Lancashire 351 and 160 (Harris 66, Abbas 3-32, Aitchison 3-38, Chappell 3-43)
Derbyshire 374 and 108 (Came 30, Anderson 4-18)
Lancashire won by 29 runs
They should have won this match. 138 to win in two and a half sessions should have been within their compass, even allowing for batting conditions that had deteriorated from the early part of the game.
What was needed was for someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck, or to show the requisite technique, as Marcus Harris did twice for Lancashire.
It didn't happen and in the face of some good Lancashire bowling - and some overly enthusiastic appealing at times - the batting folded.
Harry Came resisted for a while, but his three colleagues in the top order perished to strokes that they will want to forget. It wasn't easy and there was, throughout the day, plenty of lateral movement, but you surely have to fancy your chances chasing such a small total.
Of course, this is Derbyshire and we have all seen similar capitulations on a regular basis in the past. There was a time when any total approaching 200 in the final innings would have been considerably beyond our compass. Perhaps that is the frustration today, that I thought - or hoped - that this side was made of sterner stuff.
It all undid a very good effort in the morning session, when Ben Aitchison appeared to have the ball on a piece of elastic, zipping it around to fine effect. Lancashire added only thirteen to their overnight total and as the ball moved both ways it was clear that the run chase would be far from easy.
A cover drive from Jewell suggested that he might at last come to terms with the Lancashire attack, but a tame clip to mid-wicket was the start of the rot. Montgomery didn't need to play the expansive drive that got him out, especially in such conditions, while Guest will be disappointed with a similar, careless stroke.
Came and Andersson saw it through to lunch and a flurry of boundaries and extras afterwards suggested that the worst had passed. Yet after 90 minutes of resistance, Harry pushed at one that again could have been left and was caught at slip. When Andersson followed soon afterwards, despite having looked more comfortable than anyone, the writing was on the wall.
I started to write this blog at that point and my wife asked why, as they were still playing. 'Because I have seen this film before', was my reply, though I take no pleasure at all in saying so.
Dal didn't last long and there wasn't enough batting left. Reece played a nice straight drive for four, but perished, playing across the line, to the next, leaving that wall writing both emboldened and capitalised.
While Aitchison hit three quick boundaries, taking the score over the hundred mark, he too didn't last long and there was no expectation that a combination of Bashir and Abbas would stay with Chappell long enough for Derbyshire to cross the finish line. The end, a run out after Chappell ran and Abbas didn't, summed up the afternoon. There will be a chastened return to Derby later today. All the hard work had been done over three days, but then they blew it, in 35 overs.
Lancashire's star players won them this game. Without Harris (125 and 66) it wouldn't have been close, while Jimmy Anderson always seemed likely to be the difference between the sides and his peerless 4-18 ensured that there was to be no fairy tale ending. The absent Madsen might have made a difference, but Lancashire were just too good for Derbyshire today, after we slugged it out manfully for 95% of the game.
The season didn't end today and there will be opportunities against lesser sides for Derbyshire to bounce back.
But this was an opportunity missed.
It will hurt everyone involved, just as much as it hurts supporters right now.
Wow, you couldn't make that up you really couldn't. Poor from Derbyshire really poor to not reach 130 runs to see out the match. I feared Anderson in this game and it was proven right, a proper class act still at 37 years of age. A really damaging defeat this and it's back to the drawing board and Wayne's return can't come quickly enough
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't make it any better, CB, but he will be 44 in July...
DeleteWow, that has truly amazed me Steve
DeleteThe team will never have a better opportunity to win there. That was frankly a pathetic run chase. Could be huge at the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteSo disappointing , had to step away from the coverage at lunch for work demands and whilst four down was a worry I did hope that we had the determination and the technique to get over the line.
ReplyDeleteSo disappointed to check in again and find we lost. This was such an opportunity to lay down a marker as to the kind of team we aspire to be, beating one of the big fish in Div 2 on their turf.
This was a great opportunity and we were not able to take it
That was very deflating. I think we matched Lancashire for 2.5 days and at 11-30 today were clear favourites. This squad will have to learn from this as it was lost in half a session .Get to 30-0 at lunch and the game is in our control but shot selection proved otherwise .Time to reflect as no game next week and hopefully Coach and Captain back in the fold .
ReplyDeleteIMO too many bits and pieces players in the team if Luis Reece is unable to bowl he should open with H Came drop Jewell down to either three or four, drop one of the all rounders probably Dal and play an extra batsman if Madsen is still unavailable possibly N Wagstaff this would give the team a better balance
ReplyDeleteA dreadful batting display, apart from Came. Some of the individual performances under pressure we have seen before, & to me show where we need to improve the team if we are to really challenge. Yes nothing is decided in April but I seriously doubt the teams mental strength to bounce back from this. I hope that I am wrong.

Ive lost count over the last few decades how many times Derbyshire have turned a position of being strong favourites, into defeat or a extremely unlikely draw. John
ReplyDeleteWell we shot ourselves in the foot again and how many times have we said that over the years!138 would be straightforward for most teams but for us it was a mountain to climb. What a chance to put a marker down and we failed miserably. As Peakfan says its early days but this will hurt team morale that's for sure.Topspinner
ReplyDeleteThe game was reminiscent of last season, where opportunities to secure victories were within reach but ultimately not taken. We saw similar situations at Glamorgan and Gloucestershire. The issue is not a lack of ability; rather, it is whether we truly believe in our capabilities and are prepared to back ourselves in key moments.
ReplyDeleteI had concerns about Jewell prior to his arrival, given his poor form, and there remains a risk that it could be a long summer for him if he is unable to turn things around quickly. On a more positive note, the bowling unit has preformed well again. It will be excellent time for Madsen to return and provide leadership to the side and bring bit more steel to the batting line up.
It's a pity one of our batsman wasn't ill (I think that's the term other counties are using) as it was calling out for a Nye Donald 30 off 20 balls type of innings today.
ReplyDeleteAfter getting into such a strong position, contriving to lose this game was dreadful and shows that Derbyshire are maybe not as good as they or we think they are this season. I fear this defeat could have a long lasting effect on the team. Another false dawn?
ReplyDeleteMichael
Lancs fan here.
ReplyDeleteCounty cricket is harsh, I felt you were comfortably the better side for 3 days and then we go and do that, but that's the nature of the beast, one session can turn the whole match.
Almost our positives are in the attack - Stanley looks a player, Jimmy Anderson's skill and desire remain intact, Coughlin dragged us back into the match with bat and ball and has a level of grit we've often lacked.
I hope this match doesn't make our team think it's better than it is, and yours doesn't feel it's worse than it is. It was a high class bowling display today and we had an all-time great bowling at your tail.
I feel you have a better batting unit than we do (we have too many weak links), our bowling unit is better (it's definitely first division standard when Anderson is fit) but we also don't know our best side and Coughlin and Stanley performing this round hasn't made that easier!
Feel we've got away with this one, and it's a concern that for all our great production line, some of the best Lancs academy graduates on display, Reece, Guest and Aitchison, were playing for you. Good luck for the rest of the season and hope that today doesn't get a quality Derbyshire side down.
Thanks, Lancs fan. I have enjoyed your considered comments here. I think we played the name and situation today and not just the balls on their merits.
DeleteHopefully we put it right at Chesterfield - Jimmy not playing might help!
Yes, exactly that, as we showed yesterday this is a good Lancs side on paper but it has a soft underbelly and you exploited that for much of the match. Your lads have learned a lesson to play the game as it stands and not the names, in his brief batting cameo I felt Ben Aitchison got that but too few of his colleagues did.
DeleteWould also say that if you'd had Wayne Madsen, you'd have chased that total with 2 or three down.
Anyway, roll on Chesterfield, I have every intention of making a day or two there, it's a splendid ground.
As others have remarked, we've seen this kind of poor batting so many times over the years. I agree with you, Steve. Someone should have got the game by the scruff of the neck. But our batsmen crumbled like a piece of Lancashire cheese. Credit to Lancs when with just 138 to defend, the odds were stacked against them, even with Sir Jimmy leading the attack. The manner of this batting display has put a dampener on the start to the season.
DeleteDownthewicket
Well that was a reality check! Think the only saving grace is that this Lancs bowling attack (particularly Jimmy, who's far too good for CC Div 2 and was definitely jettisoned far too early by England) will do that to a lot of teams this season. Ifs and buts but may be if our own senior player was in the middle order he may have marshalled the chase? Got to say well done to the home side though. Onwards and upwards.
ReplyDeleteWell we could have won the first game and should have won today but failed on both counts. Time for a reality check and hopefully an end to people “ announcing promotion “ and other such over optimistic statements about how good we supposedly are! This Derbyshire team and many others before are “ not used to winning “ and therefore struggle when the “ pressure “ and the smell of victory is in sight. Too many times we fold like a pack of cards but today’s weak effort certainly surpasses most in the last 20 years. Yes the pitch was a little difficult and of course JA is a great bowler but play him out and score off the others who are very average. But to lose 6 wickets to the others is very poor with some of the shot selection lamentable. It’s all very well the middle order scoring runs at 150-1 but coming in under pressure they are all batting one place too high.
ReplyDeleteI even saw comments elsewhere that Madsen might not get straight back in. 😂🤔
We don’t need 6 seamers and three all rounders. Madsen walks back in at number 4 and the others all go down one position with one getting dropped.
I feel gutted tonight but sadly not over surprised.
Paul
An excellent summation, Steve, as always.
ReplyDeleteI know it's only the second game, and of course, there are lots of points left to play for, but any realistic chance of promotion disappeared today, in my opinion. Durham will occupy one of the promotion spots, and we have no realistic chance of securing the other.
We were unable to force victory in the first game, even after enforcing the follow-on. Here, we were able to force defeat after dominating for the best part of 3.5 days. Credit has to be given to Lancashire, but we were the architects of our own downfall here.
It was a collectively poor batting performance, and it would be wrong to pick out any individuals (and quite rightly Steve wouldn't allow it) but if some of our batters can't cope with some ridiculous appealing, then they need to learn, and quickly.
I read somewhere a comment that perhaps we could cope without Wayne afterall. Well, think again. How we missed his class, and calming influence today.
Back to the drawing board lads....
Lancs fan here: FWIW I don't like how we appeal for everything. We're not Hampshire (the worst on the circuit for it in my view, but not by much). Unfortunately, as a tactic it can be effective.
DeleteThanks for mentioning that. I found the constant appealing really irritating. Some of them were not even close and when you have square leg appealing for lbw, it is really quite pathetic
DeleteSingh and Jones were especially bad and it was clearly an attempt to intimidate. I'm not a fan...
At one point their keeper was claiming a catch when there was clear daylight between bat and ball, jumping up and down like a 3 year old throwing a tantrum. Embarrassing. Good to see lancsfan calling it out.
DeleteVery disappointing and I fear this will come back to bite us.
ReplyDeleteSmart money will be on Durham to go up and we've fancied ourselves as in the hunt with Lancs to join them. To be set just 130 odd away from home and blow it...
An away win would have been vital given the Derby deck is just as dead as usual and won't be conducive to more than draws. Last season we drew plenty and didn't win enough and I fear for the same now we've blown this early opportunity.
I thought it was game over when Reece was given LBW, to one that seems to pitch outside leg stump. The problem is that neither Abbas or Bashir can really bat. What was needed was a steady old head like Madsen, or a quick 50 from a Donald. Our players ended up not knowing what to do. We played better as a team, but Lancs had an outstanding world class bowler, under pressure. And a top overseas bat. Chappell taking a single first ball of the last over was strange. He could have whacked a quick 30. Kris
ReplyDeleteIt was close, but I reckon it just pitched in line. I thought the umpires did well, especially today!
DeleteI really thought we had this one especially after a great start to the day .I wonder if we lack confidence ! For years we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory .Derby shire til i die ! Let's keep on hoping and keep the faith ! !Malbar
ReplyDeleteWhen will we ever have a better opportunity to beat Lancs? Not for a very long time in my opinion. From 77-3 we should have walked to victory. To then lose seven wickets for just 31 runs was dreadful. I agree wholeheartedly with the view that we need Madsen back in the side now and that Donald is also required . He should not just be used for white ball cricket. A player with his ability is too good to be languishing on the sidelines. Chapel Guy
ReplyDeleteOuch! That hurt. For 7 and a quarter days my mild optimism seemed justified and was then given a beating in 2 and a half hours.
ReplyDeleteWhen the going gets tough the tough get going and today the tough guy was James Anderson. Still, Jimmy's been doing this on helpful pitches against the best batters in the world throughout his career so maybe we shouldn't get too despondent.
Scoring big runs on a flat pitch is one thing but doing it in difficult conditions is another.
Talking of pitches, will Lancashire be punished for producing a difficult batting strip?
I hope not. For me this was a proper track on which good batters could score runs and good bowlers could take wickets.
If it is ok there really isn't a requirement for Derbyshire to produce flat, lifeless wickets as seen in the Worcestershire match .
On another topic, when will Wayne Madsen be back? We still need him.
So disappointing but as Peakfan says, lifelong Derbyshire supporters have seen both the films that started our season many times before. Can’t finish teams off at the death. Get finished off ourselves in a winning position by a 40 odd year old JA. Not to mention the brainless decision to put them in instead of putting 400 on the board ourselves which would have won us the match. Accomplished bottlers. Perhaps they need a sports psychologist. Or maybe they should have checked the stats for batting last at OT when the weather is dodgy.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking - or typing - as a neutral I found it a thoroughly enjoyable match. Though I only watched the last day, the highlights and your summaries painted a vivid picture of what was a largely exciting match.
ReplyDeleteThe run out at the end was amusingly slapstick. I find walking a run is a much safer way of playing!
Alex, Dunblane
Great to hear from you Alex, and thanks for getting involved!
DeleteIf only Abbas had walked, they could at least have met halfway...
Lancs fan here, you were definitely the better side overall and I think you will be pushing for promotion this season. This is a super blog , very impartial and informative.
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't Reece opening the batting, or at least at 3, if he can't bowl? He has the best batting average, bar Madsen. Alex Thomson is a big miss with the bat lower down. Kris
ReplyDeleteVery disappointed. We'll never have a better chance to beat Lancs away, but the batters didn't apply themselves properly. Madsen would have made a difference, I think. Not the shocking LBW decision against Reece gave them the game. No excuses here, though.
