Yorkshire v. Derbyshire day two

Yorkshire 297 and 179-2 (Bean 64, Thomson 1-64)

Derbyshire 247 (Madsen 93, Wagstaff 52)

Yorkshire lead by 229 runs

After a morning session in which they made good progress, Derbyshire showed the side of their game that frustrates supporters in the afternoon, with a very disappointing display.

Going into lunch at 149-3, with Madsen and du Plooy well set, 300 should have been well within our range, but we were bowled out for 247.

One or two deliveries kept low, but Yorkshire simply bowled straight and waited for our batters to play around the delivery. They bowled with commendable accuracy and discipline, the spell of Fisher in the early afternoon changing the game.

Du Plooy looked rattled by a vehement appeal for caught behind, which was celebrated with undue haste by the home side who declined to wait on the umpires decision. Thereafter, Thompson appealed for most things that missed the bat in a petulant and unnecessary display. He's a good cricketer, but his reactions were not worthy of the first class game and smacked of petulance. He doesn't need to do that.

Madsen was excellent - how often have I written that over the past decade or more? - but the rest was very anaemic and highly disappointing. Wagstaff made a good and worthy maiden half century, but it was hugely underwhelming after lunch.

Just as it was after tea. Conners bowled well and commanded respect, but the rest of the bowling was disappointing and, with Yorkshire already over 200 ahead, Derbyshire can pretty much say goodbye to this game.

Quite frankly, they deserve nothing. Until we can narrow the gap between our good game and bad, we will not progress as a side.

How they go about doing that should certainly occupy the thoughts of the coaching staff over the winter months.

  1. An uneven display so typical of our season. After a good first day and first session today, our lower middle order collapsed and then we bowled poorly. Wagstaffe deserves plaudits. At only 20 years old he is an emerging talent who should be nurtured. And where would we be without Madsen? I shudder to think.

  2. Were the two innings today played on different pitches ?

You can see why we have the second worst Batting Bonus Points Total in the division in that we always seem to mess it up in the first innings. From the spell by Fisher and then Revis which accounted for Lamb, Dal and Thompson it seemed obvious from the one end you needed to bowl at the stumps and the low bounce would cause all sorts of problems. Yet when we bowled we seemed to bowl far too short with too many four balls.

Scarborough along with Chesterfield have to be at the top of list (or near to) of the best out grounds.

Tomorrow is another day though we may need a second innings similar to Hove to come close in this one.

  3. Fully in the game for 4 sessions and potentially in the ascendancy at lunch …Game over 2 session's later !! … A nod to Scarborough Cricket Club , all staff helpful ,a result wicket prepared and knowledgeable applause for Madsen's efforts today ..

    1. Would love such wickets at Derby. If you can bat, you can score runs. If you can, bowl, you can take wickets. But only half of our side have contributed here and that isn't enough

    2. Yes, another out ground which produces a good result pitch. Unfortunately it's probably not going to go in our favour but good to see an even contest between bat and ball.

Wagstaff and Madsen looked at ease, but you always felt that our soft underbelly could be exposed yet again and it duly was. Yorkshire bowled better after lunch, and with our inconsistent line and lengths in their second innings we are up against it.

On a separate note, I believe Harry Moore is injured...😔

    3. More power to outgrounds and result pitches! I think young Mr Moore will have a few of those over the years. Goes with the territory, bowling isn't a natural mechanical thing for a body, especially at anything above slow!

  4. For the umpteenth time this season our batting has collapsed from a position of some strength. Whilst some individuals may have improved others have gone backwards and as a batting unit we are weaker than last season. Not good enough with pretty much zero chance of winning this game now.

  5. I’ve been thinking about the comments on yesterday’s post about MA not being present at the match. Tbh I don’t think it’s good enough. I doubt we’d be winning this game if he was present - but having your top leader around should surely help. I hope he’s agreed to a significant reduction in his salary to reflect his time away and dual focus. Sorry to bring it up again PF but it does feel a bit like we’re being used.

I don't think Mickey Arthur's heart is in this Derbyshire job like a lot of other posters say, he's been pretty much inconspicuous by his absence this season and has given comments on matches probably about three or four times in all competitions.
The last I recall hearing from him was after our poor metro cup campaign where he was pretty upbeat about it , just disappointing he said when it was downright poor.
We need to hit the ground running next season because if not we'll be looking for another coach without a doubt

    2. He was away in Pakistan up to the Yorkshire game. I am told he has been there for the first two days of this one

  7. Same old Derbyshire, in a good position after day one and yet struggling to stay in the game after day two. Particularly disappointing that five of the top order contributed little to the score. As usual Wayne Madsen is absolved of any criticism after another lovely innings. Equally frustrating that our bowlers didn’t bowl line and length in the second innings apart from Conners. The end of another disappointing season can’t come too soon.

    1. Pretty cheap shot, Tozer. You should be better than that. Stats prove they generally have, but everyone has a bad day.

  9. I'm not sure the catch that finally got du Plooy actually carried, but it was almost a relief to have a break from Thompson appealing! The loss of Reece for this game was a hammer blow, with bat and ball. We would also rather have Haider Ali than not. I thought Conners bowled well today, without much luck and Madsen was sublime. Other than that, I'm. afraid it was very average. Kris

  10. Mr Tozer, have a look at bat stats two years ago, then come back. We're all underwhelmed by this season, but get off the players backs, no one can complain about their efforts, successful or not.
Some of the players will go because they are not quite good enough, others will stay, but I tell you what, I wish I'd been good enough to play even one match at county level.
So lets give MA his third season, he is a top notch coach, let him prove it with his decisions. If they are wrong, we go again until we get it right, but you don't give up, otherwise, what's the point?
