Three-year deal for Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson has signed a three-year contract with Derbyshire, making him the first of several likely
wRichard Matthew Johnsoninter signings.

More later, but this is a good bit of business by the club.

  1. He seems a talented player and fitted in to the dressing room well by all accounts but I confess to being slightly puzzled. It's been commented on here more than once that it seems unlikely he would move from Warwickshire reserves to Derbyshire reserves. But where does he fit in? On the keeping front he will plainly be behind Poynton. In the middle order he will be behind madsen, Durston, redfern and whitely. What we really need are openers. Given his innings against the Yorkers it may be that a more prominent role in the one-day stuff is envisage?
May I emphasise that I don't think he is a bad signing; I'm simply not sure how he matches our needs.

  3. I think you may find Johnson plays primarily as an opener, being paired with an overseas partner at the top of the order. Tom Poynton may well continue as wicketkeeper.

I could well be wrong, by I think this is what Karl Krikken may have in mind.
