To answer here the same question that I have been asked several times in recent days, I do think that Rory Haydon, Amrit Basra and Joe Hawkins will get deals for 2026. Indeed, the likelihood is that these will be announced in one press release in the not too distant future.
All offer something that the club needs and they are the right age, with a collective desire to succeed. On what we have seen so far, there is no real gamble in the offers.
If Derbyshire overlook the very obvious claims that these fellas have staked, I would be pretty concerned, to be honest.
But for the most frequent question in my postbag in the last seven to ten days - where is Mickey Arthur?
Back in January, on the club website, it was announced that he had been appointed Director of Cricket by the Northern Superchargers.
In the article, on the tenth of that month, it said:
It went on:
Arthur said: “Derbyshire remains my primary focus and I’m committed to achieving our goals of bringing success to the Club.
Fast forward seven months and, with no announcement by the club that I have seen, it appears that Derbyshire has become the 'hands off' role. There has been no sign of him at the Metro Bank matches, according to my sources, and I find that extraordinary.
You can dress it up any way that you like. There can be protestations that the other coaches are being given opportunity to lead, but the fact remains that someone who is being paid a lot of money to oversee the cricketing fortunes of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, appears to be doing so at a distance and in a part-time capacity. Presumably for full-time wages. Could you imagine a football manager being told that they didn't need to turn up on match day?
Maybe the club is getting something for this 'other job'. Possibly that role offers contact with players who *might* come to the club. Some will maintain that it is good for the club's name to be taken into a different environment. Maybe he is at our matches, but if so is either keeping an unusually low profile or is cunningly disguised.
If he isn't, I think it is disrespectful.
To the players and supporters of Derbyshire, to the club itself. It smacks of our being an afterthought and all parties deserve better.
Imagine you are Amrit Basra or Rory Haydon, bursting to impress on what is effectively a trial at a first class county. Only the person who is ultimately responsible for your getting a long-term contract isn't there. Yes, he can watch a stream, but don't these young players need feedback at the end of a day, or a game? Don't you need to see how they prepare? Offer a few, sage words of wisdom? Of course he has his coaches, but it hardly seems sensible for someone to be controlling the destiny of others from afar.
How can you tell your players to give total commitment to their jobs when you are clearly not doing it yourself? Derbyshire might be 'the primary focus' but it is clearly NOT all of the time.
Perhaps the club is fine by this, but I doubt that members or supporters are. At the very least, a press statement should have been put out to say that he was going to be elsewhere during this competition. As it is, the assumption is that they hoped no one would notice.
The club could nip these rumours in the bud by having him front up after the game at Leicester on Wednesday, from the ground. The suggestion that he should always do a media piece after games is a valid one. This is potentially the last game of real significance this summer and Arthur should be talking about it, win or lose.
I don't think it appropriate for someone who is Head of Cricket at our club to take on another role that prevents him from doing the job he is paid for. I don't care that much if he takes on a position in the early winter, when the players are doing fitness work. But I strongly feel that he should be at the club and with the players during the season.
I'd be surprised if anyone disagreed with me. And I am happy to apologise if he has been at recent matches.
But based on the quantity of trusted people telling me otherwise, I don't think that will be necessary.
Spot on again Steve. It does seem amazing if he’s not even at the metro games. If we fail to finish in the top 3 of this competition added to a miserable t20. Possible 4th or 5th place in the county championship surely he can’t keep talking about a project. Me or you could take over and continually talk about a project without ever doing much. It seems quite easy. We need some sort of success in one of the 3 competitions or a flying start next summer otherwise I doubt if he will have any supporters left
ReplyDeleteWe should never have extended his contract.Baffling decision. Simon
ReplyDeleteIt was mentioned that the club are benefiting financially from his role with NS. But, as you say, it was described as very much a 'hands-off' role.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know that Jasper. Which is fine, IF it is hands off and not affecting his substantive post.
DeleteMaybe we hire him out to all and sundry, cover his salary and get someone else in to do the job..😉
He's got no goodwill credit left so why is he still allowed to do as the likes? It reflects poorly on those making decisions at the club.
ReplyDeleteRob
I hear David Lloyd has retired
ReplyDeleteYes, mentioned once or twice last week, as a strong rumour. But of course, until announced by the club, it remains just that. Time will tell
DeleteI watched our 2nd XI today in a fantastic game against the Zimbabwe A team. Derbyshire narrowly lost with an over to spare but a great effort against an International A side! Very positive to see the youngsters competing for us. Future is Bright!
ReplyDeleteThanks John, there's no scores on NV Play. What were the scores/best individual performances?
DeleteMaybe an avenue, for the release of some of those face masks, released by the Club to promote & replicate the heroic Wayne Madsen, but in this case,a similar release of some Mickey Arthur masks,to be accompanied by the iconc Jeff Beck number from 1968 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'....."You're everywhere & nowhere baby"... Some rather apt lyrics,involved...

I think a press release is needed. As if superchargers agreed fee for his service over august period. It should be clubs duty to take the flack. If this not the case then I think Mickey made a huge mistake and poor judgement that club members won’t forget. I hope can be cleared up by good honest communication.
ReplyDeleteHe WAS at the Metro Bank opener at Cheltenham College - I saw him in the flesh (I was sat only a short distance from the Derbyshire 'bench'). I couldn't say about Neath as I never made it to the ground and I've been absent myself since then.
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with everything you say in your OP and still wonder what was the justification for the contract extension despite your previous best efforts to make it make sense, Steve.
It would also be nice to know what a hands off role in a joke competition involves anyway. Nice work if you can get it I suppose. Maybe it’s what he could specialise in one day. Maybe the more hands off the better
ReplyDeleteLHow many times has he been allowed to make us his second choice now? If he’s not 100% committed - which seems the case - he should either do the honourable thing or be shown the door. Time to go.
ReplyDeleteChris in Shropshire.
As much as I don't agree with him going of to be in the hundred, the biggest concern to me, is if he indeed not even attending Derbyshire games in the one day cup. That makes the earlier statement of “Derbyshire being the main focus” a blatant lie and just lip service to placate supporters as he went off to yet another role…and then seemingly hoped no one would notice he was not around. That becomes wholly unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe the board are prepared to accept that his involvement as a name outweighs his non involvement here AND his lack of success. Quite staggering that we are prepared to let this go and just stumble on
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon. Please use a name in future..
DeleteI've said it a million times and MA needs to be relieved of his duties when the season ends. Derbyshire is just an afterthought to him, I've never felt he has the best interests of our county at heart, be it when he was still involved with Pakistan and now the superchargers. I want a head coach who is solely invested in Derbyshire ccc, MA is not and has to go. Results very poor under him as well, we've regressed not progressed
ReplyDeletePerfectly put Steve. A conflict of interests and, it has to be said, a lack of openness from both him and the club does nobody any good at all.
ReplyDeleteTime for some honesty on this one
Andy
There does not seem as much anger aimed at the 3 players missing in action …or lack of action ! Madsen Donald and Brown have only played 2 games from a possible 15 their teams have played. Perhaps supporters don’t want them back and are happy watching the younger players get game time. Players win matches for me and those 3 would give us a better chance. There was a rule allowing a recall if after 3 games a player had not been selected in the 💯. Not sure what’s happened to that being enforced. Also a number of other coaches are away with the 💯 giving the support staff some experience. It’s just another down side of this competition I’m afraid
DeleteJason
There's an acceptance of players being away, Jason and a chance for others to make a name. But the issue is the club saying that Derbyshire are the priority for MA and he hasn't been there for the last two games. Good communication with members and supporters is crucial and that hasn't happened here
DeleteWith respect one of the three players missing at the moment wouldn't get in our team on merit !
ReplyDeleteIan from Suffolk. You are completey out of touch and also ostensibly wrong with your assessment of The hundred as a joke competition. It is, in fact the total opposite of that, whether you personally enjoy that type of competition or not. Look at the crowds, the families paying to enjoy an evening ofentertainment. I know this thread is about the suspected absence of MA but I couldnt let your comments be prined without retort.
ReplyDeleteGoing back to my old school maths, I am not sure if a Venn Diagram would show a great deal of overlap between traditional cricket lovers and those who follow the hundred.
DeleteYou might be one of the few who follows both, Jon and that is fine. As I have written before, it is all about opinions. But for me it is an event with some cricket, rather than a format here to stay. It will change in the next few years but it has been to the detriment of long lasting formats that people loved, so there was always going to be anger from the traditionalists, including myself
I have tried to watch it three times and I haven't lasted 10 minutes
