All I can say is that if Yusuf bIn Naeem doesn't get a game tomorrow, especially after scoring a brilliant 132 for Sandiacre today, I don't see any logic in selection at all. He should be told that he is playing and batting three. End of story.
I don't think we have enough to beat Middlesex, who are deservedly top of the group and have played some very good cricket. Their likely side:
De Caires, Fernandes, Geddes, Cracknell, Hellman, Nelson, Gohar, Roland-Jones, Brookes, Cornwell, Sharma
It looks like another hot day in Derby, but I suspect that will be the highlight for most of the home support. Drink plenty of water and take your sun cream!

You cannot just play “youngsters” they need putting on a special contract as most are on pathway contracts all which cost extra money out of the cricket budget.When they might need to bring in extra players for the rest of the CC campaign why would that make sense ? which youngsters are you referring to ? Let's keep it civil people, please. Pathway or not, they do still need to be registered and on a contract for the competition. I would still have thought giving Stewart a game would have had merit and putting him on a contract accordingly.

Steve, if every other County has managed to put their young players on whatever deal supposedly required to play in this and we've failed to do so then that is the most tragic and damning indictment of our approach to youth development I've seen yet.

Which ever way around anyone wants to play it, it's utterly damning for the club.
To be honest Rob, I think bringing youngsters wholesale into a struggling side wouldn't work. There is some serious talent there but we can't drop 3/4 15 and 16 year olds in against Roland Jones, Brookes and Gohar. But as I wrote the other day, we need a strategy for when they are ready, because this one isn't working.

Somerset lost 8 players to 💯 so they are getting a reimbursement for those players. They are therefore able to offer those opportunities to academy players and the cost is self funded.they probably actually save money on their cricket budgets. Derbyshire had 1 player taken at the time the competition started so chose to give the chance to Basra and Bin N etc I’m not defending a position or agreeing with any decisions made on cricket just stating why this happens.
DeletePlayers have to be on approved playing contracts. These can be short term and as long as the player signs to accept it then can be exempt from the minimum salary expectations set by the ECB to protect full time cricketers. A common arrangement during the one day cup at other counties and indeed something we did last season for Hawkins. The cost is minimal.
DeleteWith our available pace bowlers I'm flabbergasted that what is basically a very low cost admin task wasn't carried out to ensure Stewart could play. Hawkins and Wagstaff are of course available to play as they're on pro or rookie deals.
If the club can't be bothered to cover this minimal expense for the likes of someone as promising as Stewart when our attack is barebones then what's the point? We're rubbish and seemingly have little ambition to develop our own players either.
It's not even about throwing 16 year olds in...it's giving proper opportunities to the young players already in or around the squad.
Point taken on Somerset, but both Basra and Naeem were already contracted by Derbyshire. Could they have used the saving on Donald for a short term deal for Stewart? Especially when Montgomery also went? He would have been useful today...

Why bring in any more players and spend through more budget when the squad was big enough even with the bowling injuries The need to bring in academy players only arises if you get hit hard with 💯 call ups or if you have the luxury of spare money. It was the perfect opportunity for the 2 players mentioned to play .Just because they are contracted makes no difference in fact all the more reason to give them first chance.No secret it was said today that they wanted to give those players plus Potts the chance to play. Like you say the biggest disappointment is the results from on paper an experienced squad. I think everyone acknowledges that. If Basra had not got injured then it was very likely he would have been playing alongside Bin N Haydon and Potts. Just because we can no longer qualify does not mean you can just bring in a youngster for a couple of games. Jason
