Derbyshire v Glamorgan preview

Derbyshire return to red ball action on home turf tomorrow, with a twelve-man squad strengthened by the addition - and return - of Jack Morley from Lancashire. With injuries biting, it is effectively the last eleven standing with Morley the likely spinning option in the continued absence of Alex Thomson. He is back on what is initially a two-match loan and hopefully he gets a chance to show what he can do.

Wayne Madsen, Nye Donald and Pat Brown returns from duties elsewhere in the following twelve. The first eleven named make up the likely side, at least for me:

Came, Reece, Guest, Lloyd, Madsen, Donald, Dal, Chappell, Morley, Dupavillon, Brown (Potts).

Glamorgan will come in on a high, having reached the final of the one-day cup. They have played excellent cricket this year under a very good coach, Grant Bradburn. They still have an outside chance of promotion in 4-day cricket so it should be good to watch, as Derbyshire strive to get their first win of the season.

Their squad:

Sam Northeast (c)
Kiran Carlson
Chris Cooke
Mason Crane
Dan Douthwaite
Andy Gorvin
Colin Ingram
Ben Kellaway
Ned Leonard
Billy Root
Fraser Sheat
Asa Tribe
Timm van der Gugten
Will Smale

I hope we see a pitch like the ones we saw for the One Day Cup. There was a little more pace and bounce in them and we must hope that they are indicative of plans for next year onwards.

Having said that, I am going to call a draw here. Rain look set to take time out of the day tomorrow and also on Saturday, so much will depend on how the respective batting lineups play on the other days.

It is hard, even for an optimist like me, to suggest a home win based on track record and playing resources that are limited.

But as always I will be watching from the start and hoping for improved home performances in the remainder of the 2024 season.

  1. Looks like a good opportunity for Pat Brown to try and transfer his white ball success into the red ball stuff in the final 5 games.

  2. I remember you championing the cause of Grant Bradburn last time our Head of Cricket role became available. He has done very well. Craig.

    1. Has a reputation of getting the best from non-elite players. Made him a strong candidate for us but we went the other way...

  3. We need to see what Potts can do. If he’s not good enough we need to find out, but he might just live up to the billing that Dave Houghton was giving him three or so years ago as the most exciting young player in the system at county level. It’s worth bearing in mind too that Wagstaff could’ve been involved but for some reason has been consigned to a pointless second eleven match versus a weak Yorkshire side. So much weirdness about things with Derbyshire at the moment!

I well recall you championing Bradburn as our new Head Coach prior to the appointment of Arthur. It still feels to me as though we passed up an inviting opportunity.

    1. I did, well-remembered! He is a top coach and fine man, did an excellent job with Scotland and made them far better in his time there

  5. I see Pujara is leaving Sussex. He would seriously enhance our 4 day batting line up. Does he play white ball cricket ?

    1. Well, he averages 52 in red ball, 57 in white ball, 29 in T20. I would be more than happy with him for 50 over and 4 day cricket, then find more powerful option for T20. Very fine batter, exactly what we need!

    2. And only 36, so good for 3 or 4 years. A logical replacement for Madsen, when his time comes?

    3. Pujara did pretty well when he played for us - apart from when he had the unusual distinction of being out "handled the ball"
