Northants Adam Rossington as a potential keeper.
He just lost the captaincy and is "unavailable for selection", they also signed McManus from Hants.

Could be in for a move.?

  5. Rossington is a fairly big lad, not sure how well he'd fit in with Arthur's demands for peak fitness. Good batter though and decent keeper.

    1. I agree with Hamez. Good player, but Northants hasn't been home to 'athletes' (Cobb and Levi other examples) and I don't think he would fit the requisite fitness levels
