  1. Guess that kind of answers the question posted t'other night re Leus and what's the point as he's Middx now.
I reckon the question should be why didn't we do more to keep him?

  2. Interesting how Middlesex can afford him on such a long contract considering their financial problems. I think you play your best team while you’re paying their wages and try and win games. Can see why Pat Brown moved as he wasn’t ever going to play 4 day cricket but Du Plooy is on our best players and being paid well till the end of his contract so should carry on playing

  3. Despite what Mickey Arthur has said about Derbyshire attracting quality players, we once again seem to be in the situation where our best players are poached by other clubs while we rely on other counties' rejects to boost our squad. Derbyshire will never be in a better situation while this continues.

    1. We have attracted David Lloyd from Glamorgan and Pat Brown from Worcestershire, so it is not one way traffic. Players are generally going to where the money is or prospects of playing are better. Martin

    2. ...but in terms of getting better, I can't see that Brown at Worcs has really been any better than Scrimshaw at Derbys (key white-ball bowler, can't generally get in the red-ball side); Lloyd for du Plooy is a huge downgrade (averages almost 20 runs less, has 30% of the number of centuries from fewer games); Lamb and Chappell may improve the side but on the other hand neither of them could break into their previous county's first-choice side regularly in either main format; and Amir for Lakmal/Zaman Khan--we'll see whether he's been signed on what he's like in 2023-4 or what he was like in 2018-9!

All of which rather bears out Chapel Guy's point to my mind. And of course it raises the question of whether Arthur's pulling power is quite what it's cracked up to be.

    3. I think there will be people aware of MA reputation and want to be part of it, just as there will be those who prefer not to get involved...

As for players, the answer is that we haven't won much with them, so maybe we try something different. When Derbyshire signed Barry Wood, John Hampshire, Steve Oldham, Colin Wells they weren't in their prime, but they were battlers who gave a different dimension to the group.

Lloyd isn't as good a bat as du Plooy, but he will bring a different dynamic. Maybe the all round offer is better, like the others. I certainly won't pre-judge them, as that won't be be fair

  4. It's puzzling why du Plooy has decided to leave for Middlesex. Okay, they have a Test stadium, but on the field this season they've been no better than us. Perhaps he doesn't buy into the picture Mickey has painted of success being around the corner. Same with Masood leaving for Yorkshire. I think it's all about the money being offered.

    1. A 5 year contract. Which is pretty much unheard of in domestic cricket.

  5. It happens to 'smaller' teams in every sport Chapel Guy. The key is how do you convert from being a smaller club, to a team where players want to stay and of course earn?
The funny thing is, the move doesn't always work for the player. The most glaring recent example to me is Mark Footitt, liked and respected here, but seduced by the cash and potential fame of Surrey, only to fade to rapid obscurity.

  6. Middlesex offered him a 5 (FIVE!) year contract. I'm sure they are delighted with his century yesterday. Me? I don't give a hoot. The remaining games should be used with OUR future in mind.

I wish Leus all the best for next season and don't blame him for accepting the security of a 5 year deal, but, as with Masood, he might not be plying his trade in the CC division he thought when he signed.

  7. It's professional sport. With the exception of a very small number of players/ athletes, it will be about the money, as it would be in many other walks of life. Sad, but reality. We will never be privy to what happens behind the doors of the club, nor to what contacts and connections the players have that might lead them elsewhere. All we can do is support those who wear the shirt on the day we pay to watch. I also support Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers ......

  9. Just looked at the score Derbyshire have bowled 28 overs and Brown hadn't bowled can we assume from that he's injured?
