Derbyshire v Worcestershire

You'd have to say that, all things considered, we made a real mess of that tonight.

After fighting back well in the last overs of the visitors innings, then making a good start to our reply, one by one batsmen got themselves out with silly and unnecessary shots. Senior players too, ones who should know better. Well as Guptill and Durston played, they gave it away when they should have used their heads. You can't get away from that, I'm afraid. It was like my club side would do.

The youngsters found things a bit too much for them tonight too, the wiles of the experienced Ajmal too great. It was good to see Wayne Madsen get a few in the middle of the bat again, but this was inescapably a poor show by Derbyshire.

I'm not sure what it is about the visitors, They didn't look a side but we seem to make Moeen Ali look like Jim Laker and it was poor stuff at the end. Listening to the commentators was not the most fun in the world either, especially Bob Willis.

Hope we do better than that tomorrow.

  1. Have to say that this was brain-dead cricket by Derbyshire. Durston and Guptill had the game comfortably won and just needed to bide their time and carry on what they were doing. Their departures provoked a headlong panic in which Worcs had to do little but stand back and watch.

While it's easy to blame the batters however, Derbyshire were always chasing 20 more than was comfortable, and you have to ask about the captain's logic in giving Turner three overs when Groenewald, Palladino and Clare didn't bowl their full allocation. I doubt if there is a one day team who can afford a Turner in their side, and certainly not us.

Like the t20 demise, none of this is a surprise to me - this never for a moment looked like a Derbyshire side who could seriously compete in one day competitions, and the surprise for me is only that they did as well as they did for so long. Perhaps, though, those who have been calling for Poynton to replace Sutton will now shut up. Decent keeper but out of his depth with the bat in this situation.

  2. Cant work out why the bad feeling and snide comments about Chris Grant. I was a huge fan of DA, in fact I was the only one at the AGM who could be bothered to stand up and speak out about how badly DA had been treated by the 3 people only to get heckled by the people there.

I don't care what people think of me I`ll speak my mind, I am not beholden to anybody, however for the record it turns out I have complete faith in Chris Grant, as much as I liked Don, CG is the future of the club now. I cant work out what agenda people have against him, surely still cant be bad blood over the sacking of Morris?

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth would be my humble opinion.

  3. Hi Peakfan

I think enough is enough and we need to drop Madsen down the order for County Championship games, everyone can see that he is a better player down the order. I thought Hughes bowled well and Turner talk about expensive, I really what his preffered competition is CC, CB40, or 20/20 because which ever one he plays he gets hit all over the park.

Notoveryet, I am sorry but your comments about Poynton are harsh, what would have Sutton have done maybe look for the single and give Madsen the strike but did you watch the game Middlesex he could barely hit the bowl out of the inner circle. Poynton is still young and needs to be given time but Saeed Ajmal will bamboozle batsmen around the with variations and his doosra, how do you think Sutton would have played, personally my opinion Sutton would struggled against Ajmal.

  4. John, the comment wasn't intended to be harsh on Poynton (better out of his depth than losing his head like a few others tonight) and I'm sorry if it sounded like it. I also agree that on showings so far Sutton may not have achieved more, although his maturity and experience might have given Madsen support at a stage when it was still winnable. As it was, I understand he was injured, so there was no choice in the matter.

The comment was intended as a rebuke to those who have been relentlessly pursuing Sutton for weeks and demanding Poynton's promotion - my point being that at best, it made no difference, and at worst removed a calming and mature approach that has been a major contribution to the environment in which more of our young players have been thriving than for many years past.

  5. Was planning on going but with the inclement weather hovering around I decided not to bother with the drive (live in Cheshire) so listened to the radio instead.

Game was good and won with Guptill and Durston, and then we just imploded. Still, hopefully it gives the club the chance to have a look at some other players in the run up to next year... I'd like to see Borrington and Lineker get chances now, to name just two.

  6. What can you say except typical Derbyshire. Once again the cricket world sees us make a complete arse of what should should have been a routine victory,in a game with no real pressure attatched to it.

I agree with much of peakfan and notoveryet,s observations. Guptill and Durston needlessly got out with poor shots and the rest decided to follow suit. It was poor.Very poor.

On the bowling front, the continued presence of Turner is like playing Russian roulette with all six chambers loaded. It must be obvious to even his most ardent supporters that he is a disaster that always happens. Whilst the CB40 is somewhat different to T20,one thing we should have learned is the value of slow bowling, particularly at home. The more expensive bowlers have, nearly always, been the seamers. For the tacticians and selectors, the penny just doesn,t seem to have dropped.

Others have rightly criticised Guptill and Durston but once again it was Hughes who lit the touch paper. Another awful shot in what has turned into an awful one day season for him. A look at his stats will surprise many on just how poor he has been. Saved only by his bowling,he is now looking every bit as vulnerable against seam bowling as he does against spin. It,s a big worry and cannot be allowed to continue next season.

I said Smith should no longer be selected, for various reasons. We are gaining nothing by keeping him in the team and missing an opportunity to give a younger player valuable experience. I can,t understand the logic of it. Durston has been under bowled this season and i,m sure, given the overs,he will prove every bit as good as Smith and probably better.

Let us hope for better things today.

  7. Worcester fielded better than us ie no overthrows. In addition, they did not bowl any wides whilst we bowled 5.
