The Derbyshire squad for the opening game against Durham, at the Our Co-op County Ground tomorrow has now been announced. Harry Came will captain the side in this competition.
Zak Chappell will miss the early part of the One-Day Cup through a foot issue, while Amrit Basra is sidelined through a broken thumb. Pat Brown (shoulder) and Harry Moore (back) remain long-term absentees.
Luis Reece has been granted compassionate leave due to a family situation, while Caleb Jewell is not contracted to feature in the One Day Cup.
With Nye Donald and Matt Montgomery at the other competition, the squad basically picks itself:
Harry Came (c), Joe Hawkins, Martin Andersson,
Shoaib Bashir, Ben Aitchison, Jack Morley, Mitch Wagstaff, Yousaf Bin Naeem, Nick Potts, Brooke Guest, Ross Whiteley, Anuj Dal, Wayne Madsen,

Durham will be missing Ben Raine, Matt Potts, Brydon Carse, Callum Parkinson, Ben McKinney and Nathan Sowter. The game offers Derbyshire a game they therefore SHOULD win, but any dip in their form will be punished, as we have seen already this summer in The Blast. The presence of Ben Stokes in the visiting squad should add a few bums to seats

Moving on, I was thrilled to see Northamptonshire win on Saturday. Darren Lehmann has done a fine job there, across the formats, but a major part of their success was the seam bowling of the experienced trio of David Willey, Ben Sanderson and Luke Procter. Their batting always gave them something to bowl at and I hugely respect the strategy that has gone into their win.
They have two aggressive overseas bats in Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney, with all rounder Calvin Harrison a very shrewd pick up from Nottinghamshire. Fair play to them, they did very well and it is great to see smaller counties really can win trophies with the right acquisitions.
Hopefully it is our turn, one of these days ...

Hope to see some young players get opportunities. There would be something quite tragic to see MA pick his most experienced side in an effort to win against opposition teams filled with many a young and emerging player. If he goes rhat route then he should be judged accordingly if we don't do well.

Whatever team we put onto the pitch we should really be one of the favourites to get into at least the semifinals. We have lost less players to the other rubbish then almost every other county.And most of the first division teams probably don’t take this competition too seriously.Derbyshire badly need to do well in something otherwise it’s a very poor season again with not much promise of it getting any better. Mohammed Abbas is probably unlikely to play in Derbyshire colours again this season as he’s now starting a two test tour of the w. Indies and a half decent performance will see him play in the 3 test series in England. Then no doubt a rest

ReplyDeleteI quite like the sound of "should win", might even nip down for the first time this season. Durham will be missing a lot of players but it will be interesting to see how much of that will be mitigated by the inclusion of Ben Stokes.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, is MA sticking with Derbyshire this month or is he off with the Leeds Super Buffalos? Genuine question as I pay no heed to that competition.

DeleteNorthamptonshire showing that 2 overseas bowlers for the T20 (i.e. Derbyshire) doesn't work. They may bowl economic spells occasionally, but so may home players i.e. Matthew Montgomery. Derbyshire desperately needed overseas batsmen of sufficient quality. Not cheap, but I wouldn't have thought Northamptonshire's budget is that much different to Derbyshire's.

Like the confidence but they have a decent team as only lost McKinney from the batting and their bowling still has Stokes, overseas and their captain plus decent back up in Will Rhodes. I suspect at least 7 or 8 of their team would get into our team which is a general test! Here’s hoping anyway!!
ReplyDeleteDerbyshire should win?! Durham’s top 6 is likely to be: Lees, Clark, Rhodes, Ackermann, Robinson, Ben Stokes – Lees/Stokes/Ackermann have played international cricket, and Robinson almost. Add in highly rated Aldridge and Minto, plus overseas Olivier and spinners…
ReplyDeleteLots of lessons to be learned from Northamptonshire’s T20 Blast win….including overseas signings performing and death bowling (Sales looks some player…Procter did the business, Scrimshaw not even selected)…I think we need to upskill our seamers, stick with Morley and sign 2 overseas finishers with at least 1 that can bowl (actually the Hampshire model)…Raza being a good example, others will be available…
