The winner of each group progresses straight to the semi-finals, with the second and third placed teams playing a play-off match against a team from the other group. The winner of each play-off will then play one of the group winners in the semi-finals.
For Derbyshire to go through, we need to beat Durham at The Riverside, while Hampshire lose to Middlesex. I am not overly confident of our fulfilling our side of the bargain, but Middlesex appears woefully weak and I struggle to see any way in which they will beat Hampshire.
We will see..
I wondered if you know?
ReplyDeleteShould both Derbyshire and Hampshire win, would it go to run rate or would their victory over us in the group be the deciding factor.
Thanks. Craig
Regulation 16.11.4 says that net run rate decides, then the result between the sides in question, Craig. So we not only need to win but the NRR is 0.171 to them and 0.026 to us. Mainly as a result of our thrashing at Southampton...
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
DeleteThe Kent game was the killer. We should and probably would have won that if we had mustered 250 runs. It feels a long shot that both games go our way but you never know.
ReplyDeleteGiven that Mickey had signed players who had won tournaments, as he made a big point about this ("We've got guys who know how to win"), it shouldn't come down to this, We haven't performed well, consistently, in either the T20 or Metro cup. And the other competition is no excuse, as every club has lost players to it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not confident we will fulfil our side of the bargain either. In 'big' games we just don't turn up, will Wednesday be any different?....
ReplyDeleteLook how that T20 game panned out when we needed to win against the same county, a real lame effort was put in. Think they'll have too much for our depleted team, we've probably done as well as we can without our main players who have all had poor hundred campaigns, why do counties want our players anyway?
ReplyDeleteThe problem as I see it is that MA signed two players who in their time were white ball specialists. But in the twilight of their careers it was optimistic to think thst they could repeat their past heroics. Added to that we have had two ineffective overseas fast bowlers who have achieved very little for us when what we needed was an accomplished overseas batsman who could perhaps have taken over the captaincy. Time will tell whether the signings of Lloyd and Donald will bear fruit. Donald has played some good innings for us though in Lloyd's case I can recall only one. To conclude, I think you could have made more astute signings than MA ,Steve!
ReplyDeleteWe aren't a bad white ball county, Blue. I think fans get confused by the red and white ball formats. We were 1 win off qualifying in the T20 and still have a chance, going into the last 50 over game. If we'd have signed a quality overseas batter, I think we'd have qualified in both. Kris
ReplyDeleteWe're playing teams much more depleted than we are and having only limited success. That shouldn't mask what has been a very disappointing season.
DeleteThe buck stops with MA and the coaching team. Poor recruitment hasn't helped, but I don't think it's the only reason.
I don't think there is any confusion. We are a very bad red ball side and an average white ball side.
Agreed Jasper, a few wins in this cup doesn't change anything, it's been another rubbish season. Qualification from this group would provide minor success but I wouldn't put 50p on that happening. Only one more season of MA anyway
DeleteI noticed that Donald isn't playing for the 3rd game in a row for the Birmingham team. Any chance he's back with us on Wednesday? We could certainly do with a boost to the batting ranks.
ReplyDeleteTo be confirmed, but a possibility. And would be a huge bonus for us, if we got him back!
DeleteThere is a small chance of it raining all day in Northwood, but likely to be a dry day in Chester-le-Street. An Act of God of this sort may be our best chance!
