Given there has been an interview process for which he had to apply, I am not sure the word is correct. Nor am I sure that this will come to fruition, now it is in the public domain.
Yet no one can be disappointed by the news, nor will they be with the option, if this results in a new contract for Arthur in Sri Lanka.
With Middlesex also seeking a replacement for Stuart Law, I will reserve my excitement for down the line, as and when this gets across it.
Sources tell me this should be by the weekend, or we will know it is time for plan B by that stage.
Just be assured that there is a very good alternative in the wings and that, either way, our club will be in good hands next summer.
Would you be happy with him if he gets the job.
ReplyDeleteHe did a fine job of coaching domestically here in Australia.
I live in West aust. and he coached them very successfully for a couple of years in the early 2010's before taking the Aussie job.
Just don't let him make the players do HOMEWORK, that didn't end well. LOL
Would be a fine appointment if true, think we'll struggle to get this over the line though
ReplyDeleteI would be surprised too. But the second option for me is a much better 'fit' anyway
DeleteBit worried this has hit the headlines to encourage other offers to come forward.Almost any job would be more attractive than Derbyshire right now, sadly.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, mate
DeleteI don't know Nathan - not sure the Yorkshire role feels a very attractive one just at the moment.
DeleteExcept perhaps Yorkshire?
DeleteYou get to preside over a fresh start I guess with both clubs.
DeleteIs it just me, but I'm far from convinced that Mickey Arthur is a particularly good fit?
ReplyDeleteLooking through his CV it looks like nearly all his coaching career (apart from 3 years at a school), has been at international level. At that level the job of coach is mainly around man management and strategy, and not about actual skills coaching. At Derbyshire, improving skills will be very important, turning 2nd 11 players into 1st 11 and 1st team fillers into 1st team stars. Does he have the abilities an commitment to do that?
Also looking at his CV it looks like he largely failed at the man management/strategy elements in Australia, and if he succeeded with South Africa that may have been as much about Graeme Smith as about Mickey Arthur.
I hope I'm wrong but I'm concerned that Mickey Arthur may turn out to be as much yesterdays man as Dave Haughton. I dont know why, but when you implied that the prospective appointee was involved in the T20 world cup, I hoped in was Paul Collingwood looking to become the main man in a coaching set up.
That's my concern too, David. I think the decision was made based on name, rather than suitability.
DeleteOf course he is a good coach, but at elite level. Can he get down with others? I am not sure.
I don't think it will get across the line, but quite honestly feel option B is a far better 'fit' for us anyway.
Were Arthur to come, I suspect he would be away to the next international job inside 12 months.
Martyn Moxon will probably be looking for a job very soon would Derbyshire give him a chance?
ReplyDeleteHosein and Critchley need replacing, the only batsmen to average above 40 in first class cricket last season.. That is a big task and the clock is ticking. Kris
