Essex v Derbyshire preview

Derbyshire will hope to return to winning ways at Essex today, after the poor opening performance against Glamorgan.

A thirteen-man squad has been announced, with Alex Thomson back in after injury and Archie Harrison dropping out. The batting looked light in the last match and for all his effectiveness as a bowler, Mark Watt is no number eight. Logic suggests the following eleven, with the last two as drinks carriers:

Godleman, Reece, Came, Wood, Guest, Dal, Thomson, McKiernan, Watt, Conners, Aitchison, Potts, Wagstaff.

Four seamers and four spinners in that side, so enough bowling, as long as we bat fifty overs this time..

As for Essex they have the following thirteen:

Westley, Beard, Benkenstein, Browne, Buttleman, Das, Khushi, Nijjar, Porter, Roelofsen, Richards, Rymell, Snater.

I expect Derbyshire to bounce back here and get out first in the wins column for this competition.

Shan Masood will be back for the next match.

In other news, the planets have aligned and I will be at Derby for the two home games against Hampshire and Kent. It will neatly bookend a few days of doing things for my parents and I look forward to catching up with friends old and new!

Do please let me know if you plan to be at one of them and it will be good to catch up.

  1. I see that Sam Conners has been called into the England Lions squad. Recognition at last for a Derbyshire player. Not at all sure when this last happened.

    1. George Scrimshaw was, a week or two back

    2. Think hes a good player and certainly one to watch, more than Scrimshaw imo, but wouldnt read too much into as the ECB have inexplicably scheduled an Lions game that cannibalises on the snack competition so will be some new faces, and invariably will raid more counties to make up for the lost players...lunatics running the asylum...

  2. Another toss lost on a green looking track. Not had much luck with the coin over the last few weeks. Not feeling confident after watching 2 close calls in the first over. Hope it is not a repeat of the Glamorgan game. Congratulations to Sam Conners on his call up to the Lions squad. Well deserved Sam. Captain Chessy.

  3. The regular Derbyshire commentator IMO is poor he gives the impression he's more interested in keeping his Twitter followers happy

    1. I don't listen. For me, commentary is fine if I can't see it, but I rarely watch football or cricket with commentary.

    2. A good example of one man’s meat being another’s poison - I’m a big fan of Fletch’s laconic cynicism! Compared to some of the dullards on TMS these days, he is a pleasure to listen to. Either way, delighted with the win today, particularly with our three best batsmen away.

  4. I am pleased that my earlier fears were proven wrong. Great batting display from Guest, McKiernan and Reece. Hopefully the bowlers can do the business. Fingers crossed. Captain Chessy

    1. Batted very well, especially late innings. Brooke and Mattie were excellent!

  5. If you don't win this MA should give you stern word! Only 1 of our first choice limited over players (Westley and most want to see the back of him at Essex) and 2 first choice 4 days players not suited to the limited overs game in Porter and Snater. The rest kids and Aaron Beard, who just signed a 2 year contract yet was unelectable last season as he lost it yet carries on in the same vein when selected this season! Interesting to see the youngsters fair against quite a strong Derbyshire (i thought Reece had a contract for the snack competition?).

    1. Reece had one last year, but winter surgery on knee and shoulder cost him this year. Hasn't batted or bowled well, to be honest and we have missed his all round form of yore

    2. Sounds like precautionary excuses to me Essex Fan. Don’t you think all teams are short of players? We have lost both of our overseas players, Madsen, Du Plooy and Scrimshaw. Add an injured Alex Hughes and that’s over half our team missing. I guess when you pooh poohed Peakfan’s suggestion that Guest and Dal were deserving a Lion’s place because they ply their trade in second division cricket you were expecting to easily win but it looks like we might be giving you a game here.

    3. Sorry Craig I'm not sure if your being serious, I have the utmost like and respect for Derbyshire but this is nearly complete 2nd xi bar Westley! Not a case of excuses and I appreciate you are missing some players (we don't even have a 2nd o/s to miss!) yet you do have a much stronger team out..our squad is poor. If you don't believe me please check out the records and appearances of the team vs t20 qf and group games. Rymell first game of season 2 debutants, 4 players who played a handful of t20s, 2 4 day specialists then Westley and beard.

I think Dal and Guest certainly do need to do more over more time than just this season to get a Lions chance in this year of the bat. Likewise Rew from Somerset shouldn't be there but that's due to the 16.4

      You are tilting at windmills!

I don't wish to argue but certainly not a case of excuses in, our 2nd xi/squad is dire and a few I juries to our 1sxi and we have big trouble!

    4. Well done on the win hope you go far! Craig to clarify Imake it 7 players away at the 16.4, 1 away with South Africa and Sir Cook injured. So 9 forst teamers out. No excuse just highlights our resources are thin in reserve as per most non TMG counties!
