Derbyshire v Glamorgan RLODC

Derbyshire 110 all out (McKiernan 43, Van der Gugten 4-41)

Glamorgan 112-2 (Carlsen 54*)

Glamorgan won by eight wickets

Notwithstanding the absence of several players and without wishing to take anything away from Glamorgan, that was a desperately poor performance by Derbyshire today.

The fragility of the 'alternative' top order was laid bare and it was only a battling late innings by Mattie McKiernan that made the result semi-respectable.

I didn't get carried away by the Shropshire run-fest, as it counted little in the grander scheme of things. Winning the toss might have helped, but to be bowled out in thirty overs was, for me, unacceptably poor.

They can and must do better than that.

  1. Totally agree, PF. This was a dire batting performance and thank goodness for Mattie's innings. I have to say however that Glamogan's team seems relatively uscathed by the demands ofThe Hundred, unlike us. This does seem to make the RLODC something of an unfair contest.

  2. The way the top order crumbled was alarming. Billy's poor form continues and Reece, again, failed to score. This was Wood's first game, so his contribution can be forgiven. Came got out to a poor shot. All credit to McKiernan, though, for his 43.

Let's hope that this performance is just a glitch, but, as you say, Steve, the top four look fragile. We have a player totally out of form, one whose form is inconsistent, one who is still finding his feet at this level, and one who hasn't played all season. Mickey may well be thumbing frantically through his contacts book.

  3. I was concerned when I saw the final 11 with Mark Watt at number 8 it does leave a long tail. It did not affect todays result but does make us vulnerable going forward if this is the plan especially as there are plenty of bowlers in the top 6 (Reece, Dal, Wood & even Came in a recent CC game)

  4. I agree about the long tail. Our problem is we have such a small group of batsmen to call upon.

    1. Thst was my first thought. Maybe Hughes should play. Can bat and will certainly take nothing off the bowling is a good1 day player

  5. Shambolic performance, I wonder if Mickey is already regretting his ' I think we'll have a good Royal London Cup' comment?. Our batting just looks so weak, Godleman needs a big score next game, or if not I really fear for him

  6. What disappointed me most today was the lack of application shown when batting. I don’t deny that Glamorgan benefitted from the conditions early on, but mostly it seemed that the Derbyshire players found ways to give their wickets away. After the two early losses it would have been sensible to try and consolidate. Fifty overs is a long time and if they could have found a way to see off the initial spells of McIlroy and van der Gugten then there would still have been enough time to build towards a good score. What we got instead were more expansive shots. With so many of the batters lacking form, confidence or both, it seems that these early losses of wickets will continue to be a feature throughout the competition.

    1. I agree Sarah, I thought we showed a surprising lack of game sense with the bat. Rare, this season

  7. Whilst not wishing to make excuses for what was a poor performance but to say that Glamorgan had the better of the batting conditions is a huge understatement. The wicket was green, it was a very, damp humid day which meant the decision to bowl first after winning the toss was a simple one.

It was obvious too that from the start that the ball was stopping in the wicket with alarming regularity and that alone took three wickets, Dal got out to a superb catch when going well and McKiernan at least got us past 100. Its my view that this game boiled down to one thing - win the toss, win the game.

I do have a gripe however - when Glamorgan were around 60-2 and the wicket had flattened out in the hot afternoon sunshine and our seamers were making no headway at all against the excellent Ingram and Carlson, Billy just seemed to let it all slide. I'm not suggesting for one minute a score of 110 was defendable but what was the harm in giving Mark Watt a couple of overs, just to try and make something happen. Take a couple of wickets and at least we would have made them fight for the runs. As it was he persisted with Reece and Potts, Reece sadly since his injury looking a pale shadow of the bowler he was and Potts showing his inexperience with persisting in bowling the short pitched stuff at Ingram who duly dispatched a number of deliveries to the boundary.

Certainly a poor performance, but not as poor as some would make out. As I said early - win the toss, win the game.

    1. Neither Watt or Dal bowled strange considering Dal has been Derbyshire's best alrounder this season

    1. Thanks Vince. I think it was poor, to be honest. Yes, it was a no brainer to bowl first, but to be bowled out with the best part of 20 overs remaining was awful. When we know how quickly teams can now score in. T20, even circumspect play in the first 20to size it up would have helped. But we move on..
