Derbyshire 150-9 (Andersson 49, Montgomery 26)
Lancashire 150-8 (Livingstone 31, Hurst 30, Moqim 3-15, Montgomery 2-29)
Match tied
For the first couple of overs you could watch the game and its many camera angles, before it switched to a fixed camera at either end, with plenty of adverts for the 'premium stream'. Which was fine, until it switched to a scorecard and commentary only - but with plenty of adverts for the 'premium stream'.
I considered paying for the 'premium stream', but considering it justification for their 'thought process' and didn't bother. Besides, I had no real desire to watch interminable crowd shots and Lanky the mascot strutting his stuff, nor filling in a lengthy form, so I didn't. If this becomes de rigeur I might find another hobby, or just watch video reruns of old games on YouTube.
It was awful.
Anyway, by then the Derbyshire innings was in terminal decline and they limped to a final score of 150-9. Andersson batted well, so too Montgomery for a while, but it was a slow pitch and the advent of the spinners strangled the Derbyshire batting. Donald hit a couple of sixes but his pinch hitting was never likely to succeed against one so wily as Jimmy Anderson.
That strangulation suggested that Derbyshire's selection of Jack Morley instead of Ben Aitchison would prove crucial. He bowled well, as did Montgomery, while Moqim was excellent. It was a pitch made for him and his 3-15 gave Derbyshire every chance.
I can't be the only one, however, to wait for defeat to be snatched from the jaws of victory. Javed bowled well, exceeding 90mph at times, but his no ball in the penultimate over cost six from the free hit and the last over looked tight for Potts. Pace or not, Javed went for ten an over and it wasn't - or shouldn't have been - that kind of pitch.
Potts started the last over well, with yorkers, then opted to bowl short and went for two boundaries. It left Lancashire needing one from the last ball, when he returned to a yorker and bowled Hurst, who had kept his side in the game. It was a good effort from the youngster, who continues to impress.
But Derbyshire again should have closed out that game. With 37 needed from 17 balls, it was another frustrating end.
Bit like the competition for us, really
To be fair, I signed up and watched it for free from my Zante hotel bar. Made sure I signed up for nowt from them though. Anyway, should have won it. Your overseas quick bowling a no ball and seeing the free hit clonked for 6 sums us up.
ReplyDeleteOnce agin in the T20, we should have won. For whatever reason, Steve, we seem to lack the killer instinct, the ability to push the game that bit further (the extra 10% Mickey often talks about), whether with the bat or the ball.
ReplyDeleteExactly my sentiments and almost word for word what I said to my son at last weeks home game. Unfortunately changing that mindset takes an awfully long time which is a shame because I believe this is a talented team. Ian, Heanor
DeleteThat was Downthewicket.
ReplyDeleteI made the exact same comment about the stream in your preview post, but it hasn't come up yet

Went to the game tonight and enjoyed it more being a low scoring game than normal. We probably should have lost after their power play but should have won with a few overs to go. I do think we overthink things. Javed had bowled really well for an over and a half of Yorkers then two or three players come and have a minute of chat and field changes and promptly bowls a no ball and then hit for 6. Same with Potts in the last over. Three good balls then 4 people surround him and he bowls two half track off side balls with all the field on the leg side! Anyway fair play for the last ball and at least we haven’t lost at Old Trafford for once!
ReplyDeleteIt will be the future of live streaming especially t20. It’s the cash cow and it’s certainly going to be milked. Unfortunately with the inane commentary and constant gimmicks and shots of the crowd it’s like most things a big race to the bottom. At least for people like me it makes four day cricket better to watch then ever
ReplyDeletePs I do accept each to their own and a lot of people like very short format cricket but I’m so pleased I’ve never been to a game of t20
ReplyDeleteMe 2 Ian ! Done even mention the hundred or franchises! MalBar
DeleteNothing that cricket can ever invent would be able to beat the perfect cover drive or straight drive or watching a batsman build a innings by grinding the bowlers down.
DeleteI checked the scores after we had batted and Lancashire were something like 40-1. I went to do other things.
ReplyDeleteDespite so many options, transfers in and out and lots of bullish talk, the fact is that we're just not very good at cricket
We do have Queens Park though.
I live in hope for a better showing in the 50 competition, but with far less expectation.
Andy
Groundhog day.
ReplyDeleteThere may be a mote of intelligence lurking somewhere in the team but it's well disguised.
No leadership on the field. Poor captaincy by Donald to the extent that Madsen was clearly calling the shots when the going got tough.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve been a poor side for a very long time now, and you have to seriously wonder how Mickey has burgled a career as a cricket coach !
Said it before I dread to think how much it has cost to hire Mickey he was supposed to be an upgrade on Dave Houghton , I never bother going to AGM’s anymore but I would be interested if any member has ever challenged the management board to justify his extension to his contract
