Seconds lose to Nottinghamshire

Derbyshire Second XI lost by 33 runs to Nottinghamshire in a fifty-over friendly at Lady Bay today.

The home side opted to bat and there were contributions down the order, headed by Freddie McCann, with 81. Trialist Josh Croom, from Wiltshire, took 4-65 and came back well after some early punishment from Ben Martindale and McCann. There were also two wickets each for Matt Stewart and Jack Morley, although 28 extras was unnecessarily generous, as the hosts racked up an all out total of 321.

In reply, Derbyshire were all out for 288. Neither of the most experienced batters, Nye Donald and Ross Whiteley, got going and scored only 13 between them. A partnership of 109 for the third wicket between Amrit Basra (54) and Mitch Wagstaff (106) put Derbyshire ahead of the required rate at 171-2 in the 22nd over, but afterwards only Joe Hawkins (30) and Croom (21*) got going, in a side with a fairly lengthy tail.

The two sides start a three-day friendly on the same ground, starting on Wednesday. Certainly both Wagstaff and Basra will feel happy with their form at this early stage of the summer.

Surely wagstaffe deserves a first team game very soon. I think it’s nice having a settled side but you can go to far. You notice all other counties make a few more changers then Derbyshire seem to. You can only have promising young players for so long sitting in the 2nd team. With Abbas likely now to miss a number of matches you can see a ready made excuse for the Mickey Arthur project to be put on hold again for another drifting season. I feel it would be good to let a few players know there is competition for a place in the team sooner then later

    1. So who do you drop for Wagstaffe Ian ? Came Jewell Montgomery or Reece ? And there is Wayne to come back too. To get in this first team you will need to be scoring regular heavy runs in the 2nds alongside someone having a poor run in the 1st team. It’s a bit early for that after just 4 innings.

  2. Do we have any update on Harry Moore? I was somewhat surprised not to see him involved in this match.

Reviewing the scorecard, there were a number of encouraging individual performances, which is certainly positive. More broadly, I believe that while it is important to maintain a settled red-ball side, there should also be a continued focus on developing players through the One-Day Cup and also T20 format. I hope the likes Hawkins and Basra get more game time and we see them in Blast team.

    1. There was an article in The Cricketer in February that said Mickey hoped to have him available. It also said that he was still feeling pain when he bowled and maybe they are just being careful.

Mickey rightly said that as a bowler you don't often work without pain.. being patient is probably the way forward. Just as they have been with Ben and are now reaping the rewards
