Netherlands v Derbyshire

Oh dear...

That was a poor one and while the wicket was obviously difficult we should have won the game.

Steady bowling, but poor batting. That's all you can really say.

Marks to Garry Park for battling it out and to Steffan Jones and Tim Groenewald for eking out the runs for a tie, but we really should have done better than that against that level of opposition

Disappointed...very disappointed. Maybe a great game of cricket, but we should win these.

  2. Not a complete disaster if worcs beat middlesex but yes we should be doing better. 7 days rest now lets hope the likes of footit, borrington etc. can get fully fit and we can have a full squad to choose from for the next 2 championship games

  3. Yes,i think you,ve said it all peakfan. Cant say it comes as a great surprise though. Maybe we should select the batting coach to play, then they can all sit and watch how it should be done.

  4. Poor result. Things need to improve, and fast. Hope this doesn't turn out like the year the players forced Dean Jones out early in the season....

  5. This is why I wasn't getting too carried away by three straight wins in the CB40. I think this result is more in keeping with our real status in one day cricket for the past few years under both Morris and Houghton. It certainly isn't going to change overnight whoever is in charge. Perhaps we can take some small encouragement from sustaining it over three games rather than the one or two that we've seen in previous years, but I won't be holding my breath.

I really don't think we're helping ourselves with the batting order, though. I don't buy Hughes yet as a one day opener - he may come off but more often will be gone quickly rather than doing real damage in the middle or end of the innings with defensive fields. Likewise Khuwaja. Madsen meanwhile can adapt his rate after a steady start and should always open in my book. While Durston is in a good run opening, we should be using him there in one day as well as four day. With Park at three to guard against an early loss of wickets, and Khuwaja, Hughes and Smith in the middle order to give later acceleration, I think we'd give ourselves a much better chance.

  6. You are so right (notoveryet). Its obvious to a blind man the order is wrong.Ive said it myself in comments elswhere on this blog and i just fail to see the thinking behind the current batting order. Park,s confidence was hardly helped last season by constantly shuffling up and down the order and the same thing will happen to Hughes,if it hasn,t happened already. We dont have enough experienced batsmen and there is no pressure on those who are consistently failing. We cant do much about it this season, but this problem has to be addressed and something done for next season.

  7. I was very interested in Luke Sutton's interview yesterday morning on Radio Derby where he said that losing John Morris has had a de-stabalising effect on the club, which begs another question. In all Luke Sutton's interviews over the Morris affair I have never heard Luke talk about a single word of support that he had given to John even though they were supposed to be working together.

  8. lots of cricket to play yet, fingers crossed

  10. The 'know it alls' at the County Ground have been saying for some time that the Morris / Sutton tiff started after Morris gave some of the young players a ticking off about their attitude which as manager he wouldn't have been out of order doing. I wouldn't mark this down as a sacking offence!

  11. There has to far more to it than that. Nobody would sack anyone on those grounds alone, least of all the person in charge of the team. We will all hear bits of bobs of what supposedly went off,but i think we supporters are very unlikely to ever discover the whole truth. I dont like player power,as i said in an earlier blog, however, the days of managers that shoot from the hip and ask questions later are fast coming to an end. These days most wouldn,t even have time to re load their gun. Rightly or wrongly old style managers like Alex Ferguson, for example, are dinosaurs now. They all have to be player pleasers now. Do you think anyone else would have got away with re arranging Beckhams features?. No, i dont think so either.

  12. Well on the subject of Sutton clearly not supporting Morris then we have to understand that cricket is the same as the real world. If Sutton wanted Morris' job then we can see why he might not have supported Morris in any way.

  13. When Sutton comes on the Radio stating that John Morris' team selection a major reason for his sacking and then Sutton picks the same team for his first two games in charge it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to work out there is something a bit fishy going on!

  14. You might have a point, though i dont recall where Sutton has ever stated he wanted Morris'job. It may be his ultimate ambition but i think, for now at least,he sees himself primarily as a player. It would be extremely difficult,if not impossible to combine the two and i dont think it would, in any way,be a satisfactory outcome to the current situation.

  15. Luke Sutton is no fool and he knows that the only way that he could extend his stay at the County Ground beyond next summer when his playing contract expires is to become the manager.

  16. I thought he signed for three years, but i might be wrong there. Anyway, two years is still a fair amount of time and who,s to say his contract wont be renewed when the time comes. Only he knows what he would like to do in the future, unless he makes it public knowledge.

  17. That might be the case for Joe Bloggs at the local factory but in sport things work differently. For starters,no one knows the terms on which Morris was originally set on,nor any compensation package should he be sacked or leave the job under different circumstances. Football managers get sacked left, right and centre but rarely ,if ever, do you hear of anyone going to a tribunal, except possibly if there is a dispute over the level of compensation. The terms of dismissal are usually laid out in the contract itself and anyone taking these type of jobs knows the axe is always hanging over them.

  18. Whatever was in John's contract I doubt whether there was a clause about keeping the captain happy!

  19. Marc, you make some good points but football managers are sacked due to poor results. It's more than likely that our manager was sacked after a senior player, who didn't like him probably fuelled by the managers alleged spat with the younger players, engineered getting him out. Unfortunately, it looks like the chairman fell for the oldest trick in the book and sacked him.

  20. I think that we would all like the Morris sacking saga put to an end but whilst visitors to the County Ground are treated to stories on how a senior player got Morris the sack it won't happen.

  21. Last thoughts from me on Morris/Brown. As peakfan rightly says,we are only covering old ground and i think most points have already been raised.
You are right football managers are usually sacked because of poor results. As many will know from my previous blogs,it was my belief Morris should have been sacked at the end of last season for those same reasons. One reason he wasn,t was the fact he enjoyed the support and backing of then chairman Don Arnott and at that time few on the committee seemed prepared to rock the boat.Maybe they agreed with him,i dont know.As its turned out he has gone for thing which happened off the pitch, which i suppose are of equal importance. That,s one of the problems with committees, they all pat each other on the back when things are going well but few are prepared to stick their heads above the deck if things go wrong. The attitude is usually "Its not my fault,i didn,t vote for it,blame the others".

I know Morris had his supporters and thats fair enough. I wasn,t one of them but we all see things through different eyes. If nothing else it makes for lively and interesting debate on here!. According to peakfans poll it would seem the level of support for Morris amongst supporters is on a par with that he had in the dressing room,so given the vast majority agree with the chairman its now time to put this debate to rest.
